Forgotten Walking Stick Cane Restoration - Found in an Abandoned Building

  • In this video, I will restore a very old mountaineer walking stick cane that was forgotten in an abandoned building since World War 2. The cane is beautifully decorated with metallic badges representing the Polish Mountains. Seems that the owner was a dedicated mountain fellow. I love this object, and when I saw it for the first time, I knew it would make a great restoration video and deserve to be restored and preserved. I will hang it on my wall in the workshop. The restoration process went well, and I had the chance to experiment with new things, like copper plating. I am happy about how this old walking stick turned out, and I hope you like it, too. For me, it is like jewelry now. If you enjoyed the video and my work, please don't forget to subscribe to not miss my new restoration projects. Cheers!

As a child, I grew up in part, in Western Germany. My family holidayed on the Rhine and in Bavaria. My brother and I both had walking sticks and collected badges. Seemed to recall that they were called 'Stocknagels'. I still have mine today nearly 50 years later.

That walking stick is a massive product made by polish highlanders from Tatra Mountains as a souvenir. There are two symbols of Tatra-bear on handle and edelweiss flower on the stick.Funny is that metal plates are from Karkonosze Mountains, far west from Tatra.Man with long beard is Karkonosz or Rzepior, spirit of that mountains, the next one is from Sniezka, the highes mountain of Karkonosze.Karpacz is a city close to Sniezka. One with deer head i cant see correctly, but it ihas the same form as that with Sniezka mountain. The last one signed as Szczyrk is from different part of Poland.Szczyrk is a city in Beskid Slaski, located in middle south.

At 16.00 mins you said "I love this part" , Me too , there's something magical about seeing wood grain come alive when it get's oiled 👍 nice restoration job mate , It should be a criminal offence I say for good wood to be thrown out especially if it's already been made into something like in this case a good walking cane that can see many many years service ahead, We're such a throw away society these days and it's tragical really, as soon as we don't like the look of something or see someone with a better one then it's in the bin with whatever and Amazon or Ebay get called upon for a new model, we will go like Easter island eventually and just consume the planet for all it's worth 😔

Love the restoration but many would say you took the patina off by sanding it. But also beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so who am I to say you did wrong. I personally wouldn't have done it like that, I would have cleaned off the dirt and repaired the walking stick leaving all of its imperfections. People could then see that it has lived a life before you got it.

Agree. Some people will prefere a soft touch, others like I did, but wasn't a order from a client so I did it like I wanted and as I like it. As well, I'm not planing to sell the item. The most who will think about soft touch is because they think about value/money that they might get for it. The stick is preserved till the end and will last many years from now, eventually some patina will also came back. Cheers!

@@rustyshadesrestoration of course but as I said, I would have done the soft restoration because I prefer it that way. Not for profit its not my way. But I still liked how you did do it too. 👍👍👍👍
