Last night on 40m I heard someone say he uses bow and arrow. EFHW is a nice configuration. I have one. It runs along the top of a wooden fence and then rises to a 16 foot tall inverted V. I reached someone in Hawaii last night from San Francisco.

Great and very useful tips. I investigated air launchers (spud guns) thought that in the areas I go they may prove a little on the dangerous/unpredictable side. So I did exactly what you've done. EFHW have been my go to antennas for quite a few years. I only run QRP when out in the field and I've just got hold of a spark plug UNUN, it's very neat and compact when packed for SOTA. I like your presentation and keeping it simple. Been a HAM for over 40 years and every day is a learning day, never too old for someone else's view on doing things. So true that there are so many ways to do this, but it's nice to see new, or different techniques. I have the same arborist items! I need to try throwing it behind me this way, so many times I've missed...lol....throwing it straight up, etc. It can be comical. Thanks for sharing. Be safe, 73
You're right lol. I just don't include the misses in the video, but they do happen. I didn't get smart enough to buy the proper weight until I zinged a make-shift weight (embarrassment for how stupid a choice it was won't let me exactly mention what it was) right toward someone's front window! I will get on that. In case you can't wait there are other videos or articles about using a Daisy wrist rocket bound in some way with a Zebco ( or other ) fishing reel. I saw one that really did the trick on field day; it was a project of Brian, W7JET. He got his dipole waaaay up there, to the top of the available trees, that is. I will work on the video. Maybe I can post a short of his launcher. 73

The throw is half the fun… Adam Kimmerly K6ARK has some great antennas. EFHW’s are great… but if I can a 26ga 20m speaker wire doublet works well… I rewatched your operational style... Tight & Lite, Simple & Effective! Thanks again!
A very nice guy at HRO one day just handed me a coil or bundle of what seemed like stranded bell or speaker wire out of his personal stash. He went on to share how small wire can be used in ways I hadn’t thought of. I’m glad you shared this about your doublet. Hopefully someone who’s trying to figure out an antenna will be inspired. I’ve used the small wires for an 80M loop on the roof and on another occasion the best 40M dipole I ever had.

On a budget, Walmart sells collapsible storage cubes that work great for this. Great video.

I was always taught that everything can affect the antenna. You are right in mentioning this as something that must be accounted for. Sometimes in the beginning I would let this stop me or doubt the effectiveness of my antenna. Overall though for the types of deployments I do (10 watts and an efhw), a branch or some leaves does not ruin my expectations. Most of my antenna deployments are for portable operations. Most of my deployments are 10 watts. Branches and leaves don't ruin the activation. Sometimes I use the KXPA100 with my KX3. It's 100 watts, and again no problems. I do not have any experience with an amp beyond 100 watts with my qrp radios. I know my antics aren't the be all and end all. However, for any new people who are worried about whether they can do it, I am here to say, "Yes you can". Thanks for mentioning the consideration. Thanks for watching and taking time to ask a question! I generally use the 3mm line and the 14oz weight. Some will tell you that's too much, and some will tell you they use more. You do what works for you! I get mine on Amazon: amzn.to/43XKzx5. Both sides of my throw line have the little S-biner, or carabiner made by Nite Ize; I get those at Lowes and Home Depot. The nite ize s-biners are usually near where they sell and make keys. A good knot will do the same thing and probably be less likely to hang up in a tree, but I have never had that problem, yet(!). Excellent Point how to get the Antenna up into the Trees. Since I have no disk no more my life became way different to what is was before. David & Golliath Method was my way to go all the Times before life mellowed me out to not going that crazy no more. I can't jump high up no more, throwing things with my arms as I used to nor climbing up trees. Depending on which area I wan to install my endfed antenna up in the Trees I have a slingshot with me shooting the Weight Bag hooked to a thin nylon fishing string over the Branches. Grabbing it with my hands to pull down without giving the Antenna Wire too much of tension. Plug in the Coax Cable to the Balun Box and the Radio. DONE -time to have fun 💯🎸🎸🎸👍. One of my club members was just talking about your method because that's the method he uses. Just trying to get some of these ideas out in front of the new ham. @@Bill-HRT You welcome sir. Well your club buddy is absolutely right about what he mentioned to you. We portable HAM's rarely exceeding heights of more than 50ft. from the Ground to work with an dipole or endfed wire antenna so a slingshot works for us in a hard beat when our bare hands can't get the Job done any more.
If someone is planning to install one of these antennas for long terms to stay on his property on really tall trees but for some reasons he can't use a hydraulic truck to get the Wire up then a compound bow jumps in to finish up the Job. There's so many ways to go...I watched 2 young dudes in august last year who shortly licenced up a few month ago who used a quadcopter drone. They hooked up the insulation egg to the drone and flew it over the Top of the highest Branch of the Trees. By my personal estimate I would say they were easily 85ft. tall. These Guys were installing a fullsize G5RV Multiband Dipole 160-10m (204ft lenght).
A heavy heavy mike foxtrott antenna if gravitiy kicks inn. That was so awsome to watch these youngsters making their mojo working. They had to navigate the Drone around telephone lines and a light pole.
I should have video recorded it but I wasn't pre paired this to happen.
Weeks later I drove by the Place again and looked a gorgeous Inverted V antenna system. Next time I see these guys again I am going to ask for their callsigns and names. All I know by now is they are newbies in HAM Radio and I think they did a amazing great job on that antenna installation.

That is great info to add to this story / journey. I think I saw those same gentlemen, and it inspired me to do the same. I used my quad to get my line up into a tree. I am not sure I'll do a video because there's one out there, but you're right; we have to figure it out, pass it on, or use good info that our fellow hams give us. Thank you! Uh . . . Is it terrible that I have never actually measured? I am going to do some sort of accurate measurement and get back to you. I am usually happy to get it up high enough that swr is good on the efhw, and the antenna is getting out enough for the activation.

I got turned on to #26 wire by a K6ARK video. Adam’s video gave a source for #26 Polystealth. I can’t remember the source or the exact video. I did find it at Ham Radio Outlet, so there’s a source for it. They also have other sizes of Polystealth. They have other suitable wire, as well. I have had good success with different sizes of that particular wire. None of this is to say another manufacturer or distributor does not have something you will prefer. I just happen to be content with that particular wire.
While I was at Phoenix HRO, one of the guys was really generous and gave me a big length of what is or is just like a stranded version of bell wire. Really cool on his part! I’m sorry I can’t remember his name; might be Mike at the Phoenix HRO . . . Anyway, there’s another possibility for you as you’re looking around.

The David and Goliath method works best but you should swing forward keep looking where you want to send the line and release as you swing release the line a few inches with each rotation

Just a small note: buy at least 400g throwing bag, preferably 450-500g one.
I absolutely agree. That is the weight of both of mine. I think, if I’ve got my conversion correct, that works out to 16 ounces. Others say that’s too much, but that is the weight I like. Thank you for watching, and taking the time to comment!

They did that twice, and had a dipole way up in the air for field day. I've been promising to make a video on that, but just don't get around to it. You are using a good technique. What us that weight thingy ?
That’s is a throw-line weight. It is used to throw lines into trees, designed to not get snagged while it’s going through leaves/branches, and to be durable to take impact when it hits the ground on the other side.
I want to get my antenna up a real tree, I tried shooting it with a spud gun but that only goes 120 feet up the tree, I want to get higher. Any ideas?
Thanks for stopping by, and thanks for the question! I have only used a couple of methods. I've got a video coming soon about using a drone. I use this device amzn.to/442V6bn to drop a weighted line over the right spot. There are several guys with videos about this method. It has it's own set of complications whether you are licensed, need to be, or live near an airport or airspace with restrictions. Do what's best for you. Recently, I switched to the "David and Goliath slingshot method" which I don't usually do. I needed to get higher than usual. I tried it. I had to practice a lot 'cuz it didn't work right away for me. This may not work for you if the spud gun doesn't. The last thing I can think of is the wrist rocket slingshot, the fishing weight and the fishing line. I've seen that go pretty high. Let me know what you think. Lol! I do remember saying that! All I can say is that when I’m videoing, I’m a bit nervous. Half the time what ends up coming out of my mouth is not exactly what I wrote down or intended to say. If the general idea makes it out of my mouth, I say “whew”, and move on.
If I have to overthink it (which I have done in the past), I remember that honored vessels often take on the female gender. Since I am very fond of that antenna, and it has carried me around the world, “haul ‘er up” it is!

Not knocking this at all. It seems like a great product but for me, I just took a baseball and taped my rope to the baseball with duct tape and threw the baseball 40ft over the tree/branch that it needed to go over. The rope made it over the tree and the baseball came right down. Boom! Simple and easy. One time I even used fishing wire and attached it to my drone and flew my drone over the tree. Worked out perfectly. No purchasing needed. No purchasing of a throw line, air launcher and all the other stuff people buy to get a rope up in the tree. There are many ways you can get it done without the purchase of throw lines and air launchers.
You are absolutely right! I did the same thing with my drone. Most people don’t have a drone, though. As well, the weight is a little easier to carry than a baseball. Of course different strokes for different folks. I once tied my 25ft tape measure to a line . . . Almost broke my neighbor’s window, and boy did it come down hard. Not likely, lol. It's an upscale neighborhood in Arizona full of old people without strageler, free-loading, younger relatives living with them. The only drug deal you will see there is Amazon or Walgreen's delivering heart or gout medications. There is a school next door with ball field; what you see are people going to the school game, illegally parking in the residential neighborhood, and afraid to pop out in front of me with a camera.
