Just a tip from a horse hauler. If you cross the safety chains above the receiver hitch prior to attaching, if the trailer ever comes loose you will be able to stop it. The way shown always allows the tongue to dig in violently snapping the chains and creating a runaway trailer. Even if you do it the first way, it sucks if it comes loose.
Some states will fine you for hooking the chains straight on. You need to cross them so the tongue will land on the chains if it should come loose.
This is so awesome! I just bought a model Y, can't wait to tow
This was super helpful. Thanks. Heading to grab a trailer now.
Thank you for the video sir! I just received my Model Y '21 Long Range with Tow Hitch yesterday. Your video was very helpful and I'll keep in mind that the AutoSteer is not enabled when driving. I'm sure Watt Hours per mile will be effected, I can't wait to put "Shenobi" to use- Tesla Love from Orange County, CA!
Thanks for your great video. I saw that it doubled the energy cost while trailer is on. But I still added it when I ordered Model Y today.
Thanks for posting. Glad to see a Tesla that has a towing option available from the factory. You can install a hitch on the model 3 yourself but it looks like a bit of a headache.
Very informative! Enjoy ur car!
Great to see videos of towing with the model Y. Thanks!
Thank you Thomas!
Saw a guy at the Waco supercharger pulling a small Airstream 20' maybe. Expect about a 120 mile range on flat ground driving conservatively. That was a Y LR. I intend to use my Y P for launching skis and a boat but they are in storage at the point of use. Might pull a single ski for fun.
That garage is enormous!
Thanks very much for this video.. I just took delivery of my Model Y and will be towing my small boat around alot with it.. I'm really looking forward to seeing what it does to the range..
So how was your experience? I'm considering buying a long range model Y to use for work. I'm a landscaper/gardener.
Update?
@@concealed-tech I just took delivery of my Model Y. Dont have a tow hitch on yet, so cant share any experience on that yet, but camping in it is amazing
7:04 looks like you about smashed into the trailer lol.
I would imagine having creep mode turned on would help while backing into the trailer because then you would only have to control the brake pedal while reversing
I assume you tested the brake lights and turn signals and saw they worked. I cannot get lights, brake and turn signals to work. They work fine with my daughters truck. I did turn on trailer mode but no luck there either. Tesla is to be out this coming week to check. New adapter as well.
Just curious do you have take the trailer off when you want to charge at the super charger?
You will have complete factory install for the hitch correct?
Where did you buy all the necessary items? Do you have any affiliate links for them? 😁
Anyone know if the adapter for the tow hitch comes with the car?
Instead of hitting your hand, you could try pushing back on the trailer with one hand and the ball lock should just close easily with the other hand.
Ah got it. We will keep that in mind, thank you!
I use my foot .... get it mostly closed / wiggle and if it doesnt wanna go my hand is more precious than a shoe love tap :) Ideally can use a plastic mallet etc but most receivers just click in with ease. This is a rental so it has its share of abuse.
i realize I'm kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to stream new series online?
@Adrian Cash Flixportal :P
@Owen Walter Thanks, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I really appreciate it !!
How much did that 5x8 trailer cost?
7:02 Why you cut the video? You dinged your car didn't you! The hitched dented your MY!
Tesla needs to do some improvements on the hitch design and implementation. Having those chains on the bumper plastic is going to be a problem long term, and may damage that plastic is the chains move. Hopefully there’s a product that replaces the hitch cover that just fits right into the receiver rather than fighting with the plastic clips. Also, for anyone wanting a utility trailer, consider an aluminum trailer which is much lighter than steel trailers.
Always use an impact wrench to tighten a ball to a hitch. Hand tight just isn’t something you would do with equipment that is hauling heavy load.
I did want to ask if you know the weight of the trailer that you rented. I will also look at Home Depot website to see if I can see the same model.
I’ve rented the dump trailers before and it’s an easy process, but they couldn’t be pulled with the Y just because it has its limitations of course.
Thanks for the video.
The only thing I don't like is how the chains have to rest on the plastic. That will definitely get damage or worn out pretty fast.
You blocked the paper tag and cowboys shirt in one frame .... the the rest of the video its like "nvm im sure its fine" lol
Nice vid, thank you! Can't wait until I don't have to switch to ICE SUV for towing my boat anymore.
If you don't mind - why do many Tesla Model Y owners yourself included leave that nasty factory screen cover with NA sticker on their screens?
Is it more like always keeping the TV remote carefully wrapped in some transparent film (popular in some 3rd world countries), or more like keeping the price tags intact and attached or the furniture is wrapped in shipping plastic, with intention of returning the product the last date eligible for return (popular among some specific demographics)?
Hi vadimus2007, towing has been good so far with the Model Y although we do see some range issues. We actually removed the factory screen cover when we got home. I think we just forgot to remove it in the video :) We want to install a screen protector soon just to prevent any scratches or damages to the screen.
Well, range issue is kinda expected, my slightly bricky SUV's appetite for gas jumps almost twice, from 9 L/100 km to 16 when I tow my moderately light (2500lbs or so) boat, a vehicle with much lower drag coefficient like Model Y should experience even more penalty while towing.
Tesla should take note of normal SUVs and make the receiver way more accessible. This seems like a total pain in the ass to set up especially if you dont plan on leaving the hitch in all the time. Everything is hidden/blocked by the rear bumper
Man that is so close to the car it would make me nervouse backing up to it
Great info. The background music is a bit loud (and very annoying).
9:05 covers plate 9:09 plate not covered.🤣
That is not trailer setup friendly ... super tight and I would expect more for $1000 add on. Solid video though.
I thought about getting a model Y- but sorry, this is absolutely terrible! In my BMW I press a button and it automatically folds in and out. Maybe Tesla changes this…

Didn't show the most important part, towing a load!
i just cant wrap my head around the point that the 3 and Y look very similar but the 3 is sexy and the Y is ugly haha how does that happen?
beautiful garage i love pass through garage i want one haha
geo metro would pull this trailer( except it would go faster further) whats the point of this video????
Nice, but never twist the trailer chains like that bro, it make them lose a lot of the strength and can break easier
My initial thought on your comment is “ugh yea, no” but I want you to please explain your rationale on chains that are twisted versus chains that are straight.
I’ve always given one to three twist on a chain so that they don’t drag on the ground on every truck and trailer that I’ve ever pulled. It seems to me that in the off chance that a trailer breaks loose from the hitch that in the intense moment of the trailer snapping back from the vehicle moving forward straight or twisted it’s not going to make a damn bit of difference.
Maybe it will be the difference between how we think of what works and neither of us would understand the other, but I am curious. Is there some bit of information you have behind the logic of having a straight chain to be better at twisted one.
The physics of action makes me think if links of a chain are twisted they have more friction sooner and more during the moment of being straightened versus the immediate snap on every chain link that’s together in line.
Maybe a waste of my time to comment in response to yours but seriously curios of there’s any basis behind your comment.
If true you need to contact U-Haul and tell them they are stupid for twisting the chains when they rented me a trailer.
lol the model 3 has better videos of towing that uses the exact same hitch
Interesting but have a few notes:
1. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE BUMPER DESIGN, chains hanging off the bumper, clearly made by a tesla design who thoought chains just genty kiss the bumper lol.
2. 7 pin connector is overkill for this vehicle, but whatever, could at least have the 4 pin output side by side to avoid adapters
3. Youre towing a heavy trailer with basically nothing inside. So youre not really towing, just carrying around a heavy trailer. Towing usually involves a trailer and gravel, rock, etc in the back. That unit is overkill for your task and im sure in the future you can just acquire a small light duty trailer for 500-800$ new or spend a bit more for alluminum to keep the inside of the car clean.
4. Battery range was not really summarized to show the actual drop for towing, etc.
Fun ask, lets see that rear bumper where the chains rubbed on the whole drive after one tow :)
American trailer electrics are shite ! European plugs a much better design
Funny never had an issue with the 4, 5 flat pin or round plug designs. I will agree Tesla made it more cumbersome than need be.
I lost so many brain cells watching this video. You blur your tag in some parts and then unbur them in others. You also don’t need to back up and go forward multiple times. That’s such a light trailer you should’ve just gotten close and pulled it to the hitch. I’ve never made a CZcams video before. But I will after watching this.
DO NOT do this yourself. Tow balls require 250lbs of torque to tighten. You will NEVER be able to get to the required torque with a standard wrench...
Sad I just watched a man show another man how to hook up a trailer. SMH
at least he didnt tie the tow hooks to the tow pin clips :) it happens a lot more than people think haha or they wrap the chains around the tongue.
😂
That is how people learn.
At one time you didn't know how to walk, you had to learn.
