this looks really good, im not sure if you saw it but Film Riot did a really good Number 5 teleport effect, they masked in 3d space, so it could also be cool to go one step further with this and mask within the 3d space

    Good stuff!
I was a bit surprised the black and white clip was brought in. I'll assume Tom used Custom Black and White in Pro but didn't want to get into that. A Hue/Saturation could sub in with Saturation cranked down, and Levels/Curves/Gamma before Hue/Sat to fine-tune.
Workflow observation - rather than create several planes I'd probably create one and reuse it by dragging from the Media Bin. This is me - I don't like seeing multiple identical planes cluttering the bin. For a short clip like this example, no big deal, but when cutting longer projects this can make a HUGE difference.
Pixel Sort! Finally, something interesting to do with pixel sort beyond random "That's kinda cool."
De-rez (VGHS)! I like just using the wavy lines... TV damage is another option here.
Tom looks good in a cardigan.
For any Express users reading this comment who don't have the Distortion add-on... Yeah, you don't need that. The standard Displacement effect can use a Source Layer as a Displacement Map. Fractal Noise contains the Smoke, Energy, Heat and Block fractals that drive the Distortion effects. An embedded comp with a plane full of fractal noise will do it - you'll have to shift between Comps to adjust the map (the Distort effects are faster/easier), but you'll get the same glitches.
Lightsword glow is faster/easier to adjust, but a regular glow can get you there. Dive down and find the "A>B Color" settings. Here you can define custom glow colors, like...red.

Really liked this effect, I had problems following it, during the masking. Double clicking didn't set mask to fullscreen, then selecting the pen tool to edit the size didn't work the same way, it only moved 1 corner at a time...

Be sure to place your footage into the Plate 2 Composite Shot. You may need to adjust the effects, timeline and composite shot sizes to align with the quality of your footage. Hope this helps!
