Thank you Ms. Van Norden, While I am a retired man from the midwest, I wanted to understand what it is that I am seeing now that I can travel. Your videos have been a real source of value in explaining what it is I am viewing. Your video on the Bowen's reaction series was especially helpful in understanding the process of igneous rocks and that of granite especially. This is just a note of gratitude and thanks for helping to enrich my and my wife's lives even further in understanding what it is we are standing on. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Very well done. I develop curriculum and think you hit the middle school level exactly. Good narration and content. I will use it in an online Earth science course for a virtual high school. Thanks!

Understanding rock erosion rates leads me to doubt rocks exposed to the elements could survive millions of years of weathering without disintegrating. The set of tiny footprints shown in one of the slides gives a greater argument that the rocks in the grand canyon were formed recently, perhaps thousands of years ago, rather than millions.

You are correct in saying that rock layers exposed at the surface would erode away in only hundreds or thousands of years. Those tiny footprints, found on the Coconino Sandstone were deposited on a sand dune 260 million years ago. The sand was buried, became sandstone, covered with mud from a shallow sea to become the shale of Toroweap Formation, and then with limey sediment from a tropical sea, to become the limestone Kaibab formation. The layers were uplifted into the Colorado Plateau 5-6 million years ago, and have been eroding away ever since. Those footprints are only visible to us today because all of the upper layers eroded away. To suppose that the sequence of events that led to those very different layers of the Grand Canyon could have happened in thousands instead of millions of years would require ignoring all that we know about rates of deposition, lithification, uplift and erosion. Also, the marine fossils in the Toroweap and Kaibab formations, as well as in the formations below give us radiometric ages consistent with the geologic story.

Keep your faith , it's separate from science , Jesus walked on water ...too bad if we had foot prints , we could bracket his height and weight , tell he was right handed or not , discern jogging or strolling , oh and if he stubed his toe on a rock , good spot to gather dna for some real fun science...see , test , build your comedy pyrimid . The earth is 4.567 billion years old. Adjust your calenders accordingly...

Geologists only talk and think in millions of years. They have different methods for determining the age of rock layers. However, there is one small problem. Ancient books tell us that a cycle of natural disasters threatens the earth and all living things. The cause of this cycle of disasters is a ninth planet in our solar system orbiting the sun in an eccentric orbit. Features of the natural disaster include a massive tidal wave, higher than the highest mountain, flooding, storms, rain, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and a fiery asteroid bombardment. That planet is surrounded by a gigantic twisting cloud of dust and meteorites. That cloud obscures the atmosphere, pollutes the water and covers the whole planet Earth with that dust. At the end of the crossing of this planet 9, the earth is covered with a horizontal layer of wet mud, a mixture of sand, clay, lime, fossils of sea and land animals, shells and the deposit of that dust cloud and asteroids. So every layer on our planet contains material with the same antiquity, perhaps many millions of years old: the deposit of extraterrestrial clay. If you don't know about this cycle, you have no idea how our history has evolved. To learn much more about planet 9, the recurring flood cycle and its timeline, the re-creation of civilizations and ancient high technology, read the e-book: "Planet 9 = Nibiru". It can be read on any computer, tablet or smartphone. Search: invisible nibiru 9

Looks like the tectonic forces occurred all at the same time for all the layers to be tilted without erosion between the layers.
I used to believe in millions of years, until recently I discovered all of the geologic anomalies can be explained much better with a single catastrophic global flood.
Google images for folded mountains and tell me how to fold do those layers unless they were all still soft at the same time as the plate tectonics occurred during the global flood of Noah
    Makes sense.
Possibly Jesus could be who he said he was.

All geologists would disagree with the statement that all geologic anomalies can be explained with a single flood. We do see evidence of floods in the rock record, and comparing the deposition of rocks from today's floods with the rock record, allows us to recognize past flood deposits. I don't doubt that someday we will be able to find evidence from the flood mentioned in the Bible.
However, the rock record would look very different if there was one global flood and only thousands of years in which to deposit the rock record.
Old rock layers that have been buried and exposed to pressure can, because of the confining pressure and the increased temperature bend in a plastic (ductile) manner.
If you want to understand geologic processes, it is necessary to understand that the Earth must be very old (deep time). Don't worry, most Christians have no difficulty reconciling their faith with the well documented scientific understanding of a 4.5 billion year old Earth.
