    The video was great. I’ve learned a lot from it a lot more than other videos. I listened to or watched. Thank you.

    Started SPJ and bought a nice setup a few weeks ago. You're right on about it. It's been my go-to and really haven't touched the bucktails since. Does take some practice but such a blast. You can spend 300$ to 1000 for a nice Saltiga and ODM. Either way a great new way to fish. Cheers

    Thank you for this video. Every other video I have watched on youtube (and i have watched a WHOLE LOT) says that the topshot leader connected to the braid main line should be tied onto the solid ring. The assist hooks are also attached to the solid ring. The split ring is connected to the Solid Ring. The split ring, with all other components connected to it is attached to the jig itself. However, you're saying that the top shot is to be connected to the jig itself. Which is right???

      It's highly debatable. And, even info from other countries is different among those anglers as well. I have tied to every part of the setup to see what personally presents the jig better. In more recent videos I mention tying to the split ring with a micro 80 swivel. ALL of the methods catch fish.. What we know for sure is tying to the welded ring or the split ring raises the hook height while jigging under tension.. Which, may or may not matter at all. Or, it might.. Right now, I have most of my SP jigs tied to the Split Ring yet again.. My Fast Jigs are tied to the jig itself. In ALL cases,, using a spro micro 80 barrel swivel to attach.
      In saying ALL that, we Like to try EVERYTHING and to be honest, we can't tell much difference in the depths we fish most (50-120 ft). In deeper water, there may be a difference.. Mess around with it and see what you like best.. I think you'll find that it all works, but you'll end up favoring one way over the other... Let us know what you end up liking most! Fish on!

    Love the amount of perspective you have with different jigs over the years. I only get a few weekends a year of offshore and the goal is to put as many fish in the box as possible. Do you out fish bait with jigs often? I see jigs as way to mainly get a few extra bites through out the day vs a bait replacement, and just a way to have fun doing something different. How do you work in jigs when the goal is catching as many keeper fish as possible vs just jigging for the joy of the technique . Thanks!

      Add a Bonito skin strip, or cero, Kingfish or Spanish mackerel strip.. 2-3 inches long to a bucktail, and maybe 1/2 inch wide. You can bet that'll spice things up, quickly!! Especially if they're not biting between tides and times of slow current or no current.. Fish on! Capt RL

      I always get to the bottom first and will hook up first. If the capt says the fish are 50ft up bottom and i can work it up or down going there and stay longer than bait guys do. Im always connected with my jig and i know if my jig aka bait is there all the time not second guessing if my dead or live bait is still there esp in deep water. As long you present it right you will catch on par or more than bait guys do. We like fishing with bait guys as we think the bait serves as a chum for jig guys. But its not a technique that conquers all. Its fishing you will get skunked or catch alot. And we fish what works we drop dead, live and jig all same time and use what works to get the most meat. =)

    Yes I do have question after spending 30:54 watching your video. Bucktail is the lure/jig that switch me from using bait(stink) to lure. I learned to use bucktail from this guy name John Skinner. Been doing well with striped bass. However, when I went to south East Asia for vocation, I did some fishing, I notice all the people on the party boat only use those metal jigs with assist hooks just like your. Nobody knew anything about fishing a bucktail. My question is when do you use those metal jig and when do you use bucktail? Does bucktail work on deeper water compare to those slow pitch jig? And how come most people aren't using those slow pitch jig when fishing from inshore? Why did you say jig in 20/30g work better compare to heavy jig? Enlighten me please.

      Thanks for watching! About your question, pertaining to what occasion would inspire me to fish metal or bucktails..
      I will fish both. Almost always, even in deeper water. Usually, the slow jigs will outfish the bucktail for Grouper. I have found that snappers "seem to prefer" a bucktail. That said, I'll swap between the two types of jigs, and the 3rd, a simple vertical speed (fast jig). The fast jig is my LAST choice. It's an amberjack killer but fast jigs simply cannot be presented as well as a slow jig. Slow jigging is very productive with the proper technique and proper rod, line and reel. It's catching on around the world. There's a reason for that, it's highly productive for Bottom fish, especially.. But never discount a bucktail jig of the proper weight for the depth/current you're fishing in.

    Excellent explanation of the nuances of jigging. What brand is the long jig with the bottom ridge and single assist hook you feature in the first half of the video. Thanks

      Mark, I believe that's a few of some of the original japanese spj we bought from our daiwa tanacom electric reel supplier many years ago from Japan. These don't even have weights/grams printed on them. Very old jigs in terms of the slow jigging sport here in the USA.. I'll see if I can find out for you, from him...thank you for your comments!

      Mark, thank you for the comments. That may be a very old Poseidon (or other mainstream brands from back in 2016-2017) slim J types made in Japan, back then. As Capt RL mentioned, we started receiving SPJ's with Daiwa 300 Tanacom electric Reel orders from Japan. The 300's were not available here in the USA at that time. Our connect in JAP informed us of the SPJ's around that time.. I will see what i can find out as well.

    Would a 2 speed reel such as a Daiwa Saltist Lever Drag not be very advantageous in this type fishing?

    What is the weight of the micro jig? Are all the jigs of similar weight qualified as a micro jig?

      @bottomfishing24-7  Před rokem +2

      Micro Jigs are debatable as to weight. my definition of a Micro Jig is under 20 grams. Fish on!

      That's right.. We're making a short about dividing the jig gram weight number by 30 to get a very close ounce weight. 🤙
