During your home buying search, you might be considering a property in an area with a homeowner association (HOA). If so, participation in the HOA is mandatory, and therefore, you’ll be subject to HOA fees. An HOA is a nonprofit organization of homeowners within a certain area, such as a condominium or gated community, that exists to help maintain the neighborhood according to a set of agreed-upon rules. An HOA might regulate what color you can paint your house or where guests can park, as well as manage trash pickup and landscaping services. Monthly dues are collected from all the members to cover the costs associated with the HOA. These fees can vary widely, but are typically around $200-$300 per month for a single-family home. However, if you do decide to buy a home, know that it doesn’t have to be a mysterious or stressful process. With knowledge and numbers on your side, you’ll be an informed buyer and inside your dream home in no time.

HOA is a prison sentence at your home.
Yea fuck the HOA
agreed they are classist, elitist and racist and mainly serve those with existing privilege
@@niamh8995I wouldn't say they're racist. They don't have (and aren't allowed to) rules or such against any race or groups of people.
If there is a disparity however, it might be because of culture or belief systems not aligning.
Take a hardcore libertarian: you will never likely find one in an HOA simply because they want to do whatever they want with their house. Or a redneck or someone from the hood: they usually don't give a living crap about how their house looks. This is fine, as they can do what they want, but it will mean they can't live in an HOA due to their lase-faier (or however you spell that lol) housekeeping.
Edit: there is of course a bit of classism, but tbh that's fine. If someone is having a hard time paying their bills, they really shouldn't need to worry about how tall their grass is.
Ouch! That bad?
@@eiwrueiwovrhwehr.3132-3 You're allowed no creative freedoms. Your house needs to be spotless and clean, like every house, or you they have the power to get you evicted from the house you own.
It's grown up apartments.
So dont buy homes with an HOA, got it.

@@LowerMyBillsCan an HOA be paid off completely all at once like a mortgage can so you don’t have to worry about it anymore?
no@@tre43210
"like them" as if shes speaking for everyone
@@tre43210 No, because an HOA does not have a final total amount like a mortgage. It is something you have to pay for as long as you are part of or live in the neighborhood/community, like a utility bill.
Why would u want to pay someone to tell u what to do with YOUR property
Then again its the same as the government, but at least HOAs are voluntary while the government isn't.
@@tugalordi dont think you understand how democracy work.
HOA isnt voluntary. If its “voluntary” because you know will be a member before you buy the house, then being under the govnerment is also voluntary because you can just move to another country.
You can elect who will run the govnerment and theyre faced under constant scrutiny. But this is not the case with HOA.
So you are paying money for people to tell you what you can do one your own property?
bro are you guys in america actually got property rights or what? land of the free my ass
Yes I agree I moved here and it’s proven to me every day that we don’t own shit here
eyyo man i can on that statement with ya, in asia, u dont need to pay shiets, well u get some fruits from ya neighbour or invitation to eat dinner or somethin
It’s completely your choice if you move to an HOA or buy a home in an HOA. You are free to move away. Land of the free doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want LOL.
Either way tho, fuck HOAs, it’s just a bunch of bored old people that want to start shit with their neighbors because they have nothing better to do.
People don't like HOAs landlords and Karens does!
😂😂
There is nothing in this world that could convince me to buy a home with an HOA.
First of all PEOPLE WHO LIKE HOA IS someone who doesn't want to own their own place
Someone who thinks they pay to own their house but instead gives a HOA a free house it sounds like
HOA, in theory, is actually quite good, or rather sounds inticing. But in reality, it's awful [in most cases]. Case in point, imagine having to pay a lumpsum of money (re fee) for simply having something on your front yard that your d-bag of neighbor finds/considers as "unsightly". Like, dude, don't be so petty. You could've just ask them to remove it. Also, more importantly, I think. The problem with HOAs is that they're mostly lead/controlled by people who aren't even residents of the neighborhood. They may be owning a property but they aren't actually living/residing in it; they're just some rich guy (i.e. CEO) who lives somewhere else -- likely a more affluent neighborhood.
Only Karens likes HOA rules
So what do you do if you don’t want to join the hoa
HOA is not something nation wide at every neighborhood. There are communities that have HOA and others that don't. So you buy the houses that are not under HOA.
I’m looking to buying a townhome but was told that there was an HOA and the fee was $245 a month. We don’t have any private roads or any ameneties, I’m just wondering why they have it.
Check out our article on HOAs for even more information regarding HOAs. This might have the answer to your question, Nico! www.lowermybills.com/learn/buying-a-home/what-is-a-homeowners-association-hoa/
I have a big problem with other people telling me what I can and can’t do with something I own. The government is big enough headache without voluntarily subjecting myself to something like this.
HOA boards: Why don’t we tax the homeowners so that they have MORE random rules to follow!
Thank you, I'm working on a property app and I needed to understand what an HOA was.
you will own NOTHING and be HAPPY, wagie ❤
Thank you this helped a lot! 😊
Makes sense for blocks
Absolutely crazy for Hauses
HOA is not that nice to people they vandalized a mailbox because it was the wrong color
That helps! I don't like the HOA concept, though!
HOme 4 kArens,
I would not buy a house in an HOA district. I don t think it drives up the house prices.
Thank You~
I have never heard of HOA in my life till these last few months, due to how many bullshit ppl went through as they post on social media, from Australia btw
Can one opt out of an HOA?
would love to see them try and take my home
And you can’t even opt out? I’m glad I don’t live in the USA!
Is not a nation wide thing
@@bumblebeeisfree yeah but apparently it’s pretty common
In the UK (maybe just England) we have ‘councils’ which run the local area sub divisions within the country. They run and finance the roads, schools, waste disposal etc. they also have the ‘right’ to tell you what you can and can’t do with your own property. Can’t have a fence that is too tall, can’t add extensions onto your home without permission and a fee along with that. I understand to an extent as it’s mostly to prevent people making horrid uncertified additions that make the whole street look terrible but it’s also breaching freedom. Sounds similar the the HOA. God knows why any American would PAY to be told what to do. Sounds very un-American.
The HOA is in my opinion just a "government like" gang. Understandable they want areas to look decent for potential environmental reasons but then you have to pay them just to be allowed to reside in "their" neighborhood to look like they do and fix THEIR own property damage.
Easiest way for a British person like me to understand this is it’s like being ruled by a group of Karen’s who watch you every move and can fine you for innocuous things like if you air your Y fronts in public or get behind on the lawn mowing - and the final insult being you gotta pay for the privilege too eek 😅
I'd like to see them try these dumb things in the UK
I've been at a hoa nd it was a nightmare
Scam at it fines, buying a home just to be told what to do with it, they even have the key to the house like what the f*ck, and could force their way in and kick you out of your own house you bought with your money? And you also have to pay them? 😂
You got me f*** up if a bunch of randoms are going to tell me how to live my life and what to do with my house. Like air drying my clothes or. What type of fence i can have. Nothing of what im saying goes to the CZcamsr but sincerely gtfo. Who thought thought this is a good idea. You are going to say duuh enough people to where they are still around. Nah bro those people that buy homes in hoa communities are just... nvm ill leave it right there
Meh can't afford a trailer home anyway
I'd rather live next door to a messy garden with undies with skid mark stains drying on the balcony than live under the dictatorship of the HOA.
I can negotiate around such a situation in my own neighbourly way. eg, High decorative fence that adds value to my property and my neighbour's property.
Like??????? This sounds like it sucks also this is legal?????
“HOA paid for the $4M renovation project, by charging each unit $10,000.”
Whoever requested and approved that renovation request aren’t going to be well liked by every unit in HOA.
Why do people do that? Kinda weird you buy a home and have to follow rules about it
They dont like it, they have too because its hard to find housing
1:32 That doesn't prove that people like it
Well she is simply explaining what HOA is, not whether people generally like it or not.
This sounds horrible. Why would you ever want to be a part of this?
Okay I understand how the hoa's work now see I was not understanding how can people say shit about something somebody owns but condos and etc are rented and etc lol
Not even it applies to houses you bought in the neighborhood as well 😂not just rented properties
So.... communisim.. American edition.
Gross lmao this is exactly what I hate… ty for the info though!
In other words you're in prison you're a slave you cannot do what you want to do even though you're paying for the property even though you're paying property taxes and on top of that they tax you so they can tell you what to do good Lord what is this world coming to who needs an HOA just another person that tells you what to do with your own things wow
Thats clearly extortion
Hoa sounds terrible
Sounds like crap in my opinion..Abuses can go rampant.
With todays economy I would leave it. I can plant my own flowers, and do my own lawn. They are bloodsuckers.
What a fucking joke😂😂😂
HOA, AKA. Karen's neighborhood!
Id rather stay with my parents, jesus christ
😂😂no
So am living under communist HOA
smell of corruption here
So by definition : joining HAO is like joining a cult
Or joining the communism party of homes
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
HOA is the most stupid thing I ever seen
Again ❗America ❗😂😂😂😂😭😭😭
How the fuck can this exist, sure no one actually wants it.
an hoa sound awful
What a ugly concept, sounds dystopic
No one likes it, we have less choice.
HOA sucks
They will have a rule that homeowners have to go sleep at 9 pm
