  • In this video we're going to talk about the Pilot Custom 823 from an artist’s perspective. This pen is very well known and highly regarded in the fountain pen community, but how good is it for drawing? That’s what we’re here to discuss.
    For those interested in a more in-depth explanation of my hatching process, here's a tutorial:

    More people should be viewing this review!
    I used to do pencil and pen sketching in my teens.
    When I was going through the reviews of this pen on YT, I hadn't the slightest thought for the 823 to double as a drawing pen. You've just convince me to get it as my next pen! I'll be ordering it next week.

      Thank you! I'm glad I convinced you to get the 823 (not that Pilot needs any help with marketing). It's a fantastic pen for writing, that just happens to work great for drawing.

    Diamine’s Earl Grey is my favorite grey ink of all time. It’s simply amazing. You will get different effects depending on the size of the nib and the paper.

      I’m going to have to try it! Diamine inks are generally wonderful. Such great colors and always well behaved.

    I love my 823, it’s a great writer (M) nib, so smooth, just a wonderful pen IMO. You made a solid purchase Marc, you only live once, indulge yourself 😉.

      Thanks for the support. This year has been stressful, with way too much work and family obligations. I guess buying fountain pens is my way of self-medicating. :)

    Oh I must try it for drawing. I use it exclusively for writing (I got it on a M nib) but I’m tempted to get the F since so many people rave about it. I’m enjoying my C74 SF so much! Use it for everything. It’s a daily carrier.
    Thanks for the perspective! :)

      You're welcome! I don't know how you manage to exclusively write with a pen. I start to doodle immediately. Someone needs to invent a pen that automatically shuts off (or shocks you) if you start drawing with it. :)

    I agree completely with everything you say about the 823. I use mine to sketch and write. It’s the amber brown with Fine nib, and I have it filled with De Atramentis Document Brown which is waterproof. It is my dedicated brown ink pen and I love it.

    I've watched and rewatched many of your pen reviews, and also your excellent and informative drawing tutorials. So, thank you very much! It's not common for pen reviewers to also be accomplished artists. As an aspiring artist, I really appreciate your opinion.
    You started this video with saying you want to swap the nib of an 823 with the nib from a 743 FA. I also think that is a great idea and I'd like to do that too. But you left us hanging! Did you end up doing that? What are you thoughts on it? Thank you for sharing with all of us. On behalf of the internet, We appreciate you!

      Your kind words are appreciated, Mike! Yes, I finally made the 743/823 nib swap, and it’s awesome, having everything I desire in a pen. That said, I still think it’s a pretty silly, expensive thing to do. :)

      @@mkompan Well, I know all about silly and expensive. I already have an amber 823 with a Fine nib but not only do I want an 823 FA, I want it in the clear body. Even sillier and more expensive! Thanks again.

      I've got my 743 FA now, ready to make the swap on the 823. Next question is, which FNF feed do you recommend, the two slot or the three slot? Thank you for your insights!@@mkompan

    Have you've considered doing a video of the fountain pen inks you use? I know you've done individual reviews of some inks. I'm interested if the ink influences the pen you choose and your technique.

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  Před 3 lety +3

      Interesting question. The ink plays a big part in my pen choice and the way I draw, but as with anything related to art-making, it's hard to summarize. I'll put my thoughts together, and make a video on it in the near future.

    Great review. I also use my fountain pens solely for drawing and I currently own Falcon, Sailor and Pilot Elite. It's a joy to use them as drawing tools and it makes it difficult to to back to other pens and pencils (:. I am now thinking of either getting a Vanishing Point or 823 and seeing someone draw is great! However I realised even on your pen when you go up right, it got stubborn and missed marks. It happened to my Sailor once and got replaced due to bent nib. Is that a consistent thing that happens with that pen? If I am going to go up the budget, I'd expect to make a mark all the time with the right ink. Let me know if it makes you repeating the same lines due to ghosting. Thank you!

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks! The occasional missed strokes are a product of this particular hatching technique, which involves putting down a lot of very fast lines. I occasionally fail to make contact with the paper when working this way, which makes it look like the pen is skipping/missing lines. The nib on the 823 is very reliable, however, so rest assured that it's my my fault, and not the pen's

    This is fascinating! I'm a noob just now exploring dip pens for drawing but the fountain pens also interest me for portability. I haven't bought one yet as I realize a cheap pen may not work very well and become frustrating, but an expensive one isn't where I want to start, either. Can you recommend a beginner's pen and ink? Thank you😀

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  Před 3 lety +2

      You're welcome! There are plenty of inexpensive pens that work really well. Two pens immediately come to mind, the Pilot Metropolitan, and the TWSBI ECO. Here's a video I did a while ago on entry level pens: czcams.com/video/H97H6PJM1L0/video.html
      As for inks, get yourself a bottle a of Noodlers Black. Enjoy! :)

    1. Interesting point about ergonomics affecting style.
    2. It's such a shame that marketplace economics (somehow) dictates Pilot not sell specialty nibs separately.
    3. Have you personally experienced a pen clogged by permanent ink? (I haven't)
    4. I also write almost exclusively with a computer, because it's a much better tool for writing more than a few words.

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  Před 3 lety +2

      Pilot has strange sales strategies, with certain pens not sold in the U.S., or sold with a huge mark-up, some models offered with a large variety of nibs, some with almost none, etc. Perhaps it's a marketing ploy to keep us guessing and confused.
      I have never experienced full clogging with permanent ink, but have had pens experience flow issues (skipping, etc.) when left inked up with permanent ink. Pilots seem to seal very well, however, and I've never had problems with them.
      After a year of teaching online, I'm experiencing computer burnout, and I wanted to disconnect and return to writing on paper. It's been a nice feeling, but my writing muscles have atrophied and my cursive becomes illegible after a few pages. Strange that I can draw for hours, and yet find my hand straining after a half an hour of writing.

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  Před 2 lety +1

      I'm not sure I've ever used the 823 with low ink levels, but I believe that the dual reservoir design eliminates this problem.

    What was wrong with the 149? Just out of curiosity

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  Před 2 lety

      A little flimsy plastic piece connecting the piston and the turning knob broke, so the pen doesn't fill. I don't understand how an $800 pen with so many brass parts and otherwise ridiculous build quality can such a flimsy piston rod.Will cost $100's to fix, so it's going to stay as is for now.

      @@mkompan that's very unfortunate. Montblanc's 149 is pretentious, but it does look nice
