    Fitted the kit today following your video step by step. Awesome! Thank you so much. Only difference for my vehicle (causing a 5 minute panic) was that I then needed to hold the ‘menu’ button for 3 seconds to connect to CarPlay and not the ‘back’ button. Cheers!

    Hi, your video is brillant. I think it makes sense replacing as well the display for a 10".
    Anyway, I am afraid the most useful information regarding BMW display/carplay retrofit is not in your video : Had you a CIC or a NBT system, and how to find this out ?
    From the infos I found, a 2014 F20 should be NBT but the HMI looks more like the one of a CIC (which should have ended in 2013 for F20).
    Could you tell us what you installed on your car : Carplay retrofit for NBT or for CIC ?

      Yes, this is why I asked the question.
      But in between I realised that in fact all matter is the connector type, not the SW.
      And surprisingly, for the BMW cars (esp. F20) from 2013-2014, you can have a CIC SW and a NBT-compatible connector, 6 pins.
      Whereas basic CIC-type connector is 4 pins.

    You mentioned in another comment that you had to have the 3.5mm aux connector plugged in permenantly in the center console, but my understanding was that this MMI box 'spliced' in to the AUX connection on the back of the head unit itself (in the big square quadlock connector)...

      Hi, I think it’s to do with which head unit you have and which system (I forget the name now, but I think it depends on if you have NBT or the other unit) you have in your boot. There are two types, one you need to connect to the aux one you do not. So yes, you definitely connect to the back of the head unit in the front of the car. Most of the units you move over the optical cable too. Some units you need the aux, some do not. What I found was that If you speak to the Andream guys and tell them about your make, model and year, they will send you the correct unit. :)

      @@aeroeng3 depends on how sensitive you are to audio quality dude. The seller of the carplay box disclaimed that “since its an additional line to the audio and since its wireless it will never achieve the same audio quality as the OEM headunit but it shouldnt be easily noticeable”. But honestly, for me the difference in audio quality was easily audible. So i decided to plug in using the AUX port provided in the cables, still the quality is just as crap as it is when done wirelessly. To me, its like listening to music with your head inside a fishbowl. Theres a small amount of “wosh” to the sound output and the bass it very sensitive. Theres no other way to describe it other than if you played music through a cheap chinese stereo with as little mid range, some treble then put the bass on max.
      Sellers dont get this kind of review from their buyers, likely because straight after installing, the buyers leave not getting enough time to work with the unit to realise how much difference there is in audio quality coz theyre too distracted by the new navigation and carplay capabilities of their car. Leaving them to realise later how crap the audio is but no longer able to take it back for a refund coz theres no better alternative.

    • @aeroeng3
      @aeroeng3 Před 3 lety

      @@GoneDeathMode ok if you go wired the same? Cause i don't mind to be wired instead of wireless. If it uses the Aux and the phone wired it shouldn't have so huge sound quality issues .

    • @GoneDeathMode
      @GoneDeathMode Před 3 lety

      @@aeroeng3 yeh it didnt matter whether it was wired or wireless to be honest. The sound quality was limited either way. It just doesnt achieve the full potential of the speakers.
      As a compromise, ive opted to only use music from my phone (through carplay) whenever i absolutely need the navigation audio cues, otherwise, my car’s audio setting is always set to USB music with my songs downloaded to a USB drive which is really the only way you can get decent audio otherwise.
      Note that when the carplay unit is installed, your OEM AUX port in the armrest is not usable as its overridden by the carplay unit. So if youre thinking of plugging the phone there while using carplay, it doesnt get you any sound.
