The one quality that Federer had above and beyond any player (past or present) was GRACE. Nadal hustles with frenetic energy and bustling athleticism, Novak has the complete game with little to no weaknesses, but Roger played with an effortless élan, a grace and fluidity that almost made him seem a ballet dancer. He made impossible shots with an artistry that defied and transcended the limitations the rest of us burden under. I think that's why it was so exhilarating to watch him play: he made the improbable rote, and the impossible seem easy, giving all of us a glimpse into how it would feel to truly fly.

Just incredible. Anyone who has even attempted to play tennis knows how hard tennis is to master and this guy's talent is just miles above everyone. If had one-tenth his talent, I would be in the tour today. I will never forget this man. He is a true joy to watch and I consider myself so lucky that I witness every moment of his glorious career. I just feel sad that young children will never witness your talent. Unfortunately all great things must come to an end. I hope to see you in exhibitions with your friend Andy Roddick again. Thank you for everything. May retirement bring you as much happiness as you given all your fans.

Being the greatest was never about only titles, you see it in Football or Basketball, the two greatest of both sports aren't the ones with the most titles, the same happens with tennis, there will never be a player like Roger, even his rivals knows he's the greatest of all time!

Alcaraz is highly influenced by Federer and is a gift to tennis. But seeing Federer again - and most of these clips are Federer past his prime - there's just no one who moves like him, where you could freeze frame it at any moment and have a photo to put on your wall. So smooth.

One of the underrated parts of RF’s career is that the majority of it took place in the Hi-Def era. We will get to keep seeing these types of video

Unfortunately a lot of youtube videos from his prime are not good quality, although the master footage would certainly be in high def. Big screen HDTVs were all the rage back then, it was definitely not blurry. I hope there's a project at some point to put out those matches in high def. The Federer/Agassi US Open '05 final is one of the rare gems that we have in great quality, 60 fps.

My favourite athlete :(( the day has come, been through the ups and downs, I’ll never forget how he won the AO in 17, Wimbledon in 17 & AO again in 18. Proved everyone wrong & helped inspired a martial artists like myself. I’m now 23 years old but tennis was the first sport I loved growing up! Thank you for everything! All aboard the fedexpress!
I have seen many styles when it comes to tennis, the aggressive baseliner, the counterpuncher, the all-court player, the serve-and-volleyer, the pusher, etc. But the style that better describes Roger is Pure Skill and Elegance

There's no such thing as a GOAT, because eras can't be comparable fairly. Not even Novak and Roger can be compared fairly due to the age gap between them.
Roger's tennis belonged to the 90's and he brought that into each decade he played. He adapted his game to every standard and development of the modern times without sacrificing his essence. He had no business playing (let alone winning) against people much younger than him while he was out of his prime or above 30yo. Every player from his generation retired at 28-32.
That alone is worthly enough of any praise he gets. On top of that, Roger got everything to show for. He had the technique, the aesthetics and the numbers to prove his status.
He may have lost the biggest records now, thanks to the absence of new players rising to the task, but he won our hearts forever.

Man started in the late 90s and dominated the early 2000s upto the 2008 wimbledon final and then from their still managed to prolong his career upto 2019 or 21 I'd say competing and winning slams against Novak and rafa in their dominant period from the 2010s to 2020s!
And plus the way his tennis is played, the calmness, shot selection, just pure art ❤️
Man debuted when i was born in 98 and now I'm 24 and for 24 years there's no comparison as to who elevated and entire sport to another level than what it was!

I hope we'll see some good stuff at Laver Cup. I hope he can still play high level at 70-80% movement, he just can't run at 100% for consecutive matches in a full season anymore. Also the way his letter was worded, it feels like he'll still keep in shape and do a lot of exhibition charity matches, and he can still hit crazy shots in those for the next few decades. He was careful to say that he's only saying goodbye to the ATP pro tour and the 4 Grand Slams, not to tennis itself - he'll always be a tennis player.

The untouchable GENIUS of tennis. The sport has never seen anyone like him. I doubt it ever will again. For his genius alone, l rank him alone at the very top of the sport. Genius isn't moderated by numbers. It's in a league of its own. The most beautiful of tennis players who could easily have been an equally great ballet dancer.
Why I picked up a tennis racket was because of RF, why I continued to play was so I could play RF one day, only played with a Wilson because of RF, hit countless tennis balls because of RF. They’ll be no one like Federer. His impact on the game and his flair that comes with class, simply a legend on its own. I don’t see myself going back watching videos from his main competitors once they have retired. Can’t get enough of watching Federer though. I believe as humans we always long for beauty as it elates the soul and evokes emotions. This is what I experience watching this. Pure joy.

One of the reasons Roger will always be loved is his truly unbelievable hand-eye coordination and his reflexes. He would do things instinctively with a flick of his wrist and it's just not human.

I went out and played tennis today for the first time in a couple years. After I was finished, I came home and watched this video and had a fresh appreciation for what this great man was able to do. Tennis is all about timing - Federer wasn't just a great tennis player - he had a 6th sense and razor sharp perception.
OK...maybe not the GOAT in terms of playing career (Djokovic IMO, although he's my least favorite of the Big 3), but if you consider his impact to the game, his legacy, what he brought and what he means to the sport, there is no other like him. Greatest ambassador of tennis and arguably the greatest of any sport, most beloved wordwide, most admired/respected/imitated by his peers. He brought class, elegance, and excitement to the court all over the world.
And while his overall playing career doesn't match Djokovic, I'd argue that Fed had the best ~10 year period. He had a 40 slam period, starting 2003 until 2013, in which he accomplished:
- 17 GS titles, 24 finals, 33 semifinals, 38 QF (again, this is out of 40!)
- 10 consecutive finals
- 23 consecutive semifinals
- 36 consecutive QF
This level of consistency is absolutely amazing.

I don't think any athlete will ever amaze me like prime Federer did from 2004 to 2007. Watching him live back then it felt like he was doing something as well as a human can possibly do something. Incomparable.

Hearing Robbie Koenig wax poetic when Roger would produce a magical shot. In all my years of watching tennis, this will always be one of my favorite things.
One of the reasons why he is the GOAT is because all these years it was the other two legends who were trying to catch up to him, and neither of them did it until 2020. They surpassed him only after he stopped competing.
give me a break fanboy they catching up to him only coz he was 5-6 years older than them while they had each others to compete against unlike Federer who had nobody legit to compete against him during the weak era of 2003-2007 bar a prodigy youngster Nadal on Clay at the end of it and if Nadal didn't had prime Djokovic & tons of injuries to stop him for more than a decade now he would've surpassed Federer at everything many years ago already.
The competition definitely dipped as Djokovic in particular racked up Slams. If there ever was a weak era, it was the last several years, but it's looking better now with Alcaraz, Sinner and others. Federer's prime gets called a weak era by kids who were too young to have seen it. But make no mistake, the field was full of men back then, not boys. They were just tougher, battle scarred opponents, not a bunch of softies whose parents forced them to play.
@@zakariadjouzi660 The top 10 players of "the weak era" would have destroyed any top 10 player of the last 10-15 years. Federer lost a lot of important matches to the "weak era" players whereas the Serb has only struggled with either Roger or Nadal for the last 10 years. Roger was beating Agassi and Sampras in his early 20s while they were still on top of their game since they hadn't stopped winning titles or reaching finals.
@@georgiostemirsidis1966 The top 10 players of that week era were a joke that got already dominated by a teenager clay courter in Nadal who even dominated Federer since then before Djokovic did the same some years after it to expose how weak Federer even at his peak/prime and his weak era actually were, that's why Federer who mostly dominated that weak era couldn't keep up just after that with Nadal & Djokovic next to their much stronger era of the past decade, also Nadal & Djokovic only struggled to each others coz they were that good and dominant against everyone even Federer himself specially Nadal who owned Federer like no player ever did to his main rival in tennis.
Also Federer barely ever lost any important games to weak era players who couldn't keep up with him & his serve nor did they even keep up with a prodigy Nadal being just a clay courter mainly by then that's why Federer won most of his Slams back in that same weak era before he struggled to win them after that when Nadal then Djokovic joined him at the top of the tennis hirarchy, also when Federer started his career as a teenager in 1998 Sampras & Aggasi were already elders for tennis players aka too old to dominate and when he started beating them during his 20's at the early 2000's Sampras was playing his last tennis season before retiring due to his injuries ruining him back in 2002 which was 2 years before Federer even reached his prime just like Aggasi who could barely keep up with the highest level of tennis mainly back then before he also retired in 2006 for those same reasons, so the first rival & legit test in tennis which Federer concistantly had was a clay courter Nadal as a teenager back then which already started dominating him to expose him & his weak era of mid 2000's.

He won most of his slams after Nadal had already emerged. Between 2005 and 2011 Federer was unquestionably superior to Djokovic. Philippousis, Kafelnikov, Kuerten, Enqvist, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Nalbandian, Safit, Hewitt, Moya, Agassi, Ljubicic and Roddick are some of the players that you believe are worse than Zverev, Berretini, Wawrinka, Tsonga, Cilic, Rublev all of whom Roger still outshined even as an old timer. Federer turned pro in 1998 and in 3 years was already a top player and winning huge titles. Novak turned pro in 2003 and wasn't nearly as good as Federer or Nadal for like 8-9 years. Novak barely beat a 38 year old Federer at Wimbledon. I honestly don't see what makes Djokovic "way better". Keep in mind that Novak started really beating him when Roger was in his mid 30s. Almost every match before 2011 was a straight sets win for Federer. It'd make more sense if you argued that he's better than Nadal.
Federer the GOAT and my all-time favourite player. At his best he was an artist on the court, floating around the court making it look effortless.
You will always be my tennis hero. I will miss his charm and cool composure in the court. The best of the best in the business. Happy retirement to the one and only tennis Super Star that I know of.

In terms of visual genius, Roger is the GOAT - sublime skill, easy movement on the court, out-of-this-world shot making and that second version of the backhand was incredible. He had Nadal and Djokovic to push him to unbelievable heights, I’m not sure we’ll see someone like him for at least 50 years

What makes it more amazing is that his competitors weren't slouches. They were also the best of the best and he was still able to pull those shots off.
When he is in his groove.. he becomes a treasure box.. we will never know what shot will come out next to surprise the opponent and spectators together. He did that all with effortless looking fluid style..
He wasn't someone I supported but he is part of my childhood. Much respect to him and for his part in Tennis I will surely miss seeing his name pop when ever I would check Tennis results.

Other people have to learn their shots. Roger created them, imagined them. He knows exactly how he wants the ball to fly and how to move the racket to get it to happen, no matter how he's positioned. It's hard to describe how different it is to watch him than anyone else. It's something about his timing and footwork and how early he takes every shot that means he almost never looks like he's reaching for the ball or caught on the back foot.
Its Magical in any way to watch him play... no one had this magic to play this sport...Roger didnt play just Tennis. he made artwork on the court :-)

Class act and a beautiful thing to watch when he was in the zone, which was most of the time. The one thing, that by in large goes unnoticed, is how he watches the ball through contact. Most players are looking to where they hope the ball will go before making contact. It's a millisecond difference but I'd be curious to know how this possibly helped him to play at the level he did.
yes - that millisecond of literally watching the ball onto the strings is often the difference between good great shots and 'miracle' shots that seem to come from no where - i can definitely attest to experiencing that in both tennis and squash that when i watched the ball onto the strings everything was effortless (body, foot placement, swing ) and timing was just spot on -
