      Came from a clash of heads in the third. Quarry force him against the ropes with a left hook to the body and ali ducked his head and Jerry ran into it. It was a terrible break, but that's boxing. Ali erased all doubt in the return when he nearly beat Jerry to death.

      A punch doesn't have to be hard to cause an eye injury. Actually, Ali was never renownwed as a hard puncher. But his hand speed, accuracy and the cumulative effects of his punches are what made him so formidable.

    Nothing happened in those 3 rounds that should make anyone believe that Quarry might have taken Ali out in the next round. Quarry took some clean shots in the 3rd that staggered him. He had little luck catching Ali with anything meaningful during those 9 minutes. So how does he sit there with a straight face telling the media that be could have scored a stoppage if the fight had continued? Does he think that no one saw the fight and wouldn't know how ludicrous his claim was?

      It's boxing...you only need 1 punch. Quarry was a hard enough hitter to get it done. His defense stunk, that's why he lost. Marciano is the closest thing to good defense that could go the distance with Ali. Duck and move and get in close. Actually Frazier did that in his win against Ali. Duck, crowd and move. Quarry didn't do that and took a lot of shots. But all Quarry would've needed was one clean shot or a short combo and he could have finished it.

    • @richardweiler3966
      @richardweiler3966 Před 3 lety +3

      @@chadlpnemt that's true about any fight or fighter. It only takes 1 punch. But it's extremely rare that just 1 punch would take care of business against a fighter of Ali's caliber. Quarry had 2 chances against Ali. Here and again in 1972. He never came close in either fight to landing that 1 punch. There were no miracles to be had.

    • @chadlpnemt
      @chadlpnemt Před 3 lety +1

      @@richardweiler3966 Tell that to Henry Cooper, one punch dazed Ali and if the bell hadn't rang Cooper may have gotten the best of that fight. One had to fight Ali with a strategy, like Ali had a strategy. Quarry didn't really do that. Ali beat Quarry, no issue there, but Quarry was no slouch.

    • @richardweiler3966
      @richardweiler3966 Před 3 lety +2

      @@chadlpnemt all I know is that Ali got up and won that Cooper fight. The bell had nothing to do with it because the count continues after the bell unless it's the final round. Ali was up at the count of 3. Other fighters (Sonny Banks and Joe Frazier) dropped Ali too, but like Cooper, were unable to finish him. One punch wasn't enough. When Ali fought Quarry in 1970, he was far stronger and sturdier than the young Cassius Clay who fought Cooper more than 7 years earlier. Frazier was the only man to knock down the mature Muhammad Ali (the bogus Wepner knockdown was just a blown call by inept referee Tony Perez) and Ali was amazingly up immediately after sampling a left hook from Hell. If Frazier's flush legendary hook couldn't keep Ali down, it's very very doubtful that Quarry had anything in his arsenal that would have finished Ali.

    Quarry had a chin of stone and absolutely no fear. In that sense, Ali’s punches didn’t “hurt” him. But if the fight continued, a bloody and blind Quarry would have been pummeled. And if the ref wouldn’t stop it, Jerry would fight until he died. Still, he should have been more gracious in the interview.

    even at that time frame Jerry was a small heavy weight but one thing Jerry always did he came to fight never lied about nothing and it's stacked a lot of broads in the swimming pools and such to he was a lot more of a womanizer the most people know and the boy like to drink a few such as well but what Jerry did he exposed his heart every single fight of his life even when he went into Alzheimer's dementia and worse the Irish little Jerry a fighter not a runner with a big mouth

    To all these geniuses who make the “Ha Ha” bullshit remarks about Jerry Quarry saying that Ali can’t punch but his eye shows he can, you are missing the point by a mile. In his prime, Quarry could get hit by a baseball bat and would say the same thing. Quarry had one of the best chins (and fighting styles) during the Golden Age of the Heavyweights. Ali and Joe Frazier both had punching techniques that would slice through skin quite readily, whereas George Foreman, Ernie Shavers, and Ron Lyle had punches that were tremendously thudding and extremely heavy, but not cutting.
