He also uses a finger snapping motion when he attacks the string..that's right from Fieldys mouth himself....he holds the bass the way he does because he's a trained classical upright player
After studying this sound, it’s all in the low mids and treble😉 as he said himself scoop all the mids out, boost bass a little bit, crank TREBEL all the way up, low mids all the way up. Having those ADX5 pickups he uses is a big plus aswell but they’re very hard to find without owning one of the signature K5’s
I’ve gotten some nasty critiques, this one is actually really valid and totally fair. I should have mentioned in the video it’s about getting his register. Well done, great comment!
Hey, man nice work! That is basically going to get you the sound. I did something similar for a while with an oc2, and it helped when I actually *smacked* the strings as opposed to slapping them. Give it a go and see what you come up with.
I don't have exact measurements, yet my rule of thumb is this. If it's uncomfortable sliding a business card between the string and the board? You're a touch too low to my taste, raise it a tiny bit and you're home! Heck, you might like it dropped down that far. It's a taste thing lol but the business card is a decent litmus test.
Get 5 string bass strings and replace your E with the B, so on and so forth. That avoids the octave pedal problem. Or you could always get thicker strings for a 4 string. E-A is a pretty substantial jump tho
That’s my point. If you can get an instrument that you want to properly set up and get the right strings, then that’s great and you should go with that option first. But the way you are looking at it is the way I’m looking at it.
It was always strange that Trujillo's kid had a Three String Bass, but I never really thought about it until this, I did not know he was jumping if for a Five String Player, I was going to say, How did Trujillo's kid stand in for the S America tour with a three string Bass if he was replicating Five string parts.. Now I know. Still there must have been some parts that were unnecessarily acrobatic.
I agree, particularly if you have an extra bass. But if you only have one bass, an octave pedal would do (sort of). But yes ultimately, I agree with you
@@JonLaTonaBass So it's not recommended on stage haha. But still nice video man. I just recently upload the same song bass cover with drop A standard 4 strings Squier Classic Vibe.
I know there is a little rattle with Fieldy , but going from a low E to a low A seems to rattly. Plus going back and forth is not great for the bass in the long run
Ahh I see, so with the pitch shifter, you’re playing the bass as a detuned 5 string with an extra low e! That also means you can play the low g and play some stonky djont roffs
Yes exactly. I def get criticized in this video for the fact that better options are available. Which I agree with (Ibanez does have a bass for $250 that is five strings) and you can set it up like Fieldy. If you can do that, great. But you can just get an octave pedal if you only have one bass and if you need to stay in standard. Happy playing!!
I think it's got its own charm. Kinda like that "bass" riff on seven nation army. It crushes the tone a bit so you get a weird rubber band sound, if you know what I mean. Back in high school I didn't have money for a bass, so I just did what he did. Nowadays you can just do everything with vsts and send monitor signals anywhere you want in the daw, but pedals are so much fun to mess around with. One has to embrace the jank to enjoy the jank for what it is!
Not my favorite band either, but I try to give equitable options for people who do value their music, but don’t have the resources and tools they need.
I thought Fieldy used B5s and B9s? Can any be substituted? - this is coming from a 38yr old who just picked up a bass guitar for the first time on August 7th.
So first off, welcome to the world of bass playing!! You could very well be right, but if you’re able to get a 5 string Ibanez you are in great shape and wouldn’t need this video. This video is about getting his register of the bass if you only own a jazz bass or a precision bass. Happy playing!!
You can do that, if you have another bass in standard. This hack is meant specifically for having one bass that needs to be kept in standard. Otherwise constantly retuning is bad for the neck.
The pedal I use is the one also featured in the video link below this message. In Jeremy I use the octave divide option. But for Fieldy, I use the whammy side (down an octave) How to play Pearl Jam’s Jeremy with a 4 string bass #shorts czcams.com/users/shortsdb4QqhNRU4Y?feature=share
When I say sound, I don’t mean tone, I meant pitch. Nevertheless even though he’s not someone I love, others do and that’s who I am making the video for.
Fieldy has to be the worst bass player who ever got famous. All his stuff sounds like rattling, thunking and imitating a baby jumping in his box spring based crib. “RATTLE RATTLE KaTHUNK KaTHUNK RERAW RERAW” You could accomplish the same tone by plucking the loose springs on a giant trampoline.
So in short, I was wrong in regards of sounding like him. This is just a pinch to get down to the same register as Fieldy. But if you have an octave pedal that allows you to go 2 octaves below original note, then you can play Fieldy bass parts by using the A, D and G strings. Happy playing!
Works in theory but part of Fieldy’s tone is the flap of the strings.
That’s a fair point. This is just a temporary solution if you need that register without changing steings.
To get the sound you need light gauge stainless steel strings and a covered humbucker or active pickup and heavy slap and fingering
why get an octave pedal when you can just get lower gauge strings 😭
Bc some people still want to be in standard tuning instead of switching strings. Octave pedal is an easier and more versatile option
Also you have to change intonation if you change string gauge.
@@swh05284 excellent point!!

I just tune down to A standard on a 4 string, low action helps

Pro tip: make bass go clickity clack
Do you know what the action should be set at on a 5-string bass
It it’s specifically for Fieldy, I’m not 100% sure. But since he does detune, more than likely the string should be relatively loose

Just tune the bass so that it's ADGC that way you get the percussion sound too
lol, the point is if you only have one bass. You can’t go back and forth tuning your bass up and down a whopping seven frets just to play some Fieldy.
Get 5 string bass strings and replace your E with the B, so on and so forth.
