People always mention the start, but not enough people mention the scene where he looks through the adventure book and realises that Ellie thought she'd had her adventure the whole time, just spending her life with him

From another commentary I read that Ellie put the pictures in when she was in the hospital as you can see tape and scissors on the night stand. Something that I had missed the many times that I watched that scène.
The opening sequence of Up is practically guaranteed to make you cry. It's high on the list of heartbreaking moments in movies.

We took the kids to see this in the theater. We were thinking we'd sleep through most of, just wanted to let the kids have some fun. 15 minutes in all the adults were bawling uncontrollably. My 9 year old son looked at us and said "What's wrong with you all? I can't take you anywhere. " The kids just laughed all the way through, the traumatic stuff went right over their heads.
Haha! Bless them. So young and have not experienced enough life to understand why the beginning is so heart breaking. They'll only be that way a very short time in their lives. Have them watch it again in another 10-15 years and bring plenty of tissue for them.
The moral is you can't just assume something is kid friendly because it is a cartoon. 😒
Me, knowing you’re pregnant, seeing this movie pop up in my feed, and the effect it has on NOT-PREGNANT people, jumping towards my computer like “…noooOOOOooo….” But it was too late to save Mary, and I was exposed to the first ten minutes of the movie again myself. 😭😭😭

An emotional powerhouse opening, a hilarious sidekick in the form of Doug, a twist villain who not only works but is excellent, and amazing character development for Carl. No wonder this not only won Best Animated Picture, but was nominated for Best Picture overall.
The thing about twist villains is that THIS movie proves that twist villains CAN be good if they are done right. At least the twist villains during the mid and late 2000's was at least balanced out with other Disney movies that had classical "obviously evil" villains.

I had a chubby yellow Labrador Retriever around the time Up! came out and little kids would stop dead in their tracks and point saying "There's Dug!" or ""That dog looks like Dug!" and Foster was the absolute embodiment of Dug; happy, wiggly and ready to love everyone.
Labs are good dogs.

Mary, I’m a 60 year old man, and the opening 10 minutes always brings tears to my eyes. Up is an emotional roller coaster. One of the best films made.

Mary, I’m an Army veteran, an avowed forever bachelor who never wanted family/kids in my life, and the first 10 minutes of this movie had me in tears. I always tell people that a sure fire way to tell if anyone is a sociopath is to watch their reaction to Up and The Green Mile. If no tears come, run away. 😊

Sadly, one of the best openings in an animated movie. Starts out so happy, and slowly turns into a tear jerker! Don't worry Mary, it gets everyone. And your use of "SQUIRREL!" was hilarious!
When you announced that you were pregnant, I thought best avoid films like Rosemary's Baby and The Omen. But I never thought of UP which is so devastating in the first 15 minutes.
Up didn’t occur to me either. Nor did Rosemary’s Baby. What came to mind for me is Steel Magnolias.

My family and I grew up with Pixar, but this film in particular is one of my mom’s favorites. She likes to rewatch this particular film every now and then.
Paradise Falls is based on the real-life Angel Falls in southeastern Venezuela, which continues to be the tallest uninterrupted waterfall in the world.
Ed Asner, the voice behind Carl Fredricksen, has sadly passed away in 2021. Before he passed though, he was able to lend his voice as Carl one last time in the sequel series titled Dug Days.
Tearing up because of a movie? Congratulations, you’re human like the rest of us. This movie hit hard for many of us.
Nominated for 4 Oscars including Best Picture but won for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score.
After the announcement of the other day and knowing about the scene of them not being able to have a children, I knew that this would hit you like a truck.
In that sense, I am so very happy that you watched it now, and not before finally getting pregnant, because it could have been a devastating experience otherwise.
Like I wasn't married, or old, or wanting a child, or missing on adventures, when I watched the first scene and I still got my heart ripped out mercilessly.

This movie wraps a chain around your heart in the opening sequence and then proceeds to spend the rest of the runtime just yanking on that chain. The question isn't "did you cry?" it's "how many times did you cry and how hard?" 😭😭
I saw the pregnancy announcement first, congrats btw, and when this video showed up in my feed I was like "oh shit". This one is emotional even at the best of times but having been through what you clearly have been recently this one has got to hit a fair bit deeper. Also hormones and all that... It truly is a fantastic movie though. The score as well is incredibly well done.
i saw this in the theater opening weekend. it was filled with little kids and when the alpha speaks for the first time, it was BLACK OUT LAUGHTER from all the kids. like you could not hear anything at all from the movie for like the next two minutes. was a pretty amazing experience. in this era, pixar knew what what would hit well for adults AND for kids.
and yeah, it is a great shame that you can only watch a movie for the first time once... BUT, the nice thing about these reaction channels, and the reason i suspect why many of us watch, is because you get to experience it again VICARIOUSLY through your fresh eyes.

Speaking of elderly people not wanting to leave their homes I actually moved in with my grandparents because my grandpa didn't want to go into a nursing home so I could help take care of them until he passed away which was less than a year

In the animated category the movie "Inside Out" is up there in the top 5. Some parts are absolutely ingenious. A must see Mary.

The opening minutes of this have more emotional power than some 2 hour movies.
It actually IS pronounced New Hamp-SHUR instead of Hamp-SHI-er, but the movie announcer guy in the opening was speaking in the so-called "Mid-Atlantic" accent which was sort of invented as a way of speaking for radio and film during the 1930s and 40s.
Back in the days when media people ENUNCIATED properly, unlike the current crop who mumble, whisper, or grunt their lines. (Another reason you can understand what people say in "old movies.")
@@Otokichi786 Part of that is because of the technology of the day, whose audio quality wasn’t as good. Part of it is simply the fashion of the day. (The mid-Atlantic accent was not just actors, it was also high society.) Part was the more theatrical origins of a lot of the pieces. (They weren’t doing as much of the “reality” stuff as today.)
Lots of funny and very deep details. I love it when the dogs refer to Russell as "the small mailman."
The opening sequence of this movie is the most heartwrenching and beautiful things ever committed to film. You'd have to be dead inside not to weep openly.
I saw this in a theater in the middle of the day on a weekday. It was the new hit Pixar movie, at the time, so I went alone to check it out. It was myself and a few moms with their kids at the matinee show. When I say that I heard people openly sobbing in the theater during that first segment, I heard sobbing cries. It was one of the saddest moments of any movie I’ve ever seen.
It always amazes me how animated movies can be so powerfully emotional.
I have a few things to say about this film.
1. Up is one of those films that in order to make the ending more heart warming, they must break it first. I don't know why it's only Disney making movies that make me feel so much. Please make films with this much emotion for adults! Kids can't appreciate it!!
2. Russell is a great character for a reason I never hear anyone talk about. His personality is a synthesis of Carl and Ellie. He is loud and forward like Ellie. But he's also a little shy and dorky like Carl. The more time Carl spends with him the more he sees that
3. The metaphor of the house and Ellie is gorgeous. At first he holds on because he feels it's all he has left of her. By the end he realises that he can't live in the past with her. But instead should live to the best he can to honour her memory
God this is such a perfect movie

Theres a couple at my church that had 13 miscarriages before finally going to a fertility doctor and discovering that they are sinply unable to have children. When they told us that, we all cried
I watched this for the first time with some of my siblings and my Dad. I felt really apprehensive as the initial storyline played out since my mom and passed away 6-7 years before and my dad missed her very much in his remaining years. He seemed to enjoy the movie though. My dad had a few places he wanted to travel, but in the end aging took its toll and the opportunities slipped away. He always joked to my brother and I, "Never get old."

This is the only Disney movie I loved that I have never watched again. Saw it in the theatre and had no idea how sad the beginning was. I bawled so hard that a lady sitting in front of me with a child got up and moved. I felt bad, but also devistated.

In case you're keeping track, John Ratzenberger (who played the mailman on the tv series Cheers) is the voice of the construction foreman Tom. Ratzenberger is a Pixar good luck charm, and has played a character in most Pixar movies (most significantly as Hamm the pig in the Toy Story movies).

Cool little tidbit about the place they went : The area referenced as paradise falls, Angel falls in Venezuela has such dramatic differences in height, that the wildlife on top of, and below the falls are completely different. 2 separate biomes RIGHT on top of each other, separated by a vertical face. It's like an extremely biodiverse soup bowl.

I adore this film, and for the same reasons you do. Ed Asner, the actor who voices Carl, won the hearts of an entire generation with his portrayal of Lou Grant (a television news producer and a newspaper editor in two different long-running TV series). He was president of the Screen Actors Guild during a difficult period. He had a heart of gold, although he often played gruff men.
Turning Red is indeed a wonderful film, and I recommend it. I don' t know which Pixar films you've already seen, but I've never seen a bad one.

this was the 2nd animated movie to ever be nominated for the best picture oscar. beauty and the beast and toy story 3 are the others. you can see why it was nominated its an emotional rollercoaster. its also one of my favorite movies ever.
The magic of Up is that it will make you cry in the first seven minutes with barely a line of dialogue spoken.
About the elderly home, it is also very important who the place itself is.
For example, my grand aunt was better off in the retirement home because first of all, she had assitance 24/7 with a button that she always carried with her. Second, and actually most importantly, because she had friends all along the corridor. They gathered together for every meal, they played cards, they watched TV, and then whenever any of them was tired, they simply retired to their own rooms. She could do whatever she did at her own home, but more secured and with more friends. However, there is of course the aspect of not being in your own home, which affects other people more. She lived and died very happily there. But I know that other people miss their own homes, or they never get used to the dynamics in the retirement home.
The opening to this movie tells an amazing story with so few words... I can't think of a better way to lead into who he is and how he got there. So beautifully done. Prachtige reactievideo!

My favorite movie is Wall-E. Up, however, is the most emotional movie they have ever made. I've never been so invested in a character in such a short amount of time.
"Storks" and "Kubo and the Two Strings" (both 2016) are definitely worth watching!
the start is sad, but it is sad in the way that life is sad. It doesn't force the sadness, it just points out the facts of life and love. I personally find it very reassuring that love is a real thing that should be cherished. If the beginning was not sad, it would mean their relationship had no meaning.
Oh Mary....the first 10 minutes of UP are absolute murder to everyone in general. I don't think I've seen any movie hit harder THAT fast.

Anyhow, an important thing to know for the movie is that a "snipe hunt" is the same as a "wild goose chase".
It means "fruitlessly chasing after nonsense".
Snipes aren't a real thing. They're made up animals (maybe birds) that adults use to prank kids - sending kids on a snipe hunt, looking for something that doesn't exist.
Ed Asner, the man who played Carl, died in 2021. He was 91.
He was a legend, and for me personally he's one of the voices in my head.
I can hear how his voice sounds clear as day just by thinking about it.
Not quite to the level of Stan Lee, Kevin Conroy, Peter Cullen or Keith David, whose voices I heard constantly since I was like 6 years old....but pretty close.
He played Spider-Man's boss at the Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson, in the 90's Spider-Man cartoon (Spider-Man:The Animated Series), which to this day remains the best version of Spider-Man in any medium.
As much as J.K. Simmons is the perfect living embodiment of J. Jonah Jameson, Ed Asner's voice equally lays claim to that role.
And that's just the role I MOST associate with him. He's played allllllll sorts of characters.
To give you an idea of how prolific Mr. Asner was, he has SIXTEEN posthumous movie and television roles that have been/will be released.
A series of UP sequel shorts, called 'Dug Days', starring Dug, Carl, and Russell, was released in 2021 on Disney+.
It starred Ed Asner in one of his last roles.
Another short, called "Carl's Date", was set to release on February 10th of this year. It's been delayed, but should be coming soon.
I have no idea how they're handling Carl's voice, but I have to suspect that it's at least partially designed to honor Ed Asner.

These are all on a par with WALL-E and Up! and Toy Story. The Pixar movies after Up! just aren't of the same caliber.
The opening sequence is a masterclass in storytelling. Every time i watch it, I choke up.
in case you are not familiar with the term Snipe. A snipe is a mythical animal that is tradition to tease children with. While camping or doing any activity in the country, you tell the child that you are going snipe hunting. You find a random hole in the ground and tell the child to watch for the snipe and you give them a flashlight and something to catch or hit the snipe with. Then you go back to have fun while the child sits in the dark for as long as they are fooled.
If you look closely at the hospital scene you will see a tape dispenser and scissors on the nightstand next to Ellie, suggesting that she added the extra pages in "Stuff I'm Going To Do" at the hospital just before she died.
"I'm going into Up knowing its only about an old guy and balloons!" Oh my sweet child you are not ready...
When I went to film school, Up's opening montage was one of the required viewings we had. It's so effective.

Just before this movie first came out a little girl had this movie on her final wish list because she had a short time to live, so the studio let her see it before she passed. The movie alone was sad, but knowing this was the last movie she saw just broke my heart
Yeah. I read about that, and it turns out she literally died the night of the same day the Pixar employee visited them with the DVD. 😮
In the English version, she wrote, "Thanks for the adventure. Now go have a new one."
The opening of this movie is often added in 'Try Not To Cry' challenges... People often fail.
I remember watching this in my families home and my Aunty who could not concieve was next to me. I never understood why she and my Mum cried and held each other for the beginning of the movie till much later. What a movie and thank you for the good react video.

When the old man asked the boy to look for a snipe, it's an American tradition called snipe hunting. There's no such thing as a snipe. It's more like a practical joke for kids so they go and explore especially during camping.
When you know that Carl's actor, Ed Asner, died only recently (2021), there's an extra poignancy to his character as a gruff old man on the edge of oblivion, remembering how to live and love again. Rest in peace, Carl/Eddie.
It may be a "kids movie" - but the brilliant artists at Pixar know how to connect with the "inner child" in all of us. I've watched reactions to this film by many different people, demographically diverse.... and no matter what their age, gender, culture etc SOMETHING in this movie grabbed them by the heartstrings. It truly is an exceptional creation.

I have fallen into watching reaction videos exactly because I like re-experiencing the first time reaction to something I luv. “Casablanca” reaction videos were the first videos I watched. It is a great movie with dynamic twists and uncertainties… but I will never be able to watch it again from the edge of my seat like the first time. Watching others gasp! and speculate what might happen is a little like watching it with fresh eyes again. A real treat 😊
That opening is the shortest but most impactful in well film. I cried when I first watched this even though I turned 20 that year.
Yep, Mary, I tell people all the time that this movie will make you cry before it even starts. Carl gets a family and makes Ellie's wish happen, Russell, the tiny mailman, gets his badge and a dog. And, SQUIRREL!

When I see a movie I love for the first time, I always want to watch it again with a friend. That way I get to see someone else's experience watching it for the first time. I think that's the appeal of reaction videos, and why I like yours so much.
The ten-minute love story at the beginning of Up is one of the best every committed to film.
The sequence where Carl unloads his house so he can fly again makes such a good metaphor. He has to get rid of his old stuff so he can get on with his life.
At the end of the movie you see Carl, Russell, and Dug sitting on the curb in front of an ice cream parlor named Fenton's. It's a real place. Fenton's Ice Cream is on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, California, not far from Pixar headquarters in Emeryville. They've put references to local landmarks in several of their films.

I'm a classic Disney girl but Pixar just keeps on winning with these films 😂 This movie just makes me grateful of everything I have right now esp my kids. Whenever ppl ask me if I can turn back time so I can make my dreams come true and avoid the man I married, as absurd as it may seem, I will do it again. Coz that path was the only way I can have these 2 kids by my side. I can't imagine life without them, soo many bad things happened, life became a struggle, I did not get the dream I always wanted but I got something better ❤

I had already known about your pregnancy prior to seeing that you were going to be watching it. So knowing the heartbreaking beginning coming made me go "uh-oh". Glad you took it well and reacted right along like the rest of us...in tears then joy and then more tears and joy. This movie effects anyone with a soul the same way.
I think another good animated movie to watch is ENCANTO if you haven't already.
When I first saw the opening scene of this movie (The first 10 minutes) I was absolutely tearing up and was so caught off guard of how this movie moved you immediately.

A movie with a similar theme and overall plot/character development is "A Man Called Ove", a Swedish film based on a Swedish book. Or you can watch "A Man Called Otto", an American version in English starring Tom Hanks. It's like Up but more adult.

8:27 I know just what you mean. I live with my dad now who is getting older. He's fine for now but he's starting to get forgetful and I'm constantly thinking about the next 10 years or so.
This movie has a special place in my heart. When it came out, my girlfriend and I had just gotten the news that she can't get pregnant, and that it's because of a degenerate disease that will eventually be lethal. So when we sat together and watched Ellie and Carl getting that terrible news hit us hard. But the rest of the movie of them being together, AND Carl being there for kids that aren't his, gave us new goals in live, in terms of being there for other people's kids. So now we are "Oom en Tante" as much as we can.
I've seen this movie before, but as I was watching your reaction it occurred to me how much the old man resembled the actor Spencer Tracy. He passed away many years before the movie was made, but I wonder if they had him in mind when they were deciding what the main character should look like. if so, good choice. He was a great actor and would have been perfect in a live action version of this story.
Don't forget James Whitmore, who played "Brooks Hatlen" in "The Shawshank Redemption."

The Iron Giant was a on a whole other level the first time I saw it. I was impressed by the story.

Years from now you can tell your children that you remember when "Up" and "Wall-E" came out, and you first saw what will certainly be classic for generations to come. Pixar has done many great films, but I think these are the greatest.
The opening to Up is legendary. Also notice how little dialog there is and you still know exactly what the characters are feeling.

I didn't feel this movie so realistic until my grandmother died a few months before the pandemic. Her family tried to continue their lifes, specially my grandfather. Today, he has already overcome his loss. I spent some time with him every day.
