NXRevolution Yea, the main problem with the Wii U reveal was that it only focused on the controller and combined with the name caused several people to assume that the Wii U was an add on for the original Wii. This reveal made it clear that the Switch was a new console meshing it was nothing like the Wii U reveal.
But the Comment about Melee HD aged perfectly.
Max wasn't exactly wrong.
It might as well have been the Wii U all over again given the way Nintendo have pretty much rehashed all of the Wii U's best games for the Switch.

Exactly!! And it was more like a teaser! People have unrealistic and skewed expectations! Finally the first console to satisfy both Home console and handheld gamers. I believe they showed just a snippet of the new Mario game which looks a lot like Mario 64 and Super Mario 3D world.
I don't think it will satisfy the home console market, just the portable market. The main gimmick seems to be you can show your new 3ds 2.0 on the tv screen if you want.
Except, you know, there's no 3d, and only one screen, and you can play ports/upgraded versions of Wiiu games.
My point was that the switch seems to be just the next iteration of the 3DS. It's a handheld first, and a home console second. The "gimmick" is that you can display your game onto the tv which isn't revolutionary. Phones can already do this.
Dale Stoddard If you read more about Nintendo and where it has been these last couple of consoles, the move to the Nintendo Switch makes a lot of sense. Nintendo wants to unify both it is western and eastern markets to one console. It is already too late to directly compete with the PS4 and Xbone since those consoles already have a huge library of games already. It can't release another handheld like they done, since the mobile market has boomed. So they need to combine the two. It is also a way to accommodate everyone. Some people will really one get use out of one of the features. No console or device to date has been able to play console games on BOTH at home and the go on one device. This isn't a simple streaming device. Phones aren't dedicated gaming machines. Phones do not have close to the power of this machine. This isn't the next iteration of the 3DS or the Wii U. It is something in between and is essentially bridging the gap between home console and handheld gaming. If you aren't a handheld gamer, that is fine. It probably won't appeal to you. But if you like handheld gaming or both, this is a pretty huge deal. Please read more into The Switch.

Omnis So you say. My school has a video game club on Thursdays that holds Smash 4 and Melee tournaments almost every time. They also hold Overwatch or Call of Duty tournaments at least once or twice a month.

The Gamepad's and original 3ds XL did not have the best battery. The pro controllers battery is fantastic though.
Tbf the wii u gamepad only works a set distance from the console and doesn't like brick walls apparently so battery life isn't so much of a concern as it's not a stand alone console like the switch I think we'll be pleasantly surprised
I'll mainly be playing at home so it just has to last long enough for bathroom use :)

This time around the gimmick seems useful. But I am crossing my fingers for 1080p at a stable 30/60 FPS...along with a robust Nintendo network service (store, library and social).
And I hope the storage space is at least 1TB and we can use SD cards to add more space since I like going digital on portable devices. The good sign that I see for the switch so far is it will have more 3rd party support.

Not sure if storage is going to be great given its portable nature. I would be more than satisfied with 500gb for my virtual console titles. As for a Skype application...not even Xbox gives that much attention to it. I was thinking more along the lines of Steam.
Considering that 1TB sd cards are a thing storage is not really an issue since HDDs are getting slimmer and more portable friendly.

Ehhh. They just came out with a smash bros game less than two years ago. Nintendo did the right thing by not flooding the market with slightly different versions of the same game. I get that Max likes fighting games but a new Smash was unlikely.

For me, I like having fluid movement in video games. Melee gives me that with wavedashing etc. Smash 4 doesn't give you that same mobility. Not saying Melee is objectively better but that's my reason for preference. I still play and enjoy Smash 4, its meta has vastly improved from its first release, which was when everything was slow and boring. Now it's actually fun to watch.
That being said, whether you play Melee or Smash 4, arguing that one is better than the other makes you part of the reason the online Smash community is still shitty

Unlikely. They've recently embraced competitive Melee considerably more - also wave dashing wasn't an "exploit" it was just a by-product of the game engine. Not to mention that many of the other advanced techniques such as L-cancelling, dash dancing, short hopping and all were entirely intended - and were in fact in Smash 64.

What on earth happened to your brain sir. All exploits are a product of a games engine.
Lots of medication is what happened to my brain - when I think exploit I think "completely unintended glitch" such as being able to move between "multiverses" in mario 64. Something that QA testing probably wouldn't have seen coming. Wavedashing is literally just air dodging into the ground right after you jump... It's not hard, it's not complex, and it's something that I highly doubt they didn't know about.
Wavedashing would not be removed. This is due to the fact that it uses melee's directional air dodge system and they would have to take that out completely which would effect the game play in general.
Can't wait for the Switch to be released.

I love how people tried to be cool when the trailer first released by bashing nintendo, bringing up negitives, and saying it wasnt that cool until they heard everybody was hyped for it and then they changed their minds.
I'm hyped to see this. They're doing something for both the eastern and western markets. Eastern markets are all about portability, while the western markets is all about home console and power. Due to the fact that this can make Skyrim look great, that hub that you plug the screen into may have the power to scale the graphics and functionality. Nintendo probably wasn't bluffing this time, and this may push Nintendo back into the console race.
Now we just have to see the specs.

Poverty God putting any competitive fighting game that people love watching and playing on console will make that console sell. Melee and other fighting games are what makes companies get dough. Capcom gets big dough for supporting street fighter tournies. Melee is one of the most watched fighting games as of right now. Nintendo would get pretty big bucks if they were supporting the tournies and showing love. But no, they won't even support sm4sh. IMO big waste of money and opportunity from nintendo.

Okay here's where you're wrong. Melee at the moment is only playable on a CRT TV. I don't know the specifics, but something about using an LCD makes the inputs lag to the point of unplayablility. We want a remastered version optimized for LCD TV's so it's more accessible for the common household.

One thing i think Max missed is that the 2 modules that make the portable controller can be used separated as 2 different controlers, as we saw a few times (look again at the girl playing the mario game with her friends). THAT looks cool.
This is an amazing controller! It's a regular controller that can switch into the Wii-mote and Nunchuck, or the wii-pad controller. Plus it's extremely portable, well, the WiiU was portable with 1 player games because most games can be played on the tiny screen.

If it has solid build quality and 5+ hour battery life they have a winner. After the first few months and a couple hundred "Switches" is it still going to have that satisfying click? Will the controller add-ons to the tablet still feel sturdy? I hope so.
If it's 3DS compatible these things will fly off the shelves. I just want to play Pokemon Sun & Moon on it in all honestly. The Zelda game looks cool too.
Now, who really wants to play 2K or any multiplayer game for that matter on a screen that small... Not sure if they're trying to appeal to Smurfs or what but they could have kept that.

What I hated was taking the Wii U anywhere. If I wanted to bring it to a friends house, I needed to pack the Wii U, the game pad, the hard drive, the power adapter for both, the pro controller, the Wii motes, the sensor bar, the game discs, it was a friggin nightmare.
The Switch almost seems to solve most of that. My question might be....if I wanna take this console to a friends house and hook it up to their TV, would I have to bring the hub as well as the controller?

The console version has usb ports, could easily make fight sticks for that system just like they do with PS4 and Xbox One. Also with the handheld aspect you get around with the problem Pokken had with local play on the Wii U.

People. You need to understand that this is NOT a "Wii U but better". This, The Switch, is a REGULAR console, that can be taken on the go. No gimmicks like motion controls, no using the "handheld" as a secondary screen etc. This is purely going to be intended to be used as either a console or handheld, or in other terms a portable console. This doesn't hurt it or the games, because you can simply IGNORE taking it on the go, or using it on a TV, and hell if you want to do both great, because that's exactly what this can do. You will get your same standard Playstation/Xbox experience, but with an option to take it on the go if you WANT TO.

It's not really a console. It's going to be more like a successor to the 3DS that you can plug into your TV. It's not big enough to house the hardware necessary to compete with the PS4 Plus/Xbox Scorpio. Not even with the Pascal architecture SoC that it's going to be using. It won't even be on par with the current PS4/XB1.
And those flimsy, uncomfortable little slide on/off 'controllers' for the sake of multiplayer are exactly what I would call a gimmick. No one wants to split screen multiplayer on a screen that size. Not kids who would rather have their own 3DS's, and certainly not adults at social gatherings, which made up a pretty laughable portion of the announcement trailer.
It's a successor to Wii U, and you gotta admit that this is closer to a console than a handheld (I mean, you can play freaking Zelda, 3D Mario and Skyrim on it). And the difference between the Joycon controllers "gimmick" and what we've had before on Nintendo consoles, is that this is completely optional whether you want to use it, or the Pro controller which is just a regular ass controller. The Wii U often forced you to use the Wii U gamepad in games, but on the Switch here you can presumably play EVERYTHING with the Pro controller too, if you want.
It's like if a regular console and a tablet had sex.
***** Successor, sure. There is no arguing that Nintendo intends for the NX to succeed the Wii U. But, Console? No, it's not a console.
When the very core of the device in question is a *mobile* gaming unit, right down to the *SOC processor* that powers it, and the only thing that gives anyone any reason *at all* to compare it to consoles is it's ability to connect it to the TV with an HDMI cord, it's not a console. *It's a handheld.*
The game lineup does not dictate whether the NX is more console or handheld. There has been a Zelda game on every version of Nintendo handhelds to date. There is even a 3D Mario 64 game on the DS. And Skyrim is a 5 year old game that just got a *minor* face lift for re-release. It's not a graphically demanding game by today's standards at all. It's graphics are still far, far below actual current gen titles like Witcher 3.
If there was anything most appropriate to compare the NX to, it would be the *Nvidia Shield*.

Soulr B I wouldn't even compare it to a wiiu. The biggest downfall of the wiiu was you had to (for the most part) use two screens at once. With this device you'll only ever be using one screen.

I kinda have mixed feelings about this. It looks really cool, innovative and definitely unique, but it raises some questions for me. How bad is the battery life going to be? Will it be able to keep up with the newer consoles in terms of processing and graphics power? I think it'll be worth keeping up with for right now.
Same here wondering that too... had hoped NX was a true home console with some nice power the thing has Tegra in it maybe the docking station also one and when docked it has abit more to make 1080p 60 fps possible.
Rogerio N I also noticed two USB ports on the side of the docking station. I wonder if those could be used for GPU/CPU expansions similar to Alienware's system?
It'll probably have similar battery life to the 3DS, which was fine.
Critical Mass The 3DS' battery life was okay, but one of the best ones I've ever played was definitely the Vita Slim's battery. If they could find a way to get something that lasts as long as the Vita's battery in that thing I would be so thrilled.
Also, how stable is the handle, will it just slide off and drop the screen over time?

well it was a preview, I'm curious about the specs thought, will the dock double the power of the handheld when it's plug? will it be a touchscreen with apps? can't wait for they reveal the games as well.
As Max pointed out, Battery life is the one thing I'm concerned about with this. Cause you need a battery for the system, and each little controller bit probably needs some kind of battery life too, yeah? But if you can take this thing on a plane with you and it'll last an entire long distance flight, that'll be pretty epic. It's gonna be interesting to see.
Also supposedly there's going to be a Nintendo Direct tomorrow? At least, that's the rumor I heard. So if there is Melee HD or Smash 4 v2 or Smash 5 or whatever, we would probably see it then.

Cartridges? Well they can hold many times the data of a blu-ray disk. No load times. And they're compact as well as not easily damaged. Did you see when they switched from console to handheld? It was instantaneous! First the NES mini.. Now the Nintendo switch.. Well played Nintendo.. Well played
I think it won't let you play the home console with the screen in the controller like the Wii U, but I'm not sure. I want to know how game patches work with cartridges.
