  • After several months of living in Japan, our daughter is finally at Japanese kindergarten, or Yochien 幼稚園 as its known locally. Leaving Germany, we knew it would be a hard reality leaving the amazing support of her daycare/Kindergarten and we only hoped we could find something remotely close to that in Japan. Thankfully, we've found a great school where she is beginning to make friends, has great homemade lunches from school ( they even have a registered dietitian on the staff!), and learning Japanese every day. She's a superstar and we love seeing her take it on with a lot of excitement and confidence!
We share some first thoughts about all the school supplies and uniforms that she's required to wear, including needing a helmet in the event of an earthquake at school.
As always, thanks for watching! Please subscribe to keep following along :).

We were so lucky to have fresh meals in our daughter's German
Kindergarten every day ,too. All kids loved the food there. The chef was a lady originated from Poland and the Polish cuisine is delicious, even though she cooked also international meals that kids like. ( Pancakes. Pizza, fish fingers etc.)

Good luck to Willa starting Kindergarten 🍀
I’m amazed that she’s already singing in Japanese, though of course I’m aware that very young children soak up a new language with lightning speed.
    She’ll do just fine!
I’m looking forward to hear of her progress in a few months.
Someone commented here that hopefully she’ll keep some German … I think if maybe you still have - or get - some children’s books and children’s videos in German and she gets to look at it frequently, she’ll keep enough German to at least understand it.

    • @OurStorytoTell
      @OurStorytoTell  Před 13 dny +3

Yes she catching on so quickly! She also is retaining her German quite well which makes us sooo happy! She watches shows in German, listens to German music(& on has German tonies) and talks with us in German a bit too! We really want her to maintain it!

      That’s great!
      Our granddaughter just turned 4.
She’s growing up with 3 languages.
She lives in the Swiss speaking part of Switzerland, goes to preschool there and genuine „Swiss German“ local language is spoken there, it’s mandatory.
At home her mother, a German, speaks regular German with her, her father, also a German but he grew up in a bilingual household (ours) tries to speak English with her as much as possible. Sometimes he forgets. 😉
Anyways, she has Tonies in German and in English - I think the Tonies are great!
And she watches some kids videos in English language (the Canadian show Paw Patrol of course, and the British/Welsh show Fireman Sam), the WWW makes it possible, she’s not allowed to watch TV, I think she’s allowed maximum 20 minutes or half an hour of Paw Patrol & Co per day, she has children’s books in English, some of which we brought over from the states, Dr Seuss and various others. Her mom spent some time in the States as Au Pair, plus works at the front desk of a hotel in Zurich with international clientele, and is therefore quite fluent in English, so mom & dad can read English books to her.
So this little girl understands English, German, Swiss German - sings English songs but replies nearly always in German or Swiss German.
When she was a bit younger, all her responses were in Swiss German, at best I understood 2 thirds of it - and when I asked either parent what she had just said, the response was often: no idea, we don’t understand everything she says either 😧
(She entered KITA and therefore the world of Switzerduetsch as a 9 months old.)
But lately I noticed that she made an effort to speak more German German with me/us, of course some Swiss German expressions mixed in, but altogether we can now understand everything she says.
Her parents are starting to adapt, they are using more and more Swiss words/expressions instead of German ones, mostly those are French based words so with my long lost school French I understand and can explain to my American husband what they’re talking about.
I think it’s great for their minds if children have the chance to grow up bilingual or even better multilingual. And it also gives them better chances later.

Congratulations on Willa's enrollment in the Japanese kindergarten! No doubt just having to keep tidy (and keep up with ) all those parts of the uniforms, gym clothes and other personal school equipment will teach Willa how to independently organized and disciplined (and it will be interesting to see how much of the spoken if not written Japanese language she learns in the process). Of course what's interesting is that before the Meiji Restoration in 1868, girls were rarely educated in Japan- with the notable exception of merchants' daughters so that they'd be able to help their future husbands with the family business's bookkeeping! However, since then, they have been keen to educate ALL their children from an early age! Regardless, I hope she soon makes friends there and that you two may become friends with her friends' parents before too long. Thanks for this!

Tales of Genji, Pillow Story...they're all written by Japanese women (for the sake of Japanese women) nearly 1,000 years ago. TERAKOYA system was already in place during the Edo period. Sure not everybody was trained Chinese classics, but most people were literate even before Meiji period.

OMG, I'm not sure I'd be able to keep track of all the stuff for school at first! But I'm sure it will soon settle down when it becomes routine for you.
And the school uniform is really very cute, even if I'm always a bit alienated when it comes to school uniforms, the idea is so foreign to us Germans! But it certainly has its advantages. Especially when I think of how often my best friend's grandson was bullied because of his outfits.
I like the idea that Willa starts with relatively few lessons and obviously gets the time to get used to it. And it was great to see how much she enjoyed singing along at the event!
