- Let's take a look at Ubisoft's XDefiant, which just came out on PC and console. Then we'll take a look at another free-to-play shooter, Combat Master, which has been available on Steam for awhile now. Which one of these shooters ends up being more fun?
After that, there's time for a little Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle: Chomp Champs or whatever the heck it's called. The once-exclusive Stadia game has made it out to other platforms, but... well... hmm.

The way the character gasps for air like there's no air left in the room when your health is low gets old reeeeeeeal fast.
From a game preservation perspective they need to start releasing dead online-only games with basic AI that you can play against offline.
I was wondering what the movement in XDefiant reminded me of - the way the guns move, the sprinting, shooting, etc. and after a while I finally realized I was thinking of Brink and felt a shiver down my spine.
I was totally thinking of Brink while watching, too. What a missed opportunity that game was.

I watched the Combat Master section in 2x speed, which makes it even more gaming.
I actually installed Combat Master after watching this and boy, what a game. Under 2 gigs too. WTF CoD!!! Shadow Rider is a copy of Celty from the anime Durarara!! Which I found wild. She doesn't use guns in the anime though.
I thought Blops 3 and 4 were amazing. The hero abilities in 4 especially made for more tactical matches in objective modes, and were some of the most fun I had since the original Modern Warfare. Different strokes.
ShootMania Storm died so that XDefiant could live.

I think Xdefiant is a okay game, I mean I am having fun for the first 10 matches I have played. But like you said the question "why should i be playing this?" Comes up
To get that CoD fix without paying $75+ and leaving barely any room in your SSD for other games.

It really is amazing the energy difference, XDefiant you just looked bored. But on Combat Master you were all smiles and laughs. So you can argue up and down which game is better from a production standpoint, but as for which game is a better time? Well...
So I just realized the only one of these Call of Duty clones I actually enjoyed and thought had interesting ideas was Blacklight Tango Down, an XBLA game from 2010.
It's weird, if you asked me like a year or so ago I would've entirely agreed that the only thing I care about is tdm, but after spending an insane amount of time in NuMW2's prisoner rescue and cyberattack I'm much more amenable to objective modes. Although if that proves anything it's that you can put tdm alongside your objective modes and people will still play both
But man those announcer callouts are annoying

The headshot multiplier is much higher in ex defiant than call of duty.
I enjoyed what I played of XDefiant and thought it was pretty good (or way better than I thought it was going to be), but I also haven't played a CoD with ANY seriousness since maybe Advanced Warfare? I wonder if that informs some of my feelings on it so far... Although I would very much like it to have a TDM or FFA mode
This is a great double segment because Jeff tore XDefiant's ass apart and then had the time of his life on jank ass Combat Master, which I super downloaded and am having fun with.
Ghost Recon Phantoms was a pretty good free to play objective-based team shooter.

Just adding a multiplayer game to Game Pass is usually enough to provide a large enough audience to get into matches easily. I can't say they stick around after the game leaves.
So in a nutshell: XDefiant's title would be more accurate without the -efiant, gotcha!

it feels low stakes or just less sweaty to use modern parlance
escourt is def. the worst mode. like the cart moves weirdly fast, but also ttk is WAY faster than overwatch so a team wipe is super common for push team and if defence team wipes its basically over for that section of push
I don’t hate XDefiant, but I do wish it had TDM, it does have a kill confirmed game type which I found to be the most enjoyable. I’m just not into all the objective modes especially when dropping in solo.

What about Combat Master vs War Gods?
XDefiant's biggest problem for me so far is that the leveling up is insanely slow. I've gotten the MVP stuff that is supposed to beef up the XP you earn and I'm still like a level 8 at 2 hours in. I don't feel like I'm making any progress and it's this weird 50/50 of "So do I want to try to level up this AK47 with no attachments that will take me like 3 hours to do so and go like 14-16 and suck or just use the preset loadout and dominate but make zero progress at all towards unlocks?"
Then there's the challenges and unlocks for doing challenges that make you purposely avoid playing the actual game just to get those done, so you are basically gonna sell your team just to get a proximity mine. Escort sucks ass, there's maps where it's so insanely one sided. Zone Control is ok but it largely resorts into people spawning close to the point and then getting like 25 points of holding an objective because everybody held it.
Edit: Also the colors are intense like that because Jeff is literally colorblind lmao
Another fucking edit: I played on console and the aim assist was so fucking bad that i turned that shit off. It would drift my aim to their hip which did significantly less damage and I was getting smoked like every fire fight. That shit is a two pack of ass.

I'm gonna be totally honest I find it very silly when FPS games think they're above having TDM/DM modes. It's a fun fuckin game mode. Who cares if CoD has it. We know you're not CoD. It's okay, I promise.
Like the gameplay is alright at best, but it barely plays at its best. The audio is fucking awful, especially the gunshot sounds. I really wanted this game to be good but it feels like it took the worst parts of OG COD with stuff from overwatch.
I am one of the only people in the universe that actually liked that free to play fps ubisoft made with all the bouncing in it. Not remembering the name of it because it was so unmemorable - erm - Hyperscape I think. Xdefiant looks like that. But with nothing that made that game fun, ie the bouncing.

XDefiant was just so generic and bland... and the performance was bad on a PS5. Then I toggled the 120 Hz mode (good for them for including it, I've gotten used to it in Warzone) and it was smooth af. Still didn't make the game any better. Two matches was all I needed to probably never play XDefiant again.

Off brand, ripoff ubi characters that are actually made by ubi is depressing af. Hell even Blacklist Sam Fisher would liven this thing up a bit.
