Have played both games too. Vanguard is truly fun and competitive. The problem with it is the scarcity of player base. But if Vanguard is a thing in a certain local, then one will have fun playing it. As for Weiss, I agree that the screenshot art doesn't appeal as much. But once your favorite IP gets introduced to it, you kinda get interested in getting one too, which at least is what happened to me. Weiss is one of the fun casual TCGs for me. Excited to see you showcasing your decks in your future videos!

Vanguard as a concept game was amazing. I've been playing since the first set of OG vanguard. It had two big rough patches (Once during the end of G era and then again during the first reboot of V and covid). Our locals constantly flux in attendance but it's stayed active.

  • @akuda226
    @akuda226 Před měsícem +16

as someone thats been playing VG sibce the start of the EN release of VG (i literally watched the anime when i was in elementary school), VG's survival is a miracle honestly, the game almost died during covid due to the first reboot being really bad at the start, got better in the middle, and then just straight up power creep galore with uninteresting effects (literally some of these effects were just copy pasted/is similar to each other), those were actual dark ages of VG
but then Overdress and D Era came around and practically revived the game, literally gave life to the game as we know it now and honestly its been thriving, and i hope to see it grow even bigger.
edit: i will say one thing i wish VG would do is make better beginner product, the first decks for Overdress were fantastic and i wished they kept it up, but they kinda fumbled the bag twice with starter products
but funnily enough they bundled a deck in corocoro recently (yes that corcoro) where its basically what people wanted with a beginner product, so hopefully this is a sign that hopefully next year we're gonna get good beginner product

    • @jaylucksack
      @jaylucksack Před měsícem +5

Gonna add more to this with much agreement
VG surviving is a straight up miracle with how horrible Bushi handle the game. Some can call me a hater but I have been playing since TD01 Blaster Blade.
1st batch of OD was amazing buttttttt I will never say that Vanguard is affordable, yes even with Stride deck option because they are now illegal out of the box, you will need an additional 15-20$ to buy the new QSD to get the energery crest. (But then if u buy it, Nui or Luard will be BDIF- Sure, Nui need tenyi, g3 cycle, g2 eb cycle while Luard is cheaper after the hit but the hostage build will get you time out in touernermant)- Just wait till when they get their promo..... I am think 45 a pop.
Promo will always be a problem here same with OT, every content creators out there already gave up on these 2 problems because how deaf Bushi is to it's international audience.
Banlist is like months late compared to Japan, even with additional data, they will just copy and paste the ban list.
To who watching this vid and thinking of starting VG, don't. Play Wiess, OP, Pokemon. This game ain't it without the nostalgia due to the cost to play it

I'd say that with Vanguard, it still follows the whole Magic system of playing a slower resource game. What I love about Vanguard is that you can make last minute comebacks with the trigger mechanic. It's both a blessing and curse but makes for some very memorable moments overall. Not only that, but your damage also being a resource was a really cool concept that stood out to me. As a fellow Charmout player, the deck is very beginner friendly. You'll be swinging for big numbers and drawing a lot of cards.

I just don't agree with Vanguard being a slow resource game like MTG..
The game has no mana system, every card does something, you play much more every turn and can play more from the beginning if you choose to, you draw much more and there are no costs to play any card only to activate abilities and those are normally easy to be able to pay if playing correctly..
The trigger mechanic won't save you so often if you don't play correctly with the exception of overtriggers which everyone wants to see out of the game hahah

    • @johnnywu8708
      @johnnywu8708 Před měsícem

@@DDFKPD I thought about it, and I think you're partially right. Vanguard isn't as slow as something like Magic where the first turn or two is generally setting up lands (from my limited knowledge) for future turns. However, I will still stand by my point that Vanguard is a resource game. Just about every decision you make is a resource trade albeit some more indirectly than others, and being able to make the right call each time is what the game's all about. As for the trigger mechanic, I find that it does come up often, even if a player isn't playing optimally or is making misplays. When two high level players duke it out, triggers can affect the outcome of the game, even if both sides are coming in prepared.

    • @DDFKPD
      @DDFKPD Před měsícem

@@johnnywu8708 Haha well, I have no problem with calling Vanguard a resource game, my point was that it os far from slow and very different then the resource mechanics of MTG.
Beyond that calling it a resource game is great haha the game does this very good after all and the decision making due to that is very fun and deep.
      Regarding the Triggers,
When you speak about a game generally it is important to differentiate between what could possibly happen and what normally happens in most games.. although the games we remember the most are those who had someone triple crit at the most unexpected moment or saved by a heal trigger, those games aren't the common games you see all the time, and players in general don't win due to such conditions very often.. moreover by playing smart and not against your decks perfect counter you wouldn't lose so easily to a strong drivecheck.
I agree that 2 players that make no mistakes (very rarely happens) while also using decks that have no advantage over one another, who both draw into the right pieces at the right time, might end up losing or winning due to triggers :) but the same can be said on any luck based mechanic in any game that has such a mechanic in it so I don't see how such a specific condition is important to note at all 😅
The strongest proof of that btw is that if you look at the results of tournaments you can see that (in general) top players reach the top results every time, so being a better and more experienced player is absolutely much more important for winning than having luck with triggers 😉

I LOVE Vanguard! (Oh, and if we ever happen to bump into each other irl somewhere someday, I'd love to have a cardfight with you, or even a game of GA (btw, perhaps you remember me from a comment on one of your GA videos? I'm the guy that pulled a CSR Diana, Duskstalker).
And I really want to get more into the game. If only I had the time and energy to do so...
And even if I'd host some kind of beginner event it might still be hard to get people interested, since the Vanguard community in my local area is like 6 people while Magic and YGO are by far the most popular with MTG having weekly events at my LGS and YGO having a group promoted at the LGS (though meetups are elsewhere).
I will try though when I have the means to do so (i.e. more time and energy).
Then there's another point of contention I will go into below...
The bit of a sad part is that the D start decks (those 5 bucks ones) are now a bit harder to actually come by, but since Divinez started there were some changes made to the format that entail a increase in deck size (from 46 main + 4 ride to 50 main + 4 ride) and the addition of a new resource which requires a Crest (that goes in the ride deck, so it's actually 50 + 5). The kicker is that the Crest is only available from the new starter products released along with Divinez, the Start Up Trial Decks, which sell for like $15 or more, and you need the crest for your deck to be legal (which granted is not a issue if all you do is play casually or in non-official tournaments). The worst part with the crest is the fact it has so far literally only been printed in the Start Up Trial Decks, with there being special versions given out at events and tournaments. A card, that literally all players MUST have, only being available from a starter product that provides little of value to existing players outside of that one card (and promos).
But the biggest issue with those new starter products is really the price and what's included, especially when compared to the start decks from the start of overDress: the start up trial decks are literally almost entirely vanilla except for the main Vanguard and the sentinel with the skill-bearing versions of the other cards being in the booster set (ugh), the crest and a energy counter, two promo cards, a little sheet of counters for power and critical and a pack of sleeves that lack a bit in quality, while the start decks from early D comes with a full deck of cards with skills (bar some vanillas and the triggers) and not much else (quick start guide and paper playmat of course, but that's in all starter products anyway). And the absolute insanity here? The Start Up Trial Decks don't even come with an Over Trigger, nor does the new video tutorial on the official channel touch upon it! Literally the most debated thing in the format isn't even introduced to new players through neither their starting product (if they get the new one) nor the official tutorial, isn't that crazy?

Weiss Schwarz is one of the most simple game to learn and very greatly difficult to play optimally due to the game only way to stop receiving damage is the climax and that can at times really put a stress pressure when it trolls you.
WS is a game you must play with a open mind and not been salty about the luck, and when you do you will enjoy the game with the resource building up and manage it.
WS is subject to the deck and series, but if you really want a casual TCG that doesn't have to keep up with rotation of meta and ban list that WS is your game. Because I am having a heavy commitment with family and work and the only TCG that i can return after month or 1 year away it will still be digestible to return

I was fortunate enough to play against a guy who played the game in the past, and since I at least have some experience with TCGs(Yugioh, Pokemon, and Magic), the game went by pretty smoothly.
In my experience, this is how I summarized Vanguard. "It's like playing Commander in Magic except your Commander evolves every turn like Pokemon, and once it hits Grade 3 you can V-Max it with another copy. Then when you attack, it's like a game of who has more Honests(Yugioh)."
Overall, yeah it's actually a pretty fun game. Granted, would have to find people to play with.

I will say, in regards to Weiss, not all cards have "screenshot artwork." There is a lot of other art as well, and depending on the series, they can also come from light novels, game images, or other promotional/original imagery. The downside is that there is a lot of that screenshot stuff, and I do agree that sometimes that is a bit boring to look at depending on how or where it was pulled from.

Vanguard is my favorite game and i think a glaring problem with the game started way back in the G series. Stride was a very blatant and obvious power creep that made the game drastically more expensive. Needing 2 copies of a card to use it once for most of the skills and finishers. Then they kept power creeping it with each season.
They thankfully nuked it back with the v series which was great at the time. The anime followed the manga. It felt like the game would have some longevity again. But then the problem there was that the V series was too short. Anime dont have the long seasons like they used to. And a big appeal of OG vanguard was that season 1 was very long and you saw the growth of these characters and things felt fleshed out. The V series onwards, it all felt rushed. One episode it was psyqualia, then the high school tournament and then it was over.
Then the result with the constant nuking and restarting of the anime series resulted in constant format changes or big rule changes faster than yugioh.
The overdress series has done a good job at keeping things feel fairly consistent but its so late in the lifespan of vanguard that alot of the players have already left. Which is also impacting the card prices. Youthberk? If i built that irl when he came out id never financially recover from that.
Dear days is good for keeping vanguard going but good god its expensive. Cardfight online would have done wonders if they didnt cancel that game. The later half of G and the V series is where bushi kept fucking around with vanguard that killed off a good chunk of its player base sadly.

I have a lot of experience with the games though on very narrow formats (most of break ride era for vanguard and 2013-2016 for Weiss). The games late game decision making in balancing aggression; resource management and pressure is bar none. Most of the early game at that time was simply pushing for enough DMG while keeping your hand loaded to prevent crack backs. But those late game scenarios where both players board gets built and it becomes a game of bluffing to see what you would do with attacks and guards are so fun. Plus triggers as cheesey as they can make the game (far more for Weiss than vanguard): give a dopamine hit that even yugioh cant quite replicate. Winning very close matches due to a critical trigger will always be highlights in my TCG experience

Excellent question. Bushiroad keeps making the same game, and it keeps working, it's bizarre. It's also bizarre that Weiss Schwarz came first, I had always assumed that WS was created as "Vanguard but with your favourite IPs", but apparently Vanguard was "Weiss Schwarz but with our own IP". Another weird thing about Bushiroad games is how insular they are. If you talk to someone who plays any of the big 3, they'll have opinions on all of the big 3, and these days also some of the smaller new games like Lorcana or Keyforge or Digimon, but they will never have even looked at Vanguard. And in my experience, when you talk to a Vanguard player, that's the only game they'll know about - they've probably played a bit of Yugioh, but they won't ever have been into it, and they'll never have looked at MTG or any of the small non-Bushiroad games. It's like Bushiroad players are on the other side of a big river, and no one has ever thought to try building a bridge.

Vanguard drew me in because it felt more down and balanced compared to Yugioh or Magic, like even if you where playing a deck you scrounged together and didn't get all best cards for, you could still win if you had the right trigger luck and played your game well. Personally I wish it just could catch on more in the west because I want more people to cardfight. Its a great game past the fact its hard to find other players.

I can't comment for vanguard since I don't really play the game.
But for WS, I too am surprised that the game is still around.
For context, I played jp WS from 2009 to 2015. I supposed the game had since evolved and changed for the better.
Cause in my hometown, I do feel that the player pool has been stagnant, ie no growth, newbies coming in, but oldies leaving.
I used to like the business model of WS, just buy into one IP and that's it. Just play what you like and that's all cool. I used to have a max-rarity Yuki Nagato (The melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi) fan deck - full foils, VA signature stamps and relevant promo cards.
But the problem to me and many oldies is that this model is seasonal. Once your favorite IP had passed their time, then there is no incentive for Bushiroad to upkeep that IP. Powercreep and whatnot soon burn the interest away, and that's how I left the game completely.
There was a time when the mix & match format for WS was interesting, I would have continued playing WS if Bushiroad had not killed it off. Context - there was a broken combo involving a number of IPs, and the end state of that combo was that the opponent would have 0 cards in hand. Bushiroad probably panic and made all IPs going forward interact within themselves only. There's no more drive to think of interesting card interactions, no fresh ideas, decks within any given IP just build itself around 1 or 2 lynchpin cards, old IPs lost in time.
**sorry if this comes off as a rant, I do however wish that your interest in WS and vanguard burn on. Peace.

Sadly Bushiroad has done literally NOTHING to address the issues as to why Vanguard has been dead in North America since the COVID-19 Pandemic started. For starters, making the game more affordable and accessible with more print runs and reprints of popular cards would be a good start. Designing promo cards that are staples in specific decks in order to bait players into playing at official events as a crutch for TERRIBLE prize support is just downright insulting.
Bushiroad REALLY should've followed what Konami did with Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel to get more new and old players into Vanguard that's free to download but instead decided to charge $70 for a Triple A game on the Nintendo Switch when it's brought less players into Vanguard while also causing veterans of the game to quit entirely. Also the OverTrigger NEEDS TO GO or at least design new cards that make this broken game mechanic less broken. Did I also mention that Vanguard has been rebooted twice already?
For the love of God Bushiroad, PLEASE make the official Tournament Structure for Vanguard Best 2 out of 3 Swiss Rounds with a Top Cut instead of Best of 1 or 2 Single Elimination. I get that the judges don't want to call time on matches for players taking too long to resolve games. Heck, Pokémon TCG still does Best 2 out of 3 Swiss Rounds with a Top Cut but for Vanguard Bushiroad doesn't care because the game is only active in Singapore and Japan. Bushiroad stopped caring about North America YEARS ago.

I agree that IP appeal is one of the biggest reasons the games have survived. For Weiss Schwarz especially. Even if you don't like the gameplay, you can buy the cards, the booster packs, etc. to get cool merchandise dor series you enjoy!
But then for the folks that do enjoy the gameplay, they have that as their primary motivating factor. Add to that fact that Series can only be played by themselves (i.e. a Frieren deck can only play Frieren cards) and it makes decks really easy to build, since you don't need some random card that was last printed 10 years ago (unless your series had an older set.) So it doesn't have the same shortcomings as Yugioh and Magic sometimes run into, where decks get this huge price barrier to be played competitively.

Vanguard was such a fun game the thing that prevents people from getting into and making it bigger than it can be is the fear of another reboot. I’ve personally have gone through 2 of them and it hurts knowing all your cards that you loved instantly become unusable due to the reboot. After the second one I was done game is to risky.

Bushiroad literally announced they had a 10 year plan with D though, and we're only on the 3rd year. The game is not going to reboot again, at least not for another good while, if at all.
And now V Premium (the 2018 reboot, which was Standard until the 2021 reboot overDress) has been relegated to side events, and once all grade 1 supporters for G Guardians are out there'll likely be no more V cards. D is on track to have had more main booster sets than any of it's predecessors (OG and G had 17 and 14 respectively, V had 12, and D+DZ so far has 15 (18 including upcoming releases))

Another few things to take into account :
    1. As far as i remember correctly, VG and WS doesnt have rotation system, because as we know, more rotation = more money spent, its not budget friendly, take weiss for example, i can simply bring series like lucky star into shirokuro and boom, my deck is still eligible for tournaments
    2. WS is so much cheaper compared to any other card games because your deck will only be getting support 1-3 years once, and thats if your series celebrates anniv or second season, weiss can get pretty expensive to get into, but so much cheaper to maintain down the road

I absolutely love and adore Cardfight!! Vanguard. 😊 I discovered it through the V-series/2018 reboot anime after I'd become disillusioned with Yu-Gi-Oh!, which I've been trying to repair my relationship with recently. I personally think it has a great gameplay flow, and I love all the mechanics they've introduced since its inception. I wish they could eventually reintroduce a lot of them in current Vanguard somehow. I want to see Vanguard get more attention, which I believe it deserves because it's such a solid game to me. :) Stand up, Vanguard! 😄
I've frequently gone back and forth on Weiß Schwarz. On one hand, I like that it seems to be, as one person once described it to me, more collector oriented in a way. The freedom to prioritize sets based on an IP of interest is nice, at least while it's still actively in print. I also genuinely enjoy much of the gameplay, aside from maybe one or two things. Not that I can be sure though, as I haven't been able to play it myself yet. 😅 I just haven't been sure whether I want to play it out of some sense of obligation or not, but that's more an issue with me than the game itself. Another benefit though, if someone were to decide they didn't enjoy playing the game, they'd at least get some cool cards based around a favourite IP of theirs. :)

Quite frankly the reason why vanguard will always be my top 3 (maybe 1) tcgs is because it’s the most interactive game I’ve played and most fun. And whenever I come from a game from yugioh vangaurd just feels like a cleanse from solitaire with extra steps (love yugioh but I like enjoying playing the game lol) the guard and trigger system is so good the suspense is everything like a real fight. Very rarely do you ever feel like you can’t do anything at all even taking locking and stunning into account even then just play standard. So win or lose I almost never feel cheated like again yugioh. only reason it’s not guaranteed #1 is cuz how bushi has treated the west + recent starters being all vanillas/lack of good starters

It didn't die because its a less popular IP. the game not being distributed here officially is what killed it, the rotations also didn't help, but when a casual deck is more expensive than a rogue or tier 2 yugioh deck (pretty expensive here still) it makes people wonder why they are even playing it. Digimon is also having this problem and will soon follow vgs footsteps in brazil, having a small community and unnable to grow

Heeyyy! Welcome to the weiss schwarz community! Yes! I agree! Weiss schwarz is fun! Been playing the game for over 4 years now and I gotta say, I wish I've found the game sooner. It is indeed the smash bros card verse type game and having (mostly) anime ips as well as vtubers and even cartoons etc. Is just icing on the cake. I'm a player who came from yu gi oh and played that for almost 10 years but that game has gotten worse over the years gameplay wise. Which brings me to my point, weiss schwarz and even vanguard are Fair games! Unlike yu gi oh. It makes me happy to see other card players try and like weiss. I love vanguard been playing it since yr1
The issue that holds vanguard back and why it's not longer in the top 4 card games rivaling yugioh for that 3rd slot like it did in G format is entirely bushiroads inability to keep powercreep in check, and it only got worse since they started rebooting the game several times.
G format just needed 2 cards banned but and I quote "we don't not want to have a large banlist like yugioh" they chose banning the whole game over 2 cards and pandering nostalgia for V format, which killed the game.
They realized 2 yrs into it that the powercreep was so bad they had to reboot the game just to make Over triggers and vanilla the format which killed the game a 2nd time, and by the time they realized what went wrong they refused to accept over triggers are a problem, and started the V era powercreep again while also doing nostalgia pandering.
Unfortunately burning your playerbase not once not twice but 3 times typically causes them to move to other games.
I love vanguard and Fated Clash & Illusionary Strife make an amazing cube format but unfortunately bushiroad has taken too long to find a middle ground and I don't think it will last much longer but who knows it survived 2 reboots, I'm sure the next one next year or the year after will fix the game surely

Welcome to the world of bushi OG cardgame. Where luck genuinely run supreme than any tactics you'll have.
For Vanguard trigger system is the epitome of luck. Especially when they introduced Over triggers.
While Weiss Schwarz is actually required less luck than in VG. Climax system makes defensive move in WS is basically make your deck as thin as possible. But they also made cards thats actually punished you if you do this.
Be warned they genuinely looks fun now because you just start playing. But it'll be extremely gratings because again, no matter you do luck is reign supreme in bushi OG TCG.
Its actually why it never take off in the west.

Yeah I played vanguard's original first format (the g standard era). When I heard they were getting a reboot (the v premium format) I quit. I did not want to buy essentially stronger versions of cards I already owned, and the whole imaginary gift thing sounded childish to me (like buddyfight, which I also tried despite knowing it was more for kids). I (sort of) recently bought old cards just to try g standard again, and it was decent. But I will never get back and buy or play the new vanguard cards, I will only play g standard.
As for weiss, I tried it recently with the azur lane decks. I wanted to get into weiss because they had mushoku tensei cards and that is my second favorite anime of all time. However, I did not find the game to be enjoyable. Maybe like you said, the screenshot art is lazy, or I just did not like the pacing and confusing rules. I also have no idea how to build decks for weiss.
Shadowverse evolve is my main game now. I find it very fun, so much so that I quit yugioh and am selling cards just to make room for shadowverse lol. Very much looking forward to purchasing the gloryfinder set.

Standard Vanguard is genuinely great with all the interesting playstyles and the Stride decks have been nerfed in a variety of ways which has caused them to fall off competitively a bit. People that play for fun don't even touch the Stride decks due to how good they are (but also comparatively uninteresting since they just rehash something from like 7 years ago but in a new and updated flavour with some new support). I wouldn't say they ruined Standard, especially when considering how good so many other decks are as well now and the nerfs they've gotten (or in EN's case, will get).

to name a few of my nitpicks from playing since 2017:
    >Overtriggers. I get its a one of, but it can stop anything or power everything I prefer it not being banned its better if its 100mil power was lowered to 20k power which is still big
    >lack of premium support or bans/restricts like really there's the same top 3 decks in premium
    >Stride decksets. If they want strides back then just bring it back without the crest and if one is released then it would dominate for a few months
    >promos. Oh tl:dr every Eva deck's prices was higher than a premium deck when the promo was released which they could've made RR or Rs
    >lack of promotion in the west. I swear only youtubers are advertising it
I love the game and to be honest I've competed in regionals but man bushi just gotta straighten up and understand that the west is different from Japan.
Tl:dr: the game is good no hate at all but the company just gotta do better
