  • My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU is one of my favourite anime and this week I break down its many layers that make up its stunning cast of characters with plenty of emotional baggage.

    Well, finally someone who seems to share my opinion of this show almost to a T. Especially the part about the MC near the end.
    Have to say I always found a bit painful to read these comments like "I can totally relate to Hachiman, he doesn't give a shit".
    Jesus Christ, are you people even actually watching this show? The man is broken and in a state of so much constant pain that the pain itself dulled over time out of sheer habit.
    It's like that notorious "I hate nice girls" at the end of the fifth episode. I've seen people embrace it as some gospel, writing things like "Yeah, nice girls suck, I can relate so much", when the point of the entire quote is that the man has been hurt so many times that kindness feels cruel to him because it leaves him longing for more.
    To be clear I absolutely love that quote, but it's a pretty damn unhealthy thing he's saying there and it's supposed to be perceived as a negative of his rotten view of humanity, not as a guideline on how to be a "cool loner".

  • @GlobusTheGreat
    @GlobusTheGreat Před 4 lety +78

    It's such a layered anime. I appreciated it when I was younger as just relating to Hachiman and resonating with his feelings of being a loner. He was like the ultimate loner and I used to admire how he was willing to sacrifice himself for others. Some of the lines from his inner monologues in season 1 I had heard almost identically in my own mind prior to watching. As I've grown older I've come to appreciate the flaws in his worldview, the error in his self-sacrificial ways, and all the self-deception and sophistry that he internally engages in. My experience watching changed as I rewatched to wanting him to grow as I struggled to grow out of that mindset myself. So I could appreciate it on different levels already, and that's apart from just enjoying it as a standard romcom show.

    • @nagarjunprasad
      @nagarjunprasad Před 3 lety +3

      This! The first time I watched and read I was drawn to what I thought was cool, seeing Hachiman self sacrifice and not giving a shit, his uber loner status etc. But as I have grown and with the recent reread I was able to pick up on the multiple subtexts throughout the series and the how Hachiman says some self contradictory things or how many a time what he thinks (his monologue) isn't actually his true feelings.

  • @parmpreetgill8205
    @parmpreetgill8205 Před 4 lety +31

    I've always felt that people were totally missing the point of the showing by saying "I relate so much to Hachiman's character and his ideology". At the start of the show, Hachiman has a very toxic view of the world and society that formed due to his past experiences. He's convinced himself that he doesn't need human connections as a coping mechanism, however later on these mechanisms fall apart and he finally allows himself to be vulnerable in front of the people that he genuinely cares about, and also care about him. As someone that has always had a tough time talking to people and getting across to people what's on my mind, I can relate to Hachiman's past experiences. Even now it's still difficult to open up to people. However, like Haciman, I have realized the importance of human relationships in one's life. Hachiman starts off as a character that some of us may relate to, but at the same time his apathetic and nihilistic mindset towards the world are far from healthy and desirable.

It's not even a fanboy thing or best girl thing either I genuinely believe she's probably the best match for hachi after everything that happens he was weirdly comfortable around her more than any other girl in the series just being himself naturally and I really think she brings the best aspects of the two other girls into one person. It's funny how many times in real life what I thought were my best options weren't and something I never considered was actually everything I wanted and just never considered it until it was too late.

    my personal favorite scene was that shrine one where Yui drinks from a cup and offers the same cup to Hikki and he refuses which surprises Yui at first and then realizes what Hachiman was referring to.
    It wasn't exactly explicitly established in the first season, but that scene really showed that Hachiman was very mindful of innocent little experiences that accumulate to some unreasonable expectations. And that he was consciously making an effort to maintain a certain distance from everyone, and in this scene, Yui in particular.
    And i realized this point when i was reading the LN (coz a lot of Hachiman's internal monologue was cut out in the anime, but he was mindful of Yui trying to close the gap between them since atleast the cultural festival arc.
    It's really amazing how such a tiny, barely some seconds long scene can convey so much.

    Great video man. One of the best aspect about SNAFU is how flawed every character are. Not just the main characters, but even characters like Yukino's sister Haruno. Even though it is portrayed like Haruno is the perfect daughter that Yukino never was. Despite that, you get the feeling that she's tired of putting up a facade of having to act perfect around everyone. I think the reason Yukino is so cold towards people is because she doesn't put up any facades. She has seen that from her mother and sister while growing so she hates that. It also makes sense why she doesn't have a good relationship with her family. Every character in SNAFU is going through some problems, not just the main trio. I think that is what makes the world of SNAFU realistic and believable. I'm very excited for what season 3 will bring. I really love 8man and I can't wait to see how his and Totsuka's relationship will grow. 8man x Totsuka.
    But no seriously, I am ecstatic about season 3 and your episodic reviews.

      To this day I'm still not sure of how I should feel about Haruno.
      At times she seems almost the villain of the story and a source of pain for Yukino. She's basically the Loki of the show.
      Then you have moments where she feels more like an "Agent of Chaos" that is disrupting the status quo and challenging the main characters for their own good on the long term.
      She does it teasing, mocking, dropping little cruel truth bombs about their relationships and so on, but you would almost get the impression she's actually trying to help.

    There have been very few show that made me like, or at least care for, so many of it's characters. Normally, if two characters have almost opposite personalities (Yui/Yukino) or beliefs (Hiki/Hayato), I almost always find myself supporting one side while disliking the other, that's not the case here.
    I love both Yui and Yukino and don't care who _wins_ as long as all three are happy by the end... that never happens.
    And I respect both Hiki and Hayato, and I'm just really curious to see where they will both end up. And again, I just hope they both end up somewhere good (though that may not happen)

      Hyouka. but MC doesn't really degrade himself. he does put his distance from other people though, for his own benefit. like Oregairu, the MC of Hyouka changes in an almost similar way. its a very subtle anime.

    I dont know why but I have a feeling that we would get two endings in this season,
    One for Yukino and the other one for yui as they only have 3 volumes worth of content.

      3 volumes are the perfect and average amount for a season. you just usually see 5 volumes crammed into 12 episodes when 2-3 is the best outcome

    In s1, I can bet most of us admire 8man's silly ideology and habits. We think it's cool, but I think we imitate him because it's the also easiest way to deal with society, particularly people. 8man always acts like a background character and lowering himself in every situation. However, it is by imitating 8man and acting out in the real world yourself that you realise he's wrong in many ways. People starts to dislike you and eventually you're pushing everybody away, even those who truly cares for you.
    8man changed his character, he lowered his persona and started to compromise with the people around him. Through the fight with Komachi and Yukino, he learns that he cannot stay the way he is. He begins to learn how to deal with the cruel society and I think this is a really good development for those people in real life who's exactly like him in real life. So those people who thinks 8man is 100% correct in S1 truly haven't matured.
    Like Hiratsuka sensei said "You don't need to be friends with them, you need to learn how to work with them." *somewhere along those lines cause I forgot the exact quote*
    Society is shit and most people are assholes, but we need to learn how to cope with them. Being a cynical loner is probably not a good idea. We should trust people wisely, tell the truth, be genuine.
    p.s. sensei best girl, without her, 8man wouldn't have been in the service club and none of this would have happened.

    I am relatively new to anime and I tried watching this show on Crunchy Roll in 2021 but I dropped it after the episode where the pink-haired girl came to thank him for saving her dog and he just blew her off and used the stupid excuse of "She is nice because she wants something" and it really made him hate him because even though I can understand being a recluse, being a cynical jerk to others in that extent is just too much. I had no idea he actually undergoes an evolution and drops the cynical loner a-hole attitude, mainly because most other videos and comments about the show were usually just people praising and idealising his loner lifestyle. Also, maybe it's partly because my own teenage experience was different from those in Japan or the west as I was born and raised in Nigeria.

  • @feeblemind

    probably one of the better actual dives into the show and characters from someone who actually understood the characters. Too many people don't understand Hachiman literally has a mental illness in fact most of them in the show do and it's overcoming those things that are the main plotline. You're not supposed to look at Hachimans loner personality and be like YEAH FUCK YEAH HES SO EDGEY AND COOL AND HATES EVERYTHING BUT IS SUPER SMART and relate to it positively. In fact, relating to season 1 Hachi just made me cringe because I used to behave the same way and lie to myself when I was that age as well and ignored, hated/made fun of what I really wanted. He's almost being a chuunibyo in season 1 because in a way he lived and believed a delusion that he understood everything and was somehow in control and better than everyone else when in fact everyone is just as scared and confused and lost as he is and just trying to find their place in the world.
