EVERYONE Said 33’s Would Rub On My Lifted Toyota Tacoma!! *BIG MISTAKE*

- In today's video we mount and balance the new wheels and tires!! This is a pretty aggressive set up as you will see, we had some "rubbing" issues at first, but once we got home to evaluate everything, I have zero rubbing and no need for a cab mount chop! I will have a detailed install and before/after measurements so stay tuned for the rest of the build for the Tacoma by subscribing to our channel!
Let's unveil my newly lifted 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road!! You have all seen the previous videos where I show the entire lift kit, wheels and tires. And then the two separate installation videos. First installation video we show how to install upper control arms and struts up front on the Tacoma.
Second installation video we install the add a leaf pack and upgraded rear shocks.
We had a ton of comments from people saying that the +10 offset on my RTX wheels along with the 33 X 12.5 Nitto tires would be way too big! They said rubbing on the fender liners and parts of the cab would be inevitable!
I planned out this lift for a long time and was confident the specs I went with would have perfect fitment. However when at the tire shop getting everything mounted and balanced, when they put the front wheel on, it rubbed on the upper control arm!
So we thought there was an issue and scrambled a bit to figure out the best way to solve the 33in tire rubbing issue.
Turns out the wheel was just placed on the hub and was being held there at an angle which caused it to rub. ;)
After bringing the completed set of RTX wheels and Nitto tires back home, we installed them just as planned and had absolutely no rubbing! We did not need wheel spacers or anything. I think I went with the perfect specs for everything and overall installing this 3in lift kit on my 2017 Toyota Tacoma went very well! I got the exact look I was going for and everyone was wrong when they said I'd have to cut the fenders and do a cab chop! Honestly I was expecting some rubbing, and we were actually shocked I had a good inch of clearance even at full lock.
The lift kit on the Tacoma along with the wheel setup is perfect!

It’s not rubbing now but I think it will once the lift settles a little and if you hit a speedbump or pothole it will hit in my opinion. I may sound stupid but that’s just what I’m guessing based off my experience off my 5 inch lifted 2018 F-150
What you speak is truth. Your gonna lose -25”-.5” of life. Your gonna rub a whole lot in places off-roading in the places you’ve gone stock.
Kenny Zaidner I'll be sure to update if there is any rubbing issues, normal driving it's good, but offroad I need to see if it's close or not.
Yeah, usually if you're going to do any offroad, it's best to put the larger tires on before a lift so it's easier to see where you'll rub and can cut as needed. When you offroad, the suspension will compress even more than with no lift, so you'll rub even more than without any lift. Offset also has a lot to do with it. The more NEGATIVE offset, the more rubbing when close to or at full lock. Positive offset can help avoid rubbing, but you have to be careful not to hit the UCA. High caster can also help, but just a little. This is all unless you have a lift kit with travel limiters. But then people who get travel limiters aren't really into offroading. You want as much travel as possible offroad.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed just as a fair warning I have a 2016 Tacoma as well and had a 3 inch lift and 33s put on and no rubbing at first. but when they compressed the suspension at my off road shop the upper control arm will move out more and hit the tire. it may be a little different for your truck since you have different tires but I just wanted to give you guys a heads up. love the look of the truck. keep up the great work.
Thanks for the tip. When we do our first adventure with this set up we'll watch all that stuff to se what it can do ;)
give your shops some shot outs man. they are nice enough to let you film!
Looks like it should handle the mall lot pretty well
BEHOLD, another mall crawler is born.
I don’t understand the mall crawl reference. Meaning the tires can’t handle off-road? Sorry I’m not hip to the lingo.
I saw a nice Tacoma for sale used. I’m looking at it has skids, nice bumpers, lift, off road tires and I’m thinking damn I should trade mine in for it. I look closer under it and it’s 2wd,lol. I was thinking WTF?! Who does this to a two wheel drive?
@@whatfreedom7 cool story bro
whatfreedom7 prerunner lol
My 2017 Taco is still stock. I want to get 33’s and not have issues. Your setup seems to be PERFECT. Great job.
I have a lift on it lol, you might have rubbing with a stock truck.
I agree wrong size wheels. 16's and 17's look lot nicer on these tacos
I learned that the hard way! Never again
@@isabelavelez4566 then your lift is wrong.....go Icon and 33X 11.5 are perfect fit
I have a 2018 Tacoma with a leveling kit, 3 inch front 2 inch back with Fuel Vapors and 285/75/17s BFGs and no rubbing at all even completely locked out on a turn and looks awesome. It can be done
Awesome! I don't know why some people don't believe it, glad you have no issues either!
This gives me confidence for my 2018 taco... i just bought 285 70 17s and rims with 0++ offset. With my 3 in front and 2 inch back lift i should be fine with no rubbing yeah?
The Niko Experience I think you’ll be totally fine, I have a -12 offset they clearly can be seen sticking out and do not rub when completely locked out on a turn.
The Niko Experience hit up America’s tire, they’ll let you know what can and can’t be done that’s who I went with for rims and tires
Can load a pic of ur taco
What offset did you go on your rims and what exact size are your Nitto's. I have some 285/70/17 coming in with a Fuel D648 with a -12 offset and I have a 3 inch lift front and back. I hope they do not rub. Why don't you like spacers?
The wheels in this video had an 18x9 +10 offset with a 33x12.5 tire. My next set was 17x9 0 offset with a 285/70/17 and didn't have any rubbing until I added the 1.25' spacer. I had the spacers on for awhile until I went up to 34's. Spacers are ok if you do it right and calculate for the offset of the wheels so it's a good setup. With the -12 you have, you may have some slight trimming to do, but it shouldn't be anything crazy. Possibly the CMC maybe, but maybe not!
Why did you get a +10 rim? A 0 or -12 rim would have been better? Research, research, research! @customoffsets would have been very helpful.
Maybe he doesn’t want to ride around looking like EVERYONE else.

Looks absolutely great guys. I know you’re excited to have it

I'm looking to get get a 2019 trd off road. And i want to get it lifted and put all terrain tires on. I don't know much about trucks and would like some suggestions on lift size and tire size. I'm looking to spend around a grand on the lift and about 200-250 bucks on each tire. I want to go off roading in colorado every now and then. I would really appreciate any suggestions
The problem is if you guys do any serious off-roading it's going to rub
JLNProps - yah not too mention he probably didn’t even regear. Which will suck the life out of that truck and it’ll struggle.
@@DMHal01 No issues man..and slight rubbing offroad, but nothing crazy. I didn't even have to do the cmc yet.
Bro you really think these dudes be off roading 🤣
I had the same exact issue on my Canyon. My tires we rubbing on the lift knuckle. The wheels I got were +18 offset. I opted to get the 2” bora wheel spacers. Gave me plenty of room and plenty of stance.
You got the offset of the wheels just right. Great job. I have zero offset on my wheels so I might rub a little.
Rockdaground You might just barely be rubbing, maybe a little more trimming than me, but compared to negative offsets, you're in better shape like me.
I stopped watching after they pulled out a 10mm spacer 😂😂😂
Dirty D and not even hubcentric. Dipshits
Dirty D Had you have watched the video, you'd have seen that they didn't use them at all.
I stopped watching when he had the tires covered in the bed wtf
I stopped watching after I saw it was a short bed
I stopped watching when i realized how gay everyone in this comment thread is 😂
I have a 2006 with 3 inch lift and 33's x 12" and i had to do some trimming up front and cut off a little bit of the chassis support in the front also .
just want to very verify. so the rims are +10 offset. what was the stock offset. +12? also what setting did you use on the spc. u had so much room from body mount?
Yeah these wheels had a +10 offset, the stocks are around +25. My original alignment was set at the stock setting because I didn't know how to adjust them properly. But now I have them adjusted properly and you can see all those settings in this video!! I have 34's now with a 0 offset wheel and 1.25'' spacers with zero rubbing! It's a great setup! czcams.com/video/MJK8c0pBKPs/video.html
Great job Mike. The truck looks awesome. Well done guys :-)
Andrew K. NI Thanks!!
It’ll most likely settle and you’ll need to do something. In all honesty hind-site is 20/20 those rims shoulda had some offset in them. But the rims and tires look sick. But with no offset the truck doesn’t really have any stance.
Nice. Looks awesome! I am getting the same tire tomorrow but 285/75/17 on my Tacoma with SCS Ray10 wheels. I have icon tubular UCAs and they should not rub.
One pothole or speed bump to fast and goodbye wheelwell and your alignment. City truck
Fitment math is a thing and the reason why is explained perfectly above 🤙
Looks great man. Nice work
Looks great! I put 33’s on my Taco earlier this year and had to do some very minor trimming on the back side of the wheel wells. You looked excited once the alignment was done.
Yeah I'm pumped about it! No rubbing at all for normal driving. We'll see about hardcore off road. But worst case I might have some small trimming to do, which is no big deal. My 07 Tacoma rubbed a lot at full lock on flat ground with smaller tires. 3rd gen is set up great for this.
I have a 3rd gen Tacoma myself with a 3.5 inch lift and 33s, I still rub when go up steep driveways or when I’m turning on a bumpy road (rocking side to side)
I don’t have a CMC yet
No issues with UCA’s
What are the specs of the wheels you are running?
wrong wheels, u got mall crawling wheels
Yup.
Shoulda done 17”
Precisely.
Lol
Should of got some wheels with more backspacing. Send wheels back.
When the front suspension compress the wheel might rub. You should be careful im not being negative just would not want your stuff to get damaged.
Coldhammerforged I'm gonna check it out soon off the pavement and see how it looks, thanks!
@@BrosFOURRSpeed also when changing to bigger wheels and tires you might also want look in to a different diff ratios. As to not damage your current diff.
Coldhammerforged I'll have to look into re gearing and see if that's beneficial.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed Maxx Powell did a rear gear and video on it that might help you.
Thomas Carpenter Ill have to check that out, thanks.
Just bought 2019 Trd off road and put a 3 inch lift with 33s. Had to put spacers on. Because on tight turns tires will rub.
It will rub on the control arm I had one with a little more room than that and if I took a sharp corner that had a small pitch and it rubbed like crazy almost made me wreck
Oh wow. I'll be doing some tests to find out what spots rub. But so far daily driving I've had no issues.
I literally just bought 33s and the same lift last night. I saw this thumbnail and almost died. So glad it all worked out!!!! 😅
Oh dang lol. Yeah we were scrambling for a bit when they test fit the wheels, but it helps to test fit wheels using the lug nuts to hold them straight lol
You will be fine going down the road and turning unless there’s a bump or off camber turn. But you can always fix that with a heat gun and work the wheel well liners up front. If you’re doing a lot of off roaming they make cab mount cut kits for the backside of the front wheel wells.
I'll have to look into the CMC once I go off road and see if its needed, probably have to do it.
Where did you get that grill? Sick!
That was from BP Fabricating! Not sure they still carry it, but have some options!
Great Job. The Truck looks sick...
Daniel Gonzalez Thanks!
Loveeeee the look, makes the Taco meaner with the beefy tires! I do worry though that they still may rub some with travel,I hope they don't!
Thanks, yea I love the look now! Off road rubbing could be an issue, so we'll just have to see!
@@BrosFOURRSpeed Looking forward to it!!! Can't wait to see more vids!
GsxrGrl21 Thanks!
Icon upper arm with delta joints
looks good. a little close for my liking , why did you cover up tires with a tarp?
It was pouring rain and I didn't want water inside the tire after the wheel was put on them, so I wanted it to be bone dry.
Hey how did you get that black trim along the doors? I would like to get that done on my Tacoma as well. Thanks!
Sweet truck Bro!
thanks!
I have a 4 inch lift on my Tacoma with 33s and they only rub on turns with big bumps.
Nice! I didn't have much rubbing at all expect for in reverse turned all the way and some spots on the dirt! I want to go a step up soon and do the cmc and some trimming now!
Stock will out perform that mall set up
Your truck looks so much more aggressive. Good job! But like others have said just wait until the lift settles a bit and double check. It may not rub now but off roading will definitely push them around bit. Any off-roading shop should be able to do a Cab Mount Chop(CMC) for you if you do end up rubbing. I can’t wait to see what else you have planned!
Yea I'm going to take it off road soon to see how it performs, I might have to take a the corner off the CMC just a bit, we'll see!
What sensors did you go with? any issues with them, reprogramming them?
This was so long ago I can't remember, but just generic sensors and with the programming, it took like 10 miles or something like that to sync up! I didn't have any issues with them!
What lift kit did you get for the Tacoma?
It's an OME kit! Here's all the components I went with! Best lift I've ever had! czcams.com/video/dcMd5BOT1pQ/video.html
Should’ve gotten more offset on the wheels, I wouldn’t go back to stock uppers
NO WAY would I drive that with that tiny bit of space near the wheel.
The truck looks really nice, but I'm afraid that over time something is going to happen and you're going to pop a tire and lose quite a bit overall. Putting in a spacer isn't going to kill the look, just maybe make it safer in the long run. That's only my opinion.
That's a good point, I still have some adjustments that I can make, but right now it doesn't touch at all so I'll keep an eye to see what works best.
it's never going to touch. 1 cm might as well be 1 mile
smitty4699 That's a good point too. I'll make a video off the pavement to show what it's like.
@@smitty4699 You really think so.. Well, you have more faith in this then I do. Haha I'm finding this a learning lesson and very interesting.
Agreed!
When you force something that isn’t setup properly, you break shit. It’s just a matter of time.
Cover tires with a tarp so they don't get wet? Then drives in the rain
We put a tarp over them to transport them to the shop so the insides wouldn't get all wet before mounting. Easier to do this then have to wipe them all dry at the shop. You always want as little moisture inside tires as possible to prolong TPMS and valve stem.
If you take a tight turn at some speed. (Mountain driving) the body roll will cause the tire to snag the uca. Highly recommend a small spacer. Your set up looks exactly like my first one and I had the same problem. Overall looks great!
Turner Suhler interesting. I’ll do some test to see if I run into that. I have almost 1/2 inch of clearance to the UCA, so I’ll see if it still clears
Nice truck I like it, but i would have put the wheel spacer just for future purposes when the lift settles and it won’t hurt to put just a 10mm spacer on it
my tacoma with 2.5 inch level in the front stock rear barely rubs with 33.6 in tires. Next time buy some rims with negative offset
It would have been MUCH convenient if you talked about the wheel SPECS. Did you even considered the offset (ET)?
I had to get spacers for my rims 3 1/2 " front and back so it looked proper on the truck. "NOTE" Always check when you order a lift what the recommended back spacing for the rims are. The back spacers do work. I never had a problem with them on my truck.
It looks bad ass brother, great work!!!
Thanks!
Looks good,I'm 58 love my Toyotas, I have 96 tacoma, I'm just not into lift or going to any other wheel other than Factory!! But don't get me wrong, looks good got (4) yrs. going retire going get new Tacoma then anyway buddy I'm happy for u !!

@@BrosFOURRSpeed thank you!
Your welcome!!
I see popped front tires in your future, its gonna hit the UCA when you go offroad.
This setup never hit off roading. And I did a ton of adventures with it
So you installed 1.5" spacers in the front with the new tires?
My bad, didn't see you were changing the wheels to a different offset.
When you go with taller tires, do you need to do anything to adjust speedometer and odometer or is it not enough difference to be of any signifigance?
I have 33's on my Tacoma with a 2" level kits and its doesn't rub when driving normally but its does rub when coming up my drive way at an angle just not as bad that you need to shave any fender off. My wheel is 20x9 with a offset of 1.
Did you do the CMC? I'm probably going to have to cut the corner of it off at some point, need to see first.
It’s not bad to a point where you have to do an CMC, you can use a heat gun and bend all them fender liner in. If you plan to go off road, I recommend investing in another set of wheel mainly for off road. This set up would not work. Good Lucky with the rest of your build and do what you love.
what about when u hit a bump thats to close for comfort
No issues! This was a perfect setup with minimal rubbing! I now have 34's on the truck and since this video, did the CMC and with my adjustable upper control arms, pushed the tires .5'' forward for even more clearance!
I'm diggin it! Can't wait to lift mine!
You'll love it! Can't wait to test it off road!
Looks good!
Thanks! This was a good setup. I now have full 34in tires and have changed up quite a bit on the truck

Congrats ! I like the tacos myself but stuck between that and the new tundra .but I still have to try to kill my gen 1 Ridgeline
@@omarcaban9917 Oh cool. For me, I dont need the space or towing capabilities of a Tundra. And the off road trails I do are tight enough for the Tacoma. Tundra would never fit through the woods. So depends on what you need it for.

Cool thanks for heads up 👍,
so here is the thing, it looks really good, you might rub when you turn and there is a bump or even a little bit, it rubs in the inner side I know because I have a icon stage 4 and even is a great suspension it does rub sometimes and I have 3 in lift up front, other than that you would love the capabilities of your truck now is lifted it was about time, have fun
dimitri vaqueros Yeh so far normal driving there’s no rubbing. We’ll do some test off road to see what will need to be done as far as trimming
When the suspension flexes? Mine rub over large bumps.
you have wrong suspension then..lol...you went cheap way out of a lift then
I only click on ur videos to read the comments 😂😂😂
What year is your taco???? I'm looking for fender flares for my 2020 double cab. If anyone in the comments can help me out it would greatly appreciate it . Also just stumbled upon your channel, great content. Keep it up
2017. I have flares coming next week! Video will come after that!
Look forward to the before and after measurements and photos.
The Tacoma looks like a new truck, looks way better lifted and with bigger tires! I also prefer black wheels. I recommend getting hub centric spacers just in case. I have those on my Tacoma and they’re safe because the wheels rest on the hub of the spacers rather than the lug nut screws
TheFokusing Thanks I love the look! If I do end up needing spacers I’ll definitely do hub centric 👍🏼
Congratulations.. Truck looks amazing.. Let me ask you, did you have to calibrate the new wheel sensors to the computer? how did that work? Enjoy the new look.. Cheers!!
I will be doing that this weekend actually since we didn't get the tires on at the shop, so I'll show how that works.
Definitely need cmc specially if you go wheeling
I'll take it off road soon to see how it performs, but a small corner of it might have to come off, we'll see.
Its one thing to test for rub on a flat garage floor. But you will still have to do some trimming to prevent rubbing on uneven ground. You can get away with however little space you have at the control arm. But do not get rid of them or alignment will be nearly impossible. You can use the camber adjustment in the control arms to make more space between the tire and the UCA at the alignment shop.
If you plan to use a spacer, get hub centric spacers, also consider longer wheels studs because the Toyota has short studs and you cant achieve proper thread engagement in the lug nuts.
Truck looks great though. 22x12s would have been cooler 😏
This was actually almost a perfect setup. Only aggressive off road with the wheels fully turned, it would barely hit the cab mount. But not enough to need any trimming.
What is the height at the top of the roof after the lift and 33’s
I haven't measured that ever lol, I'm 5'10, so I'd say somewhere around 6'3 or so.
My 2018 Tacoma shifts a lot with stock wheels and tires. How much worse is it with 33’s?
Should of used Hub spacers nothing wrong with them i use them and have been pretty rock solid
Anybody know the biggest tire that will will fit on my 3rd gen without a lift and without rubbing?
I actually made a video on that! czcams.com/video/Y_0Qmb5yfs0/video.html
looks sick
Thanks!
So what happens when you air down?
Nothing!! Still no rubbing! That doesn’t make a difference! Here’s a vid on that! czcams.com/video/XhqO9_Yod9Y/video.html
When you cycle the suspension with the wheels turned, you'll likely rub, particularly in reverse.
surunner455 So far on flat ground it doesn’t. But I’m going to test it off road at different angles to see where it starts rubbing
I have a video of my old tundra truck in quicksand color. I lugged around the steel bumpers and heavy rims for a while until I traded it in for a tacoma inferno way better in maneuvering although I do miss the power of the tundra went from 12mpg to 21mpg
Would it rub if you were to air-down?
Nope, airing down doesn't affect that at all, the rubbing depends on the offset of the wheel and how wide the tire is.
What about when you’re off-roading and the suspension flexes and brings the wheels closer into the arch
I have to test that and see, I'm know there will be some minor trimming.
What size wheel, tire, and lift? I literally bought my new tacoma Friday. I need a few good ideas in which direction to go
Another great what not to do to your taco video. Thanks for showing us what unsafe looks like
Couldn't you cut part of the fender or would that void the warranty ( assuming you have one)
No need to cut the fenders with no rubbing, and that would not avoid my warranty.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed i guess i meant inner wheel well but thanks for responding
I am confused now. Did you put the new tires without making other changes to the vehicle 0r not. You have other video where you made other changes.
I didn't have to do anything but put the wheel on..no spacers or cutting or anything like that.
Should use 1 inch wheel spacers in the truck would’ve driven a lot better
1” or 1.25”, not a huge difference.
Used 1.25” on my 3rd gen and zero issues.
Looks proper now but you will most likely rub once you take it wheeling and you get that suspension flexing. same issue i had with mine but i dont wheel enough to have to worry about the rub. for driving down the road it will be perfect though.
I'm glad normal driving it's not even close. I'm sure I'll have some minor trimming to do once off road. But even with smaller tires on my 07, that rubbed a lot with a 3in lift. So this having no rubbing at all on flat ground is great!
Milwaukee 1/2” impact kit and some flip sockets would help you a lot
What size of wheels are they ?
These are 18x9 with a +10 offset! It was a cool wheel, but I've switched out since then!
Should have asked for a caster as close to 3 if not more and camber of 0. They basically gave you a a stock Toyota spec alignment....
One thing about SPCs I don’t like. Most shops don’t know how to align them vs other aftermarket UCAs.
Oliver Galon Yea that's the one thing I wasn't too sure about, I'll have to ask around and see how much of a difference that would make.
Bros FOURR Speed start by CMC and pinch weld if you plan to hit the dirt again like your past videos. Otherwise pavement driving is fine with just small trimming and plastic.
Oliver Galon Yea ill have to see what's needed for offroad!
He’s right ^ the specs you want are
0 camber
0 toe and
3 to 4+ caster.
This will all help you clear the cab mount and give you better high speed turn in/handling
singletrackftw Thanks, I'll have to see when I can do that.
I did the same to my Tacoma, i have the exact stock rims/tires with 100 miles on them, nobody made me a reasonable offer, i still have them.
I sold mine for 700 a couple weeks ago. Not sure what you consider reasonable though
What does it ride like on them tires?
Just like stock! Such a smooth ride, no road noise, it's been a great tire for daily driving and going off the pavement! I'm on my second set now and would definitely recommend them.
looks like you need longer steering knuckles. the UCA is too close to the tires. all in all the truck looks great.. you could use your stock wheel and put aggressive looking tires and still look rugged.

Looks fantastic man, can’t wait to see the difference off roading with all you’ve done
Robert Morrison Thanks! Yea I can't wait to test it out!
Do you think tires the same size but a little less aggressive would have a better fitment
I could have gone slightly smaller on the tire, not as wide would have given more room obviously, but I'll be able to make these ones work! It would have been a lot more work to fit them if I had a negative offset on the wheel too, so that definitely helped.
Is it too close for off road? I'd like to do this lift but I well be doing a lot of off road driving.
I have a few videos with this setup on the trails! czcams.com/video/UtqegDRsizE/video.html. It is close and there was the slightest rubbing on hard turns Offroad, but it was the largest setup I could do without trimming. I have changed my setup though and have a different offset and a little bit smaller tire, so it is possible to get a setup and not do any trimming. czcams.com/video/ycG30le4WP0/video.html
