Hate what happened, but I don't blame the players. Broberg was deliberately slow-played over his ELC so Oilers could low-ball his contract, so why wouldn't he take 4x the salary the Oilers were offering? As for Holloway, he doubles his salary but I think even more significantly he was pushed down the lineup by the Oilers signing a bunch of FA wingers. They didn't owe us any favors, it was just cold calculated business on all sides.

Ceci had some of the worst analytics for his contract in the league. Mcleod was a ghost in the playoffs. Foegele was inconsistent. Broberg was unproven, and taking on a high risk contract based on a small sample size would be the exact same Oilers mistake that was made with Kassian, Koskinen, etc. etc. Holloway was pushed out of the top 6 with the addition of Skinner and Arv. Sucks to lose them, but the increased cap flexibility and trade assets will allow them to replace those depth losses. $7.2 AAV for Brob and Holloway is insanity to even pout about.

It's making that very same "mistake" that you claim Nurse contract is. 4 million for Bromberg? Forget it...maybe in 3 years. Watch and see when Boberg isn't around the best players in the world and other stellar stars as well. I’m in the minority it seems but I’m glad they didn’t match. The Oilers management post Holland has made the right decisions with regard to contracts, trades and ultimately walking away from these accepted off sheets. The cap space has value and although Broberg and Holloway were good prospects at that price the oilers can do better and get a “win now” player at the deadline if need be.
It’s time to stop overpaying on players who are not worth the investment. If Broberg said I’ll go 4.58 for 6-8 years then that would’ve made sense but he specifically signed for 2 to ensure this whole circus would remain when he had arbitration rights if the oilers decided to match.

Holloway was only playing top minutes in the playoffs because of massive injuries, otherwise he was borderline in the lineup. broberg finally proved he was better than Vinny D with 10 games to go, that's not worth 3 mil. let alone 4

Too emotional. It's a business. You play the odds. Broberg didn't want to sign, and neither showed anything until the last few weeks of the year. This is the price of Connor, Leon, and Bouchard- cap hell. Last year, we started with Vinnie (who had 36 NHL games). We made the final round to game 7. With ~$1M in cap space (worth $4M at trade deadline) and draft sweetener, you can get a top 4 D-man. Come back in December, and we can talk about it. Both offer-sheet players could stiff, and it's a disaster for St. Louis. Edmonton fans overvalue their prospects (e.g., Magnus, Robbie Schremp, Jesse, Nail, Kailer, Ethan, Klim, etc.). Can you imagine if the Oil retained both of them, they flopped and had $7M on the books? Ugh. This offers the best odds for the risk. Play the odds. Q: How much for Larson at the deadline from Seattle - he's on his last year in Seattle?

  • @xiaosin
    @xiaosin Před 23 dny +6

Both players signed the two-year offer sheet deal for a reason. The Blues know the Oilers can't match the offer in the second year. If the Oilers match the offer, they only have $16M of cap space for next year. The return for those two players sucks, but that is a huge money bet on 2 players that finish their ELC.
If the Oilers have to match either one of them, it will not look good for McDavid, Draistile, and Bouchard's extension.

YOU ARE VERY WRONG (hosts), with the benefit of hindsight, judge something that made no sense earlier. You can't sign all 'promising' talent to 1.5-1.8M contracts before they play any relevant games (before play-offs). Then play-offs start and lots of other priorities are there. Then they were hoping/counting on no offer-sheets (didn't happen in 100 years successfully), so where are the mistakes? After the offer-sheets, good-riddance, we can't pay 6.8M for the two, with no games in their feet, that is NUTS. They have cap space and can find better alternatives. The only emotional reaction here is YOURS.

Not sure why Staples (and so many others online) are raising the possibility of signing free agents. The original draft positions of the players should figure into the compensation calculations. Feeling quite ripped off. Two firsts now gone for a 2nd and 3rd?
The Blues get players who've developed to a fair degree, while the compensating draft picks are not only lower, draft picks always carry the risk of not turning out.
In this situation, the Blues having to give up two first round picks for the next two years would've also been a bigger disincentive for them to make the offer.
The NHL has to change the compensation rules in 10 years, AFTER the Oilers poach some good young talent from the Blues.

People blaming this on the early days of free agency this year, like the Perry deal are wrong, the Perry deal, mistake or not, had nothing to do with this decision on either player. Skinner, Avirdsson are value deals of proven NHL players. This was 2 young, mostly unproven RFAs that got offer sheets at a combined 6.9 million. It was their right o sign those deals, but signing those deals are why they are gone, simple as that. How they were treated and developed, play time with the NHL club, etc. definitely are reasons too. The Oilers, like most teams were using their RFA status, their lack of arbitration and bargaining power, to grind them down to 2-2.5 million combined. The Blues and their offer sheets, spoiled the Oilers plans. These players were gone due to a bunch of reasons... McDavid, Drai, Bouchard are wayyyyyyyy more proven and way more important than these 2. Dead cap space from buy outs (Campbell and Neal), bonuses (Brown), Nurse making more than he should. All of these factors added to up to a perfect storm. Armstrong knew this and he shot his shot. It stinks, it part of being a good team, that's up against the cap.
Edmonton is in WIN NOW mode, this year, and even next year are their best chances to win, before before Drai(1year left), McDavid (2 years left), and Bouchard (is 1 year left), all go up in salary. The Oilers got out of cap hell, gave themselves flexibility to make moves (like an upgrade at 2nd paring RH D). IF they kept Broberg, and Holloway for that matter too (just to a lesser extent) they were basically done. Between the inability to trade either Broberg or Holloway for a full year, Kane's unknown health/LTIR status, being over the cap, and our lack of assets to move (picks and prospects), the Oilers would of been stuck with this team, for better or worse. Could Broberg and/or Holloway actually of worked out this year? yes, but, odds are, they wouldn't have lived up to their new deals this season, and maybe, if not probably the next season as well, because, they are young, and they are still developing. The Oilers needed them at 2.5 million-ish max, once they signed these offer sheets, that ended that possibility. Perry did get overpaid with that little bonus, but that doesn't kick in until next year, his base salary can be buried in the minors if they need to, it had nothing to do with this.
yes, this stinks, but the Oilers picked the lesser of 2 evils, the better gamble, simple as that.
I really like Bruce and David, I think they are smart and knowledgable hockey minds, but they are off on this one. The day these 2 signed these offer sheets a week ago, this was OVER. The work did this week by Bowman, the Cecil/Emberson deal, the extra prospect and pick they squeezed out of St. Louis, the Podkolzin deal, the flexibility that they were able to create was probably the best any of us could have hoped for.
it sucks, no one wanted to lose either of these players, we lost 2 good, young players, that both look like are on the verge of taking that next step into developing into every day productive NHLers. Problem is, we couldn't do it without putting ourselves in salary cap hell. No matter what the Oilers chose to do today, it was going to be less than ideal, the second those 2 offer sheets were signed, there was no GREAT outcome for the OIlers. Nothing they did, or could realistically do, was better than having Broberg and Holloway signed at a combined 2.1 to 2.5 million, it's as simple as that.

The MONSTER POINT these two gentlemen have completely missed is that if you pay Broberg and Holloway those salaries it will make other players on the team furious! Several star players took big discounts to help the team win. What does it say if you massively overpay these two punks? You would absolutely positively DESTROY the morale and team spirit in the dressing room. Moreover, these two players would be demonized by the rest of the team. I try to be impartial and honest and in this particular situation, Stan Bowman did the right thing. Now we have no fear when it's time to activate one of the best power forwards on the planet in Evander "The Real Deal" Kane. I say all this really liking the potential of both Broberg and Holloway. It wasn't supposed to end this way with these two players but what has transpired is what's best for the team. That's what really matters, period! Next topic of conversation. ..

I'm surprised how hung up you are on losing these 2 players. $7 million for Broberg and Holloway is a lot of money for 2 young, unproven players. Especially when veteran players are returning on discounts and we have major contract extensions coming up.
Also, Broberg played 9 playoff games and 2 regular season blowout games and we are labelling him as our 2RHD which is also his off-side? I'm happy the Oilers didn't match and instead are giving themselves cap space to play with during the season in case Ty Emberson or Stecher or Brown don't work out. Kulak has been vocal about not wanting to play his off-side as 2RHD. Personally, I'm almost as optimistic that Ty Emberson can play with Nurse at 2RHD as I was with Broberg. We already have Nurse at $9.25 million and overpaid - we can't do the same with Broberg who is too young to hand $4.5 million.

One thing I see in this discussion; the Oilers have a long, dismal history with Russian born players. There has been virtually no Russian player in Oilers history that played up to his contract and/or acquisition cost. Maybe Boris Mironov was the closest player to his costs and Bobo certainly had his share of fans in Edmonton but, while there have been numerous star Russian players in the NHL - the K.L.M. line, Pavel Bure, the three current great Russian goalies, Ovechkin, Malkin, et al - the Oilers have never been close to getting a Russian star, much less superstar, player. This latest signing of a Russian born player just continues a long trend. Stan Bowman can be forgiven for not knowing this but Jeff Jackson should certainly know this by now. I get it, the Russian is cheap, but it's very likely that there are several other players around the league who are at the Russian's price point and situation with more upside. By now it seems obvious that the Oilers should avoid Russian non-star players like the plague.
