I didn't go home for the first 8 months when I started. Now, I have a local gig- 300 miles a day, 6 stops, 8hrs a day/5 days a week (my choice), and 80k/yr. I'm good with that. I started in the heyday of trucking, party row on cherry street, ran produce, swinging meat, hauled tankers, flat bed, heavy haul. Now I’m pulling a dry box, working for a BCO leased to Landstar. I make over 100K a year, I stay out 3-4 weeks, go home for a week. Pay your dues, the first two years is the hardest, save your money, prep your own food, quit buying the shiny, double ended knob gobblers, that are fully illuminated, chromium played genuine accessory items. Get out of the truck, walk, take in some scenery, quit eating all the fried, fast food, stay away from flip flops. Take pride in your ride, even if it’s a company truck. Save your money, pay off your bills, save your money, I know I said it twice, don’t jump into buying a truck without having a maintenance fund in place. I’m less than 10 years from retirement, but I’m buying my dream truck in the next year or so, it will be my last truck. Brian, keep up the truth, stay driven!

      Drove dump truck and pup until I retired and probably averaged 55-65 hours a week during construction season and 40 or less during the off season. Got paid hourly and the rate varied by the job. Base was about $25 and prevailing was $55 both of which were subject to overtime pay. We were usually into overtime pay by Thursday, sometimes earlier. In the off season they tried to keep us busy 40 hours a week stockpiling material for the next season. Even in my 60s I still had enough time and energy for evening and weekend projects. I did the regional OTR route for four years and after that never looked a truck with bedroom again.

    @zachschaneberger Před 3 lety +11

    You don’t have to “pay your dues” before going local and being home. Many companies are looking for rookies especially here in the Allentown, PA area and they have starting pay in the mid $80k range. Old dominion takes rookies and starting pay nation wide is advertised at $98k I make a good six figure income as a company driver but I’m thinking about jumping on over to buying a truck and seeing how that pans out since we can have a decent savings to keep things going for a bit!

    Great commentary. I think you're right about how drivers conduct themselves in public sets the stigma associated with trucking. I'm about to go back to driving after a Covid layoff last year. My pops was a 33 year Teamster, but despised his sons from driving. Later in life I realized, he was careless with money, careless with freight, and had no business sense. He passed away due to diabetes but at his last job he said to me, "Son if I had known your brothers and you were going to grow up so smart (I'm the youngest and the only one NOT self employed) I would have bought more trucks! As a 27 year driver (10 as an owner operator), I can vouch for everything you said is true. I’ve been told many times that I don’t look like a truck driver as well. I then give them your same response. I explain to them that there are many types. Some wear ball caps, turbans, cowboy hats, or no hat at all. Some wear cowboy boots, work boots (like me), or the dreaded flip flops. We come in all different types, and that’s just fine with me. I enjoy talking to the guys that are WAY different than me, you can really learn a lot from them. I have a refrigerator/freezer in my truck and a microwave as well. My wife makes and packs my meals for me and then I pack them in the truck. Saves a lot of money and it really is a nice secure feeling that I am self contained. Bro, First and foremost trucking is a choice. Our nation is full of opportunity and I firmly believe that hard work and determination is paramount. Making a decision on who and what you want to be is the key to success. Second, educational decisions are entirely up to the invididual to choose. Upon graduation from high school an individual needs to begin the real educational battle. Something's you can learn in college and something's will be learned through field study. Let's not kid ourselves and pretend the hard way is not how some learning is also accomplished. Third, a father has the primary responsibility of providing economic stability along with security to his family. Financial responsibility is secured in the trucking industry by unfortunately being away from home. An old trucking quote that holds true today is "if the wheels aren't turning a trucker isn't earning." Fourth and final point would be regarding health. It makes no difference weather a man sits in a cubical or sits in a truck. Sitting is the point! If you can eat healthy at an office you can eat healthy in a truck. Trucking is a lifestyle of which is made by choice. In closing I say to you all CHOOSE: To be a trucker! CHOOSE: To be educated! CHOOSE: To be a good provider/father! CHOOSE: To be healthy! Make a choice and live with what you choose. Great video and thank you for the open forum. You keep posting and I'll stay driven. ☮️ from Cali

    The person you describe is for the most part the most common in the industry. But like my son hes been involved in trucking his whole life. He started out as a owner operator day one. Payed off his truck and retired from OTR. He now runs the traffic division of a roofing company. So there are thosr who never experience the horrors of starting out at the bottom of the totem pole.

    Some kids at school make fun of me for wanting to be a tanker truck driver. I ask them why and they struggle to find reasons. No matter what anyone says to me it will never deter me from being a tanker yanker. Be safe out there Driven!!!

    Hey sir, new subscriber here. I was looking through your videos and couldn't find a video on leasing your truck to your company. If it's out there I apologize. But I wanted to hear your opinion on leasing your truck to a smaller company and maybe some pros and cons, possible costs and risks? Thanks and I'll continue to watch your videos.

    Some people like to be employees. When other drivers tell me they've been company drivers for 20, 15, 10... years I wonder my self: why haven't they bought their own truck? They have made a lot of money for those companies, money the they could've made for themselves and the home time too. I've been a company driver for just over 2 years now and it has allowed me to gain driving experience, paying off my debt and buying a house. It's been a sacrifice to be out of home most of the time but now I'm getting ready to make some changes and drive once or twice per month. Btw..I only wear my flip flops to take the trash out of the truck or in the shower...lol

    People don't make money because they don't advocate for themselves. They go to a mega, they take nearly anything the dispatcher gives them, they don't manage their CPM, fuel, time, food properly, and they end up taking home under minimum wage. I would say for someone like me who can not afford a CDL from a school (haven't driven anything other than yard jockey here and there for 20 years) and would have to go into a mega and run the one year or so for crap pay and THEN be able to get good pay going into a good company (especially since I live on the east coast) and can run regional no problem. Many times people have issues in trucking and they don't talk to the right people to see how THEY do it and try to just skate through and expect the money to be thrown at them when in reality you really need to work at it. Trucking is one of those things that the more you work at it the better it becomes.

    I lost 35lbs sitting in my seat not exercising. 200 down to 164 low carb, no sugar or grains. Your 100% right on hometime local. I wouldn't say worn out but I question sometimes if it's worth it. Can still get home to cook my Dad supper on the nights my wife is out enjoying her horses, and make chiropractor appointments easier. But its 5 hours commute every week you highway guys dony need to do!

    Company driver, OTR can expect home time 2 days after 3-6 weeks out, regional can expect 1-2 weekend days every weekend , local can expect 1-3 hrs with family every day , also 1-2 days off during the week Often the 1-3 hrs with family can be extended by choosing to get less sleep. Less sleep = tired driver! A tiered driver is as dangerous as a drunk driver!!! This comment is based on my own experience! ✌️👍🤠

    So, I think my answer is in the comment section, but I want to be sure I understand correctly: I'm about to go to school to finish my 160hours training and then I'm going to take my road test. Assuming I pass, I'll be looking for driving opportunities. Most of what I've come across lately requires minimum 2 year experience. Do I go with a company like prime or swift (😫) to get that 2 years or do I just reach out without the experience and hope I make a good impression?
