When I was about 20, a friend of mine came to visit me. He was black. My mother wouldn't let him in the house, so we stood out on the porch to talk. Then my mother feels compelled to call me back in the house to tell me we couldn't stand on the porch because the neighbors might see. So we walked to his car which was parked on the street. My friend wasn't dumb, and knew what was going on. Then my dad pulled up and was like, "Hey Tracy! Why don''t you come in the house and have a piece of pie!" Tracy declined because he knew what was up with my mom. I honestly never forgave her for that.

Where I grew up it was the opposite. I had a black friend that called my mom "Mom". My mom died last year and I told my friend that moved to the other side of the state about it. And even though we hadn't seen each other for 20 years he came back for her funeral. That's what it's like when you open yourself up to loving those around you. I am glad that we were raised to give everyone an opportunity to be "family".

Many people grew up without knowing people outside their demographic. It is human nature to fear that we don't know.
If we ever expect things to change we must be willing to go outside our comfort zone.
Start everyday with a thought or prayer (if you are religious). "Let me be better than I am".
Some of the best friends I ever made are from my time playing football after integration of the schools.

As a light skinned white and native kid that grew up on a reservation, I actually do understand. The amount of times I was shunned, threatened, even physically attacked as a child by my Native friends parents, uncles, etc is mindblowing simply because they didn't like "white" people or want their kids hanging around with me or my "poor white trash" family. Not to mention my family wasn't from the same tribe. Racism comes in every color, and it's equally disgusting regardless of who it's coming from. I obviously don't know you personally, but from what I have seen you are a truly kind hearted, extremely funny, straight up honest, refreshingly genuine dude and I respect the hell outta you for that, and for letting the whole world see the real you. When I was in 5th grade I had a new neighbor who lived a few houses down who moved from Chicago. One day after school he was accidentally locked out of his house until his mom got home from work. I invited him over and we played xbox, ate dinner and watched a little baseball. I never quite understood her reaction the first time I met her after that. She was so joyful and full of tears. Your reaction is just as close as to what hers was.

It breaks my heart that you went through that. I’m so damn sorry. I grew up in a military family, around every type of person, every color, every nationality, every ability level. There was no one that wasn’t welcome in our house unless it was because of their bad behavior. I’m so thankful that I was raised right, and that so many more people are these days than used to be. I hope future generations never know how that felt for you to go through that. ❤. I’d give you a great big hug if I could!

i'm never going to pretend to say i know what you went through growing up and hard you had it... but i can empathise with your emotional reaction a bit.
When i was born in 85', my mother was 16 having literally been coyoted out of Iran to Spain as a political asylum refugee during their revolution that k*lled both her brothers, and she would've been next had she not fled. So I was born in Spain, Iranian/Persian by blood only, and was raised secular.. i moved to the US around 10 and became an American. I went to a Catholic HS in PA b/c the public school in my area wasn't good, so i was basically the only "tan with long dark haired" girl in a sea of all very blonde and white people. My FIRST day at that school as a freshman was September 11, 2001. No joke, lol.
I went from never in my life having been discriminated against to hearing 14 y/olds calling me a "sand n*" plus various other vile things.. but the first conjoined term i had NEVER heard before. I've always been unusually self aware or introspective so i never lashed out, but my immediate thoughts went to their parents.. their dinner table and how they must speak for their children to know such a vulgar term that i had never even heard before. I did make a few solid friends, but until i left for college, there wasn't a day where SOMEONE didn't say something vile to me or about me outloud so i could hear it. A few went further with it.. but mostly vile name calling.
THEN.... 10 years after i had finished that awful highschool, i began receiving a few messages randomly on facebook from a few of the kids that had been the cause of my bad experience, apologising from the bottom of their hearts for how they had treated me 10 years prior. It was something i had never harped or thought about for a long time.. especially the people who had treated me badly. They just didn't exist to me until i received these out of nowhere apologies.
My point being, despite my complete blocking of my HS memories and moved on.. just reading their EXTREMELY long apologies swelled my heart and it made me cry too. It hit me by surprise b/c it was so far removed from my life at that point, I had a wonderful college life, and love my work.. it held no weight on me emotionally until i received these apologies. I think it was maybe b/c they had no reason to take their time after over a decade to first find me, then write such emotional apologies.. but they did. And it made me cry. idk. it's hard to explain what it did to me..
my point being.. i will never even pretend to say i know what you went through and hard it mustve been.. but i do understand the tears. Big virtual hug. 🤍

My husband has been a coach for 33 years. I’ve seen this movie dozens of times, but watching you talk about how you weren’t allowed in someone’s house because of the color of your skin broke my heart. How anyone can do that to a child is beyond me. Our daughter reminds me so much of the Haiden P. Character. She went to practice with my husband sometimes. Once, after she had a bad day, one of the players (who happened to be black), came up to her and said hi, how are you to her. She was in a bad mood so she didn’t say anything and just looked at the ground. My husband made her apologize to the player for being rude. The player told my husband, “coach, you didn’t have to do that!” He said that no white person had ever given him respect enough to apologize for anything. My husband told him that he deserved respect and it was a teaching moment for our daughter, and he didn’t want the player to think he was any less than our daughter. The player cried and hugged my husband. Breaks my heart that this world is so full of hate. We love you Jay ❤

It's absolutely disgraceful how small minded and cruel so many of us are and we've just got to do better. The most beautiful thing we're capable of as humans is to unlearn our toxic bullshit and embrace empathy/compassion - it's way past time.
