  • In this video I show how to make a horse head using old used horseshoes. It involves very basic welding skills and a lot of cutting and hammering! It could have been made easier if I had a way of heating the horseshoes, making them easier to bend and shape. But I don't so I just had to use brute force to do so.
I am not as good at drawing as it appears in the video. When I am drawing the outline with marker there is actually a light pencil mark on the wood. I do not have video footage of how I got the pencil mark on to the wood but I will try to explain. Firstly I printed an A4 size outline drawing of a horse head. I then got the biggest piece of cardboard I could find which was about 1M square. You can tape bits together if you can't get a piece that size. I then placed the A4 sheet in the centre of the card board and with a utility knife I cut the outline out through the A4 sheet and the cardboard. Find a blank wall and hang the cardboard from the ceiling or prop it up approx 1.2M away from the wall. Switch off all the lights in the room and turn on the light on your cell phone and place it behind the cardboard and the image will be projected onto the wall. Move the light in or out to make it bigger or smaller.
It took a bit of time preparing the horseshoes as they were all bent and twisted and had nails and dirt in them. It is a fun project and it's always nice to use or recycle something that would otherwise be thrown away. The horseshoes looked well with no finish on them and could look even better in the future if they were left to oxidise outside but I decided to apply a few coats of a black outdoor paint to protect the metal.
Thanks for looking and I hope you enjoyed it.
I also have two other horseshoe related projects in some of my earlier videos if you would like to have a look.

Hell I’m a junior in high school and really into welding, my welding teachers enters me into a metal sculpture co test about 4 hours from where I live and was wondering if I could use this idea since I’ve been around horses my whole life and would be a good representation for me???!!!!

Beautiful work! Wherever did you get all those horse shoes! Must have saved for a long time, or did you have horses? Either way I loved your project!

Thank you very much. No I never had horses, I got loads of them for a local farrier a few years ago. I am down to my last box now.

What would you price that to sell for? GBP. Also I’d keep the drawing as a template/jig for easy reproduction. Fantastic work and great inspiration!!

Thank you very much Curtis. I have no idea what you would charge. You could definitely charge a premium for it. I gave it to a friend of mine who hung it on their stables. Unfortunately I didn't keep the template but Its not to difficult to replicate.

@@EamonWalshDIY I am an American with family in England. Here for a visit. You get different videos here than there. I’m learning wood turning but have always wanted to work with welding horse shoes as we are horseypeople (breeders). I love using horseshoe nails as accents to my wood boxes and trays.

So was just wondering what stick welder you r using. And is it a 120 volt or 220? Love the horse head. I also do a lot of horseshoe art but i have been using a flux core welder and it is a pain some times.

It looked good until you painted it, such a shame. Maybe welding from the rear would be better too...?
A nice bees wax finish would be good.
