- Did you know that there are 2 different bakeries that supply cookies for the Girl Scouts and that their recipes are slightly different? Wonder no more -- I bought them all and combined them with a bunch of store-brand dupes for the ultimate #girlscoutcookies taste test. Big thanks to Lovely Oscar for inspiring this video and all of his research.đđŒ

My husband calls Girl Scouts his "dealers" LOL. He can't resist buying a box, or 4, of Thin Mints when he sees Girl Scouts......
Kristen Long haha glad Iâm not the only husband with some self control problems. He actually walked up to a stand of Girl Scouts and when they asked âhow many boxes would you like sir?â He actually said âhow many do you have?â The little Girl Scouts face was a bit confused.
Kristen Long your husband and I are kindred spirits
And therefor I'm glad we don't have that here xD
We tell ourselves it is a charity... More like supporting my sugar addiction lol
I finally got to get a box of cookies last month and it was really sweet seeing them try to work out the change from my $20 bill while their moms were gently coaching them.
I worked in a private label food manufacturing facility. At the lower end stores, your Dollar Trees, etc. you are gonna find they are the same basic cookie. Perhaps a few very minor tweaks to the recipe or sometimes no tweaks. The cookie is mixed and baked and the only thing changing is the film to wrap the cookies and/or the box (Basically, just the packaging is different). The more expensive ones, Great Value, Kroger, etc) you will find they are very much like the name brand.
A team of food scientists spent time and money reverse-engineering the recipe after countless lab tests and taste tests. You will get higher quality chocolate/real chocolate (watch out for the phrase - chocolate-flavored - that means there is not enough actual chocolate to advertise it as a such) better vanilla, etc. The recipes may also have more tweaks to make them slightly more individualized for the customer without getting too far from the name brand flavor. They are basically the name brand without the price.
Why are they cheaper? Because you are paying for the advertising for the name brand. Remember, someone has to pay the person who animates the elves. When was the last time you saw a commercial just for a Great Value cookie? Never! The cookie may make an appearance in a commercial for Wal-Mart but it is not a commercial for the cookie. Wal-Mart advertises its stores as a total entity.
Kristi Pavey interesting đ€
I find with breakfast cereal this is especially true. The only one I havnt found to be identical is Cinnamon Toast Crunch, name brand is much better. Otherwise the bagged kind is the same
@@skeetsmcgrew3282 There are some items that are that way. Either the food scientist couldn't get a near-perfect emulation without specialized equipment or they couldn't determine a way to make it at a cost they can significantly reduce. Some name brand companies will take a loss on the manufacturing cost of an item because it is considered a brand draw. Like, customers like that product so much they buy other products by the same company based on that one item. The cost/benefit analysis keeps the costly item on the shelf.
Yes thats true with many many foods and cosmetics Loreal is exactly the same as Lamcomb except for pkgs and sometimes scent
Otherwise SAME except Loreal is much cheaper
Kristi Pavey That was awesome info, thank you!
After hearing hello fresh so many times in a row it starts sounding like hella fresh.
I actually wondered if that was the joke to begin with.
I read that as Hella Jeff and now I'm nostalgic for Homestuck.
I can never unhear it now đ
My whole life my dad would stick Thin Mints in the freezer and I canât eat them any other way. Theyâre so much better cold!
I just heard about this and stuck them in the freezer! Haven't tried them yet but I'm pretty stoked
My dad does the same thing!
That's only way I eat them as well!
That's what we do as well! It was supposed to be a deterrent or make us forget but it just made them better
I love dipping mine in hot coffee until it melts the chocolate coating off and gets into the cookie! Then you have a delicious treat and a dessert coffee :)
*In front of grocery store*
Girl Scout- cookies!! Girl Scout cookies!!
Emmy- oh yes Iâll take some
Girl Scout-Great how many??
*Emmy backs up pick up truck to the table*
Just fill er up Iâll tell you when
Chip Skylark Lol that sounds like what Emmy would do.
When I was a Girl Scout, in 5th grade, my troop had a guy come to our stand and buy an entire case of Samoas. We were super happy. This was back when the were $3.50
@@ShineHatfield Samoas sounds like the kind that someone would just casually order the full display of.
That and Thin Mints. But one does not just eat a whole box of mint flavored cookies in one sitting. Then again, caramel has a similar effect.
What I'm saying is, that if Girl Scouts ever sold Thin Mints or Lemonades here in Chile, I'd take 20 each.I like lemon and orange candies particularly lemon-filled wafers, so I'm guessing I'd like the cookie as well. And I've had chocolate and mint filled biscuits before (ObsesiĂłn), so that'd be a no brainer.
Chip Skylark Hahaha, that's too funny because I can actually imagine Emmy doing that too, hahaha.

You are welcome! Also, Lemonades are MY FAVORITE!!
Me too!!! such an underrated cookie. The troop in my area switched to the other bakers and lemon-ups are nowhere near as good in my opinion.
You wonder, thank you!
Ever since I found out the cookies were different depending on where you live, I've wondered what the differences were. Thank you for testing it out!
Out of The Hat I was the same! My home town area and where I live now use little brownie baker but my college town used ABC so it was fun to see the differences
I always find myself rewatching emmy vids when I need to calm down and relax.
Luisa D Then you hit the jackpot today!
Me too! Very relaxing videos of things that bring me joy...FOOD! đ

Luisa D currently having a mental break down and watching Emmy is always the first thing I do to calm myself down so it doesnât escalate. Her videos really are therapeutic

Hey, Take a few deep breaths and close your eyes. Tell yourself you will be okayđđŒ
Iâve been in your shoes and it passes okay.
My daughterâs friend was selling GS cookies and we bought a buttload of them. When I was younger and lived in a different part of the state, our GS cookies were from Little Brownie Bakers. However, now our area is an ABC Bakery area, apparently. Samoas/Caramel deLites are my favorites but the Samoas taste better to me than the Caramel deLites. This whole video was fascinating to me. Thanks for tasting and analyzing all 8274875326785367 cookies for us! lol
When I was a kid, the thin mint cookie was a chocolate cookie with a white layer of mint on top, similar to York peppermint patty filling. The entire cookie was then covered in chocolate. The mint flavor was only in the white layer. You could actually lick the mint layer off the cookie! It was so good.
Those are the ones i remember too!
In Australia we have our own version of those made by Arnott's (the makers of Tim Tams). Dark chocolate, mint cream and a thin chocolate biscuit (not really called cookies here unless its choc chip).
Girl Scouts: âThis means warâ
My daughter is a Spark (5-7 year old age group in Girl Guides of Canada) and I'm so proud of her. I don't think Girl Guide cookies are as good or as varied as Girl Scout cookies but I'm so happy to be a parent of a little girl continuing this long long tradition of a community of smart, strong girls.
Fruit loops and Fruity Pebbles are lemon lime cereals! I found this out when I got curious about the flavor of Captain Crunch Berries(which is strawberry FYI!). Listed in the ingredients of Fruit Loops and Fruity Pebbles, it has âcitrus flavoringâ.
Imagine coming into the kitchen and your mom just taste test 27 boxes of cookies! đ
I'd be diabetic in .02 seconds....
.....And Shes high on caramelized sugar and butter. Mom can I ha...... "You may have 1"
dreadthedays says â1 from each box ok. Thanks momâ đ
Emmy's kid: Mom can I have a cookie?
Emmy: No! This is for science! Scoot!!
Best comment here đ
I'm over here cackling đ€
I absolutely believe that Emmy tells her boys to "scoot" lol
I went to the scouts when I was a child, but i come from Switzerland and here when we sold cookies we always made them ourselves, we also distributed self made bread on Sundays sometimes. It's interesting to see the differences of scouts in different countries. Also we only baked cookies once a year, around Christmas. We sold them on the market, we didn't go from house to house.
The Great Value brand Samoas and Thin Mints are delicious. Walmart did an excellent job with their knockoffs. And the price is insane.
Yes they are so good.
J. Wilde And I can get them year-round!
Yes, I was gonna say exactly that. Blasphemous, I know, but I believe the Walmart thin mints are superior to the GS ones. They freeze better, and they're just better overall but I only have access to the Little Brownie Baker version of the thin mints so I could be biased. The ABC ones sound lovely.
I like their version of the Tagalongs, even though they have a chocolate cookie base
Have you ever tried the Dollar General brand ? They are delicious and under $2 a box and I know they have copies of the samoas and thin mints and the peanut butter ones and the lemon ones
When I was a girlscout we sold from LBB, but I feel lucky to live in a place with ABC bakers because they have several vegan options! My favourites are the thanks-a-lots, though my local girlscout troupe told me theyre being discontinued this year đ
I bought a box of lemon ups this year and didnât realize they were different from lemonades. I was so disappointed once I realized it because the lemonade icing is so perfect in the lemonades
The most important thing that I learned from my bestie, the girl scout, was that LBB uses the same peanut butter as Reese's in their Tagalongs. Which are my FAVORITE
My favs are:
1. Peanut Butter Patties
2. Thin Mints
3. Lemonades
I bought from a different troop this year. I wondered why my Samoas seemed different!!!
Both companies provided cookies to my troop over the years. I grew up on Little Brownie Bakers, but my last few years were ABC. I love them all!
Dr. Emmy, Cookieologist.
Of course you made a spreadsheet! Youâre so dedicated Emmy. This is one of the many MANY reasons we love you so much đ
Try putting Thin Mints in the freezer, amazing!
This channel deserves an Emmy Award đ©âđłđ
đđđđđ
Now, that is just cute! đ
Even Vector never bought that many Girl Scout cookies! đ€Ł
My favorite thin mint dupe is the Back to Nature Fudge Mint Cookies. I find that the cookie is crunchier which I prefer over the Girl Scouts thin mints I can find in my area.
Actually, if you need a girl scout fix, find your local office because they usually have them outside of the season. Support the girl scouts all year round! đ They donât sell from the office during cookie season. I used to work across the street from our local office and my office would send me over to get the goods!!
Emmy is the only channel that doesnât overreact to corona virus.
Right? Iâm literally terrified as itâs even closer to my area and this channel calms me down so much đ

Thank you for this lovely video!
Wow! I was a girl Scout way back in the day and my daughter was one a few years back and I never knew there were different makers of the cookies.
The generics that seemed like it are probably indeed the exact same thing, just with different packaging! Outsourcing the product to a third-party producer is one of the ways they're able to save costs on generic goods, so a lot of the times factories will do a run for one brand and simply change the packaging/labeling for the same product for another brand immediately thereafter. If the info of where they're sourced from is available on the packaging (in Europe, you get at least the corporate location), you might find that the production company is the same!
You have the best job on the planet!
Also, it was such a comfort to see the Girl Scouts selling outside the store I went to today, with all the craziness going on right now. I couldn't help but indulge in a few boxes.
In my kid's council cookies (ABC) are $4 per box and we offer $6 shipping on 5 to 12 packages! You gotta have our [superior] thin mints and lemonades!
I am a longtime fan, thank you for the years of entertainment.
As far as Iâm concerned, there is NEVER enough mint flavor in things that are mint flavored. I LOVE MINT!!!!
YES ME TOO!!!
Growing up in New Hampshire, I was shocked when I learned that Girl Scouts was changing the name of the Samoas to Caramel DeLites, but I was confused when the box never changed. Now I know that NH supplies the Little Brownie Baker brand hahaha Funny how I grew up at 7 minute drive from Massachusetts, but still only encountered Samoas and Do-Si-Dos, rather than the other names. I live in San Francisco now and they sell Little Brownie Baker cookies, too.
YOURE TELLING ME THE THANKS A LOT STILL EXISTS. I HAVENT HAD THOSE IN MY REGION FOR YEARS AND I WAS A GIRL SCOUT UNTIL I GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL OMGKAKCJSJC I MISS THEM SO MUCH
If I remember, Grasshoppers are Milk Chocolate while GS Cookies are Dark Chocolate.
The world is ending and itâs making me anxious, however, emmy can literally calm me down wtf haha
What do you mean the world's ending
Don't worry as long as you have more than like three antibodies you're fine
@@shuou2794 cuz of coronavirus
Itâs not even anywhere near as bad as Influenza. Last year 20,000 people died just in the USA from the FLU. The media is just blowing it out of proportion to try to cause panic.
Don't feed into the mass mentality and hysteria. Obtain the scientific facts, put it into perspective and think for yourself. The media always sensationalises things to make it worse than it is :)
Im a keebler grasshoppers fanatic. They taste like thin mints tasted in the memories of my childhood!
I do wish they were dark chocolate coated, but the texture and concentration of mintiness feels right. Current thin mints are weirdly soft and crumble like dust!
My favorite cookie had a 1-year run. Mango creams. They were excellent, Hawaii in a box.
Youâre making me feel like Iâve been missing out in those ABC cookies my whole life. Everywhere Iâve lived (CO, KY, WA, AK, WY) theyâve been the LBB kinds!
They're both Girl Scout brand cookies though? I was a lil confused about that.
My area def has only had the LBB kind tho.
LBB are the best!! My daughter sells in Oregon so I'm biased lol but our S'mores omg! Especially if u heat them in the microwave
Wisconsin has the ABC cookies. If you're ever up here during cookie season, they are usually stationed outside of Walmart.
I can't imagine a mintier thin mint.
There's no girl cookies where I live. I was super excited to find some dupes at Walmart! I remembered your first video while choosing the flavor and Thin Mints is a total win for me!
The Walmart thin mints in my opinion are better than the originals :s at least the LBB versions.
@@csmith2005 For real? What a surprise! I don't have other brands to compare. I'll stick whit them!
Your voice is like a gentle intelligent fun brook. Itâs so soothingly refreshing and warm.
As a former professional Girl Scout (Communication Director, Michigan Metro Council) I can tell you more about cookies than you need to know! GSUSA requires the bakers to make a Thin Mint, Shortbread, and peanut butter sandwich. The bakers, however have watched the sales and, of course, have copied each other for popularity. The cost of the cookies is set by each Girl Scout Council. How they divide up that varies from Council to Council. First, the cost of the cookie is cared for, then the Council determines how much the troop itself gets. People often complain about the price of the cookies, but the Girl Scout Cookie program is not about putting cookies in the hands of the public, it's a teaching opportunity for girls. Girls are encouraged to set goals, create a business plan, learn about marketing, and cash management. If you buy a package of Girl Scout Cookies, be sure to ask the girl selling them what her goal is for the cookie program. One troop in Detroit sold enough cookies to take their entire Senior Girl Scout trip to Egypt. It's an important program for Girl Scouts. No complaining about cost! If you want to just buy cookies, go to the Dollar Store. If you want to support girls and their Entrepreneurial spirit, buy from a Girl Scout.
Thhiiiinnn mints đđđđđ
The scouts around me do the little brownie bakers but now I want to try the ABC ones.
They're the best.
We have ABC but now I want the LBB sâmores cookie!
My favorites were the savannah smiles, but they were retired this year. Iâm so sad! đ
@TEAPLEASE A unforseen problem was with the name of that cookie. There is an "adult" "actress" with that name. The cookies were pretty good, though.
That was my favorite cookie too đđ„ș
@@larrianncurtis8078 Who had the name first? If it was the cookie, they could bring all that up in court.
@@purplepuffs2095 Sadly - I believe it was the porn-star. You can just look up "Savannah Smiles". There wasn't really a legal issue, though, the Girl Scouts don't want or need even a hint of that association.
Signature Select also has a Grasshopper dupe for Thin Mints although theyâre much bigger. Theyâre very good (and vegan like Thin Mints)!
Carly This is probably the âdupeâ Iâve purchased the most! In fact, I havenât purchased the GS version recently because the price is so high.
Thank you for all you teach us Emmyđ I found your channel a few years back. I was the video where you talked about century eggs and how they are and prepared. I learned so much from that video. Iâm so happy that you teach people about food, why people ate/eat them, and what the food means to them. So thank you đ
The lemonades are my favorite! Iâve had the lemon slice ones. Ugh SO GOOD. I didnât know they had a dupe for those! I need to find them!
What store sells those?
Signature select is from Albertsons so any of these stores: Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, Star Market, Haggen and Carrs.
I just tried Do-Si-dos for the first time this Girl Scout season and I was surprised to find they are essentially expensive Nutter Butters. Lol! Also, Keebler's "Grasshoppers" are a fairly good Thin Mint replacement. Those cookies are also bigger in size than regular Thin Mints.
EDIT: Ah, the grasshoppers!
Pro tip from a previous Girl Scout camp counselor, the Thanks a lots are GREAT for making sâmores. We used them at camp all of the time.
I love videos like this Emmy! trying the same product but for different brands
âStudded with little rhombusesâ. Emmy is the best. đ
No joke, once i open the packets i would'nt be able to hold myself back especially the mints :/
smashcode we have knockoff ones at my job dollar tree n I try to nvr buy any bc I wanna eat the whole box
The Thin Mints are crack, I tell you. Even more so when kept in the freezer. We also put ice cream between two Thin Mint cookies for a yummy little minty ice cream sammich. Crack......

I remember cookie season was my least favorite thing about girl scouts. Standing outside a store early on a Saturday morning at the end of winter. So cold and miserable. Please buy from Girl Scouts during cookie season not off brands they deserve it.
And if the kids donât sell all the cookies you gotta pay out of pocket for all leftovers
Wow so many flavours! In Canada the Girl Guides only have 2 kinds of cookies... chocolate mint and chocolate/vanilla sandwiches cookies
Thank you for the cookie comparison! I love the coconut ones!

Iâve been excited for this one!
Someone's local Troop must love them lol.
I have this question when I watch Emmy taste test. Clearly she canât eat all the cookies before they go stale ,so my question is ,does she pressure seal them into bags so not to waste food or does she give the excess away to family and friends ? Iâd love to know. I do love Emmy so no crappola in the comments please .i am just curious xo
She share's stuff with her friend's, neighbour's etc. :)

So the knockoffs have decided that the ABC brand is the definitive cookie.
Tagalongs will still forever be my favorite!
I think itâs important to note she bought the knock off in her local area which is the ABC area. I can attest that the knockoffs in my local stores are similar to LBB. I find that very Interesting.
I have NEVER seen those Teal Toffee Tastic ones before, I love the idea of that!! My faves were an older Lemon one called "Lemon Chateaus" which was a sandwich cookie with Lemon Cream! Very nice! Then there were uh... Lemon Smiles as well?? Miss those. Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks for sharing! Love your video's!
You actually switched the brands on the Shortbread/Trefoils ones!! Just wanted to let you know, so when you said ABC won, it was actually LBB!! â€ïž
Thank you! I thought I was going crazy when she said what brands each of the cookies were. Having grown up in LBB territory my whole life, I was thinking: "wait I don't remember trefoils not having holes..."
that gave me a stomach ache just by watching it! i hope you're okay emmy! very informative and interesting tho
I got excited at the spreadsheet!!
LOVE the Benton ones from ALDI! Iâve had them side by side with Caramel De-Lites and they are better!
when I was in the Girl Scouts in the 80's, my scout council actually got the cookies from the Murray Biscuit bakery company in Georgia. unfortunately, they are no longer in business, so they use one of the others now. Not sure which one, though. I live on the boundary of two councils, and depending on which council the scout belongs to, they get the cookies from a different baker.
The Samoas and Tagalongs used to be slightly larger back then. Nowadays for my year-round fixes, I like the Walmart store brand for the Thin Mints, Caramel Delights, and Tagalongs (the Walmart version of Tagalongs have a chocolate cookie like the Signature Select, though).
If I remember correctly, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree have the same parent company.
Midwest s out here too. 50s tho
