Pastor T.L. Barrett comes to this Tiny Desk (home) concert from his spiritual home, the Chicago church he has pastored for over 40 years. His choir, the Royal Voices of Life, and the band are positioned in front of a dazzlingly lit stained glass window. A tambourine is at the ready. The sight is familiar to anyone familiar with churches that anchor their neighborhood.
Starting in 1971, Pastor Barrett released a series of albums that integrated soul and funk elements, all backed by a 45-member ensemble. Some of those former youths still perform with him today. At one point, his congregation included Donny Hathaway and members of Earth, Wind & Fire. Barrett's music has had a resurgence of late - his records have been sampled by Kanye West and DJ Khaled, songs have been featured in movies and commercials, and the label Numero Group will soon release a career-spanning box set.
Pastor Barrett opens this Tiny Desk (home) concert with "I Shall Wear a Crown," reminding the choir, "Let the people know you like it!" His most well-known song, "Like a Ship," retains the groove of the 1971 original; the song encourages that, despite the pain, you can shake it. In the rolling, soul-drenched take on "Nobody Knows," Barrett cautions: "This is a mean world to try to live in / But you've got to stay ahead until you die." A church member sitting in the front pew, decked out in a wide brim hat, raises her hands in praise. This is not a concert; this is worship.

I saw "nobody knows" recorded in person with the children's choir, when I was a little girl. I hadn't thought about that song until I saw the Nike commercial, I think. Such good memories; makes me miss my mom.

@@solace6613 honestly, I don't think he was very popular since the 70s and mainly just the Gospel music sector. I feel like because some of his music had such a funky sound, it was sampled for many more recent projects; making his music popular enough for the world to know the man behind the music.

NPR is so dope for this
I discovered Pastor TLB maybe 10 years ago and connected with all of his music instantly. It's soulful, rich, deep and forces you to view your relationship with God in a different way. I'm glad to see his longevity... I heard his music in the background of an NBA commercial a few years ago and almost fell outta my chair. Everybody in the room thought I was crazy and didn't understand the impact of seeing it used in that way lol.. This music is timeless and beautiful. Thanks Pastor TLB

For the life of me can't remember what TV show I was watching (probably Queen Sugar) which had 'Like a Ship' playing in the background...I was hooked. Who wouldn't? If the opening bars of that song doesn't move anything in you...please book a doctor's appointment. Just like when I heard 'Too late to turn back' by Cornelius Brothers &Sister Rose on 'BlackkKlansman, thanks to Shazzam, I was able discover these Gems. Although I grew up in the era and decades of this music in far away Nigeria...I never heard TL Barrett until now. Just read up and discovered a rich history of a blessed man who should have been up there with the likes of the Hawkins, Aretha Franklin, Cleveland etc...But I loved how he stayed and played his lane. He wasn't seeking fame. Fame rather found him, albeit, 50 years later. Moral of the tale? Only what you do for Christ will last!
I heard "Like A Ship" on Hacks on HBO Max and have played it ever since. Pastor TL Barrett is a revelation! The opening bars and the anguish and soul in his voice brought me back again and again. I wish they would re-release it on CD.

When I was a child 20-25 years ago,a gospel group from Ohio came to my city in Spain and was one of the most amazing shows I never have seen in my live.

I’m floored over his early 70s albums.
The song titled “medley” is the funkiest gospel song ever recorded. Complete with a Jamerson bass line and hip hop style drums. I got it on repeat and I’m stuck. I consider it a personal treat from The Lord.
