I'm already half-French and I lived in Paris for 7 months last year just to work and stuff so it was most likely easier for me because I already spoke French and am already a citizen, but the French bureaucracy definitely sucks...That said I think for foreigners (especially Americans) it can be easily overwhelming or disappointing when you don't have the right paperwork etc. Bisous!!

I'm an American and I have been wanting to go to London for the longest time, it sounds like a lot of work to get there and live there and knowing how to adjust.
If it was easy then everyone would do it ;) the good news is the living abroad is one of the most formative experiences you will ever do. If you can dream it, you can do it. I promise you that you're capable - you've just got to think outside the box and take the necessary steps to achieve it :)
And here I am a 22 yo female college student living in a 32 foot long camper, granted it does have full sized amenities (fridge, normal (not camper) toilet, normal (not camper) queen mattress, flat screen tv etc etc. lol not to mention it’s behind my parents house so I’m technically still living at home but in my own “apartment” which is the best if both worlds lol. I have GAD as well as social anxiety and panic attacks so while my college campus is close enough to commute I choose to do my work online. I live in a rural Midwest America and so I’m pretty reclusive (by my own intent) and enjoy just having cuddly nights in watching tv with my dog especially now that it’s winter in the Midwest and we get temps down into the negatives in Fahrenheit so it’s cozy to stay in with the heat on enjoying time alone while also knowing my parents are literally right outside my door lol
Hey Emily, I totally agree with you, finding a place to live in Paris can be extremely tricky and you definitively have to be careful of the many scams. La CAF is a really good thing to help you pay your rent but as you said, they can drive you crazy sometimes (and I'm being polite here so I won't use any other word to describe them but you get the idea haha). It's lovely to hear you speak French a little bit. Oh and your accent is great Em! xx
Yes, there are so many tricky parts but it was definitely worth it! Thank you haha, I can still hear how foreign my accent sounds - it just never comes out quite right! Probably a stupid question, but what the heck: if that European health insurance card gave you access to free health care, then why did you have to pay? Or is it only to refund afterward?
+Roy R. Not a stupid question :) I believe it's refund afterwards, but there was a lot of confusion for me that day, so I forgot to show them my health card until they'd already done a lot of the processing for my appointment . Moral of the story: always flash the health card first!

+Hillsdale Hi! I paid about 800 euros/month for rent for a room in 15th arrondissement, but I believe I was quite lucky. I'd recommend doing some research on a few FB pages to see what other people pay for rent. Obviously everyone has different tastes so it's impossible to give you an exact figure, but it is a pretty expensive city to live in. It was over a year ago now so I can't remember prices of things like groceries exactly, but like anywhere you can find cheaper places to shop and more expensive ones. I went to France already speaking French pretty well and had a job lined up beforehand, so it's hard for me to answer that one. I'd say if you're already a native English speaker you would find it easier to find jobs that that is an advantage. I was doing internships though, so finding a normal job contract could be a different ball game. Good luck, though! It still depends of the surface you have, I agree, but you are located in an expensive place of Paris and that can be quite a big deal. Two of my French friends who live in a flat by themselves (obviously because their parents don't work or live in Paris) pay about 350 euros/month for a decent studio, that they share, consider doing a "colocation" (litteraly co-rental) with one of your friends or with someone you trust :)

I am not saying what is the truth, time will tell you, but somehow intuitively I feel that Italy is your destiny, in one way or another (in a good way, of course). +Carmie Basnight , I spent 5 years living in Paris, and actually knew quite a few people from AUP, and i mean this with the utmost respect, people at AUP are snobs, with it costing around 29,000 eur for international students, the school is filled with people from the states, and mostly other rich countries who send their kids to Paris for english language training, everyone made sure that you knew how much money their family had and sometimes it got uncomfortable. I think AUP might just be an exception though , ive heard good things about other schools

It’s an expensive city to be a student in, but there’s lots to see and do for lots of price ranges. I was an intern so didn’t officially study while I was in Paris. But like any big city, I think it’s very varied - I’m sure there are more videos that go further into detail about that side of things than I do :)

And google maps is a good tool to see what your commute would be like. I personally worked in the 8th and lived in the 15th arrondissement. Good luck with your move! :)
+Celestea Deanes I was working in corporate PR. It can be a stressful job anyway, but there were lots of other factors which made me want to leave. Sometimes these things happen, but I'm so glad I moved to somewhere where I had a much better experience :)
Be aware of pickpockets, I know it sounds obvious but there are so so many and often don't even look like the 'conventional' or stereotypical pickpockets!
The apartment was very expensive, but I was in the 15th arrondissement (a good, safe neighbourhood). I was lucky and didn't have a hard time finding a job really. I secured one before I left, but I ended up leaving that one and found another within a week. Although these were internships, and I know for a fact that not everyone is as lucky as I was in that respect.
I think I cover the main tips I can offer in the video, just general common sense when it comes to avoiding scams because there are so many con artists in the city. There will be plenty of estate agents (although that will mean agency fees, too) but unfortunately I don't know of any in particular, sorry! I talk a bit more about that and finding accommodation in my video about going on a year abroad/erasmus so maybe that would help :)

Hi Emily, I lived in France last year, more on the West coast (Pornichet), and not as a student, but working full-time. Luckily I speak French fluently, and I love languages, but they are crucial in ANY country. Everytime I moved to another country, I learned the local language and it made my life so much easier. I"m very happy to have experienced many countries to work and live in, but OOOOOH YES, Every country has its challenges! Hi Emily, Without a doubt, I will say Spain. LOVELY sunshine, people are open, I love the language and food, and their afternoon siesta is really embedded in the culture :) I did learn to have ''patience'' there, as many things as document registration and so on, can take a LONG time to get done.... But at the same time it taught me to relax and if something is not done today then it will be done ''manana'' LOL Only crucial point and big challenge is economically, it's not easy to find jobs there.....or else I would return TOMORROW. :) Rachel

How exciting! I had actually studied French at university before I went, so I already spoke quite a bit. BUT even if you don't speak any French I don't think you should let that put you off. There are lots of language swap evenings around the city. If you teach yourself some basics at home, that should be enough to get you started once you arrive. Many people around the city also have a basic knowledge of English, so that will help you with day to day things until you get a hang of it. And since Spanish is your first language, that will definitely help, as the two languages have lots of similarities. I'm excited for you, good luck with planning it! :)
I don't remember which part of the video I say this in (I made it 4 years ago now), but I think I'm referring to what I was being paid as an intern. In France there's a minimum wage even for interns, which I think is pretty progressive :) obviously if this had been a full-time "real" job in Paris then I would agree.

yes there are still zones but exept for the single ticket (one by one) it's now same prices for every pass navigo wherever you have to go.

+Carmie Basnight , I spent 5 years living in Paris, and actually knew quite a few people from AUP, and i mean this with the utmost respect, people at AUP are snobs, with it costing around 29,000 eur for international students, the school is filled with people from the states, and mostly other rich countries who send their kids to Paris for english language training, everyone made sure that you knew how much money their family had and sometimes it got uncomfortable. I think AUP might just be an exception though , ive heard good things about other schools

I would still search Facebook groups for any sublets, or AirBnB: they often do a discount when you stay for a month. Hope this helps!

It’s an expensive city to be a student in, but there’s lots to see and do for lots of price ranges. I was an intern so didn’t officially study while I was in Paris. But like any big city, I think it’s very varied - I’m sure there are more videos that go further into detail about that side of things than I do :)

And google maps is a good tool to see what your commute would be like. I personally worked in the 8th and lived in the 15th arrondissement. Good luck with your move! :)

In a safe neighborhood? And did you have a hard time finding a job?
The apartment was very expensive, but I was in the 15th arrondissement (a good, safe neighbourhood). I was lucky and didn't have a hard time finding a job really. I secured one before I left, but I ended up leaving that one and found another within a week. Although these were internships, and I know for a fact that not everyone is as lucky as I was in that respect.

I think I cover the main tips I can offer in the video, just general common sense when it comes to avoiding scams because there are so many con artists in the city. There will be plenty of estate agents (although that will mean agency fees, too) but unfortunately I don't know of any in particular, sorry! I talk a bit more about that and finding accommodation in my video about going on a year abroad/erasmus so maybe that would help :)

I lived in France last year, more on the West coast (Pornichet), and not as a student, but working full-time.
Luckily I speak French fluently, and I love languages, but they are crucial in ANY country.
Everytime I moved to another country, I learned the local language and it made my life so much easier.
I"m very happy to have experienced many countries to work and live in, but OOOOOH YES, Every country has its challenges!
The key is to turn them into opportunities. :)
And learn from others, just like you are sharing your story.

Without a doubt, I will say Spain.
LOVELY sunshine, people are open, I love the language and food, and their afternoon siesta is really embedded in the culture :)
I did learn to have ''patience'' there, as many things as document registration and so on, can take a LONG time to get done....
But at the same time it taught me to relax and if something is not done today then it will be done ''manana'' LOL
Only crucial point and big challenge is economically, it's not easy to find jobs there.....or else I would return TOMORROW.

hi Rachel, I'm doing some investigation because I want to do the Au Pair program in Paris, but i don't speak the language, I only speak English and my first language wich is Spanish, so, how you it took you to learn french? just thinking about it it's so exciting!
How exciting! I had actually studied French at university before I went, so I already spoke quite a bit. BUT even if you don't speak any French I don't think you should let that put you off. There are lots of language swap evenings around the city. If you teach yourself some basics at home, that should be enough to get you started once you arrive. Many people around the city also have a basic knowledge of English, so that will help you with day to day things until you get a hang of it. And since Spanish is your first language, that will definitely help, as the two languages have lots of similarities.

I don't remember which part of the video I say this in (I made it 4 years ago now), but I think I'm referring to what I was being paid as an intern. In France there's a minimum wage even for interns, which I think is pretty progressive :) obviously if this had been a full-time "real" job in Paris then I would agree.
