- Dear Friends, today's video is quite special as last week I didn't expect to play some Chopin on the clarinet, but thanks to @Ezra who challenged me to play Chopin étude opus 10 n°4 in the comments of my previous video, I thought why not giving a try !
Known as the "Torrent" étude, this study for solo piano was composed by Frédéric Chopin in 1830. It was first published in 1833 as the fourth piece of his Études Op. 10. This piece, a very fast Presto con fuoco, features continuous sixteenth notes depicting the impetuous flow of a torrent in perpetuum mobile fashion involving both hands.
I have to say piano literature and especially Chopin are extremely difficult to arrange, and I wouldn't dare to say that an arrangement would sound as good as the original piano version, but that was quite a treat to work on that beautiful study, raising the tempo, finding the good key just to make it playable, exhuming my old clanking Eb clarinet to reach the highest notes, practicing my bass to be able to play this crazy left hand...
As I often get questions about my clarinets (which are unfortunately not mine except the old Eb clarinet) and setups, I played an old R13 Buffet Eb clarinet (Vandoren BD5 and V12 3,5 reed), a boxwood Légende in Bb (Vandoren BD4 and V12 3,5), a Buffet mopani Légende prototype, and a Buffet Tosca bass clarinet (Vandoren B40 and V12 3,5).

Wonderful! I love that you can hear every note of this piece with your clarinets. The original is for piano, but some pianists play it like a speed competition, they don't give you a chance to appreciate the musicality. This clarinet arrangement is perfect for the beauty and clarity. Thank you.
As both a clarinetist and pianist, I agree. Chopin revolutionized the piano etude so that it could get the same musical treatment as a regular concert piece, and it sucks how it's become a speed competitions.

I'm sure original tempo was slower. Look at the Bernhardt Ruchti's channel and his version of this etude.

Only discovered this video after the thought popped in my head, "I think it would be cool to arrange 'Torrent' for a clarinet choir," and sure enough, you beat me to it by over a year. Great arrangement and performance as always
I hardly feel I have the right to praise this, given how good it is. The ensemble precision is beyond belief given that each line is recorded separately: I can't think of many groups who could mesh so exquisitely even if they could hear each other. And by the way it's a disgrace that Buffet haven't made you a present of the instruments you use: one could hardly imagine better advertising for the merits of the Legende (and Tosca bass) than your videos. Thank you so much for these consistently inspiring productions.

It's funny because as a pianist and clarinetist I had to learn this etude to the point it burnt me out on piano, so I'm just practicong clarinet until I'm back to normal.... and then this hit...

I don't understand how this is possible. I am a professional clarinettist but now realise I need to do more work! Surely this is how violinists felt in the 1830s when they heard Paganini. If you're Ludwig Spohr you probably put your violin away and took up bird-watching! Bravo x1000 Nicolas.
