  • In this video, Joel hops on a scooter and is led by his guide Dang Tran through the winding streets of Hanoi, Vietnam, where he gets to meet several Deaf people who work as street food vendors. He starts off by getting a haircut from a Deaf barber and then makes his way over to taste some delicious Bun Cha. Then, he gets to experience eating at a snail vendor before making his way over to wash it all down with some sugar cane juice. Towards the end, Joel then wraps up his trip with a visit to a vendor who makes him one of the healthiest tasting herbal drinks he has ever had. (captioned)

This is such an awesome and informative video! ASL is a universal language. It's so cool to use sign language

Each country has its own sign language like different spoken/written languages.

@@JoelWestBarish Yeah idk why people would think AMERICAN sign language is universal.. on that note I'm curious how you are communicating? The people you are signing with, do they just happen to know ASL, is there an off screen translator, or do you know one of the common sign languages used in Vietnam? Looking it up I saw that Vietnamese sign languages have a lot of influences from French, like ASL does, so perhaps its easier to learn if you know ASL? Sorry for all the questions! I don't know ASL or any other signed language so I can't quite follow how you are communicating in the video!!

TYSM for these videos!! I'm putting my questions in a top level comment (they are in a chain below as well) to increase the chances of you seeing it! "I'm curious how you are communicating? Good question! I know many sign languages around the world. We both use international sign, local sign languages and few American Sign Language. I always learn local sign languages with local Deaf guides before I meet different Deaf people. It's fun challenges for me! Keep your mind opened as visual sign language instead of thinking too much on ASL.

@@JoelWestBarish Thanks so much for the quick reply! Does it take long to learn the conversational basics of the local language when you visit a new place? It seems like a big challenge but definitely a rewarding one!
