Tawny owls Bomber and Luna have just welcomed their first chick & there's still more to come!
It's a huge moment for the pair. For the past 2 years, their eggs failed to hatch.

Luna's first chick
It’s April 6, and this tiny owlet has just hatched. Its mother, Luna, arrives and carefully tucks it under her feathers.
First feed
The chick uses so much energy breaking out of the egg, it now needs food. Only an hour after hatching it has its first ever feed!
Tawny owl parent roles
Luna and Bomber work hard to care for their chick. Female Luna broods the owlet to keep it warm, barely leaving the nest. Male Bomber’s provides food for the family from dusk until dawn. But this isn’t his only role, when he’s not hunting, he spends his days watching the nest in the nearby trees for intruders.
Will eggs 2, 3 & 4 ever hatch?
I keep a close eye out for signs of the next eggs hatching. But when the second and third eggs are overdue, it becomes clear they won’t hatch. Luna’s only hope for another chick of her own lies with the fourth egg, which thankfully arrives on 11th April.
Bomber finally meets the chicks
It’s now nearly a week since the first chick hatched, and two days since the second, but Bomber still hasn’t had a chance to meet his owlets. He’s a dedicated father but caring for the chicks is Luna’s role and she’s so protective.
One night, Bomber lures Luna out of the nest and takes his chance to see his owlets alone. Bomber hoots to greet them. Luna could be back at any moment, so he wastes no time, gently preening the chicks. He listens carefully for Luna’s return; he doesn’t want to be caught in the act!
Rocket & Nova are developing fast
We decide to name them Rocket & Nova. Oldest chick, Rocket, is now 10 days it's starting to stand and showing off pin feathers developing along its wing. By 2 weeks old, Rocket’s eyes are open and it bobs its head, taking in the nest for the first time. By 16 days old , it does it's first wing flap.
New rescued chick Solar joins the family
A 2-3 week old rescued tawny owl chick is brought to Fotherdale for Robert to put in with Luna's chicks and brought up as a wild owl alongside the others. It was found in Elvington, York UK.
Bird ID rings for all the chicks
Registered ringer Jean Thorpe, gives all the chicks ID rings so that they can be tracked througout their lives.
Luna, Bomber & the chicks accept Solar
Owls only have simple counting abilities, so Luna seems to have no idea she’s gained a chick, she’s accepted Solar immediately and Rocket and Nova are happy to have a new sibling!

Something to do with what Bomber and Luna were eating before maybe it’s “better clean food” for them at winter season ???

@@mariawestman9026yes, the eggs that have failed previous years have been empty inside. Robert took out the failed eggs when he put in the rescued owl chicks, and when he put the failed eggs in front of a flashlight you could see that the light was shining through, meaning there was just egg yolk and egg white inside but no chick.
If there’s a developing embryo inside an egg, you can see reddish shadows of blood vessels connected to the inside of the shell. Depending on the age of the embryo/fetus, you see more and more blood vessels, and you can even start to see the shadow of a little flickering dot (the beating heart). As the chick grows it takes up more and more space, so less and less light shines through if you put it in front of a flashlight.
Since Luna’s and Bomber’s previous eggs were completely empty, we thought the issue might be with the fertilisation, and might be because of Bombers age (he’s more than ten years old), so we were all very surprised and happy for Luna and Bomber last year when they managed to hatch two of their own eggs 😊

The first video I ever watched from this channel was the one with Luna taking care of 6 adopted owlets. Now it's a core part of my monthly video consumption. I've got to know, love and grieve so many lovely birds. All the tears shed, both happy and sad, all thanks to Luna.

Just watching this video, and seeing bomber go and groom his kids just brought tears to my eyes. You can see how he really wanted to see his kids.

Bomber has always been such a sweet dad, even with the foster chicks. He pulled a similar stunt to meet them last year. ❤❤❤

Robert stated it might due to Bomber being an older male,but they hatched two last year.
Luna loves being a mum, she'd our fluffy mama owl. She's super protective, bomber has to wait to get a look in with the children. Bless the Hootin' papa he does such a good job finding food.

It's quite heartwarming to see Luna be quite a champion foster mother. We've seen her brood and raise quite a number of chicks over time, some hers and some not. Even in spite of the tragedies and difficulties endured along the way, Luna and her chicks have shown to be quite successful.
And of course, major props to Bomber for his dedicated support.
😍🫂 The world seems such a dark & scary place at times with what humans do to each other, and then I open up to find this adorable & loving owl family and my heart melts, my eyes smile (along with a tear or two 🥲) for the sheer joy & sweetness of Luna & Bomber 🦉caring for their chicks & once again taking on a foster chick to raise. And the humans, Robert & Jean, reminding us there are wonderful caring humans too🫂, and we should elevate them to front of mind & not get dragged down by the awful humans 😡

I discovered the channel a year ago as Luna was laying her first egg. I well remember the thrill of watching Rocket hatch. This film let me relive those happy moments as I wait and hope that Luna and Bomber have a similar outcome this year. Thank you, Robert!

3:52 after investigating the size of the rat, Luna quickly turned her head to Bomber to bring more food. seems its not large enough
i just love the sounds tawny owls make, they sound like happy guinea pigs when u pet them. its funny luna closes her eyes while feeding, i wonder if owlets have accidentally nicked her eyes before
