    I remember watching this episode for the first time last year. I was struck by just how differently HIV/AIDS was treated by every character compared to today. The big argument in the courtroom about whether or not it was worth it to hope for a cure or just commit suicide before you had to suffer through AIDS rings so differently than intended now that we know that an era where there are treatments available to keep HIV from progressing to AIDS was in the future but still far enough in the future that many of those affected by it then wouldn't have benefitted.

      @@baileylynnThey end up wanting to drop the charges after being convinced the guy really did want to kill himself, but charge him with 2nd degree murder anyway as a warning to copycats. The prosecutors then leak some stuff to the defense attorney about how they wanted to drop the charges that allows the guy to get off with only a reckless endangerment conviction with a suspended sentence.

      There was another L&O episode (can't recall the season or number) about a Madame (lady pimp) who kicked her girls out if they tested positive for HIV, and refused to have anything to do with them again. No communication, no help, no medical coverage, no money, nothing. And she was facilitating the spread of the virus throughout the 'upper crust' of NYC society via her stable of escorts. _That_ was what pissed off the city.

    Interestingly in the UK mercy killing is illegal. Assisting someone to commit suicide is also technically illegal and carries a 14 year sentence but you need the consent of the AG for a prosecution. This consent is rarely given.

    In this episode, stone was hopelessly naive. Certain hospitals weren't doing anything to help because lots of medical staff refused on religious grounds or fear to do anything to help, or even touch patients with aids or go into their rooms.
    Back then and even now there's this stigma attached to people with legit bad diagnoses that them wanting to die to avoid pain is morally wrong instead of intensely personal.
    Back then there wasn't yet a guarantee with those huge cocktails of pills that someone would survive it, (though the chances were thankfully higher).
    I don't remember what the result of this case was, but if they had showed images of men dying alone in hospitals from aids (even just in makeup for the effect) then that might've been enough to help in court and convince stone

    • @kinggoldark3853
      @kinggoldark3853 Před 2 lety +11

      Stone is a public servant. Taking a position that could even be perceived as being in favor of suicide (notwithstanding how “intensely personal” a segment of mental-health experts perceives it to be) is bad public policy then and bad public policy now.
      L&O did another episode like this where a young woman starved her grandmother after she expressed her wish to die. They still sent the kid away for a couple of years.

      That episode with that girl was very different though, in that all of the evidence began quickly piling up that tarnished her credibility.
      This however was the result of a well known failing of the govt and even those in the medical field, where an ounce of 'Pity' stone said he didn't want to present would've gone far more sympathetically than the disdain or outright dismissal the gay community had suffered during the epidemic.

    I've watched beloved friends and relatives die of cancer. If I'm diagnosed with it I plan to "end the show" before cancer ends it for me. I've seen what victims go through, and it's ugly. All they got from doctors was big promises decorated with "maybe" and "let's try this..."
    I have a choice and my choice will be "No, thanks anyway." The DEA is harassing and prosecuting doctors who prescribe opioids to patients in pain; they've made my decision for me.
