Very elegant shaping form on the back of your doghouse, bravo Matt.
I suggest making all three front windows in the doghouse as big as possible to maximize your view forward, even if that means fixed glass rather than the hatches. It would improve your sight-lines thru the rather tall doghouse structure in front of the helm and will be much much more aesthetically pleasing from both inside and outside. If you need hatch ventilation install them in the coach roof above those two trapezoids where you were talking about mounting them.
The hatches will still give sight lines forward but the big plus, while under sail, is the forced ventilation that will occur. Roof hatches won’t give that through breeze while underway. You can also pass drinks etc through the hatch to someone forward. 😊
Enjoyed the personal story of Duracell's past. To encounter the storm as they did, is in itself terrifying, to stay the least. "Thanks" for sharing the story and Duracell's on going history!
I’ve watched several wooden boat builds (the usual) and they are great for the skills and the beauty of the product. I’ve not watched so many fibreglass builds but your channel is great. The pace of the build in videos is very good.
If I were younger I’d love to do something similar but we cannot wind the clock back. But I can watch you and some others so thank you and hope to see you sail it someday!
Loved the history about Hurricane Bob. We lived in the town of Narragansett and lost a couple trees in that Hurricane. The hurricane eye went right over us - only a few miles from Jamestown and your boat's beaching. You guys are perfect for keeping this boat's history interesting!!
I was living on the Jersey shore when Hurricane Bob hit. It was a late season storm that took the region by surprise. NJ dodged the worst of the storm, but it slammed New England.
Seems as if this boat has been through a lot! Beached by a hurricane, t-boned a large steel ship, whipped around the world at the Vendée (been around Cape Horn...), most definitely Duracell will enjoy its new incarnation as a "Comfortable Cruising Home", and, as far as remembering each project while you are sailing it in the French Polinesia... maybe you guys will just enjoy the finished piece, rather than dissecting the parts. And CZcams will be around for at least another 30 years, so all those memories are well kept. Episode 101 was womderful as always!
It's Wednesday - time to watch some lamination!!!
The videos just get better and better!
The water trap around the top of the doghouse is brilliant. Well done!
The side windows as rectangles look rather odd to me. I’m really struck by how odd it looks.
I vote for size equal to or at least symmetrical in terms of height with the center window.
No doubt whatever you decide will be as beautiful as it is functional.
Remember, the "side windows" aren't really windows, but clear/tinted hatches that will open and close for ventilation. Those (if I understand Matt correctly) will be purchased and not made by Matt himself, and generally come in square/rectangular shapes.
You need to see the episode concerning how these were made and logic that went into their shape, placement and construction.
Composite hand rail would be so awesome! Please do that somewhere!
LOTS of fiberglass / epoxy work.......the wheelhouse design is fantastic - big, airy space - perfect!
I remember Duracell beaching in Jamestown and the legend of Mike Plant sailing it throughout the storm. I was racing 210s in Marblehead as a teenager and we had to race into Boston to get our trailer to haul the boat out. We didn't make it back in time.
Love the hand grips on the back of the doghouse. Nice touch
So good to see your parents helping on tha build. God bless you and your family.
Cutting a giant hole and saying, "Oh yes!" Is so much better than cutting a giant hole and saying, "Oh no!"
Award from me for best-in-class sound. Mega.
Love that story - it took place right in our backyard basically!
It's interesting how you chose to orient the flanking windscreen hatches to the center lens, which is opposite of the flanking windows orientation to the companionway entry. Such conundrums are inescapable in projects of this scale. You know the choice is good if you can explain it. I start with "Is it 'consistent' with what the eye sees?" 😢
Great video this week! Really good!
Hey Guys, Matt, one thing I will always look back on with this project is particularly your Mum and Dad’s involvement, it kind of seems proper that in a little way they will always be part of this project and sailing with you. Matt, why don’t you make the water catcher sides higher than across the top, I would imagine that the boat would always be on a list when under sail so wouldn’t the water run over the sides, sorry that’s a non-sailing boater question who just loves your channel. The meal looked so yummo
it could run over the sides when we're out sailing, but aesthetically I didn't want it to be too high
There are many methods of creating art. The use of fiberglass and carbon fiber by Matt raises this "art form" to another level.
Matt, once Duracell is finished you need to be a self employed boat builder. Your skill set is through the roof and besides we’d be able to follow you on even more projects!!
Anyway - as always a great video.
Much love from Germany
I’m a bit in awe of your skills, Matt. To the uninitiated, it may all seem simple and straightforward but the truth is that everything is sticky and everything is trying to stick to itself and all the the things you don’t want it to stick to. Like all skilled craftspersons, you make it look effortless. Thank you.
Great episode. Thx.
Brilliant as always
Great templating and attention to detail. Well Done!
What a wonderful episode. Thanks
Love it so much keep it up as always 💘
Most well produced video yat! Cheers!
Brilliant work and planning as usual!
Looking scarily good guys!
Thanks again for the video
I also really like the shape of the trailing edge of the doghouse. Big changes to the doghouse with the windscreen cutout. I'll bet it lets in a lot of light. Thanks for the video 👍👍👍😁
Great episode, the history of Duracell is amazing!
Scoring the corner pieces to bend them is called "kerfing". Ironically I learned this from someone whose English is his second language: Mads from Sail Life... his English vocab is better than mine, and I'm a native speaker of 67 years! Love your channel and look forward to every episode (along with Tally Ho)
Love the New Orleans style jazz music!
Looks wonderful as usual this week. Keep up the grand work
WoW... cool story !!
Love this project!I have been a subscriber and fan for I don´t know how long. I haven´t commented before but thought today I would, I have really enjoyed seeing the evolution of the boat and the channel. Just wanted to congratulate you both. I have enjoyed all of it and I am planning on seeing this through with you guys! ha ha
Watching your vids makes me less scared of my own upcoming (small by your standards) fibreglass job of building a new fridge! :)
Great to see all the little bits being wrapped up, I know it will be making you feel amazing.
Keep up the great work team, truly inspiring. 🤩
Enjoyed the old Duracell story and looking forward to the future stories. Great job on the boat house and window placement.
You do such great work. Nice to hear the family boat history. Carbon and water catch , always a pleasure
nice, super nice episode
Those front windscreens looks awesome!
You talk great 🤩 love your content keep up the hard work with the videos editing. And hard work on the boat. We just love how you just be yourself no matter what it looks like we love you 😘
that's so sweet, thx
Love the wings of the pilothouse. Don't really like the hatches forward. Did you consider doing 3 fixed windows forward (that you can shape to a more harmonious arrangement) and mount 2 hatches on the roof?
You are just great. The whole family is great! Love from Sweden!!!
Loved the music with the unmistakable sound of that gorgeous Hammond B3.
So clever with the water system
Wow - fantastic progress! Really looking great! Like the finishing touches on the dog house.
Love to that Corgi ❤🎉😊
Nice design on the trailing edge of the doghouse👍 and i love the Carbon UD In the Cut-outs, it will be an incredible strong frame. Good work as usual 👌
Very nice modifications to the deckhouse and some family DIY🎉❤
Ive completely changed the look of 2 boats by re doing the windows, was the most exciting part of a restoration for me. Lets you personalise and modernise all to your own ideal! Nice job Matt!
Such awesome videography with all of the interesting shots. Great info as always and so fun to watch this while in the office. I think seeing that little dog in there lowered my blood pressure quite a bit!
Great video as usual 👌 🇬🇧
The light inside the boat from the windows is absolutely spectacular, my goodness Duracell is gonna be such a beautiful boat full of wonderful light. First time seeing the dimensions from looking into the boat from the cockpit wow. Great work as always guys and the little history was magic. Thank you for another super episode. Sending positive energy...Neil😊☘
Hi Matt , it’s fantastic that Duracell, the yacht has so much history and hopefully you will not change its name. I just think it is such a wonderful boat/yacht and the history it has is incredible. Keep up the good work. Love your videos , Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia 🇦🇺🧑🏾🦽
The edge pieces that you slotted to give you that nice cut is called a 'kerf cut'. You can do it to bend certain pieces of wood the same way their is a formula or a calculator you can use online depending on the angle you want to curve
Good morning La Paz 😻and Crew , happy Purrsday everyone 😸😺
Your mother is a great helper, and she is adorable!
It so nice to see your parents get involved with the boat build and especially how much your mom has contributed to the long-term boat build. When you plan for your rainwater catchment drains, you may want to consider adding a raised filtration screen. I've seen that on other boats and it helps to capture some of the large chunks of debris so that it doesn't end up in your holding tanks. Also, for the front side windows, the position the cardboard is in now looks very nice, but at the end of the day which orientation would give you the best viewing angle for sailing?
Matt - Your a very wealthy man indeed having a supportive family like that even if they were Stink Potters in the past. ;> Kidding aside did they also mix it up and sail recreationally on the side or were they always just power boaters.
That first family cruise with them will allow them to enjoy the fruits of their labors and should be a delightful time.
I wouldn't leave it up to CZcams to maintain an archive of your adventure here and would encourage some personal archival quality backups along with hanging on to a device that can read them. I made the mistake of starting mine on TR-1 Data Tapes which now are hard to find compatible with modern PC operating systems.
Best!
Hello from Ontario Canada- Duracell is coming along very nicely! I like the collaboration with sailing Melody on your mutual water collecting roof builds.
Cheers - Aaron
This boat is coming together really nicely. Brilliant thinking on water catchment. Eggplant Parm looks delicous 😋
It all looks SO good! I've watched other sailboats being built in the boatyard I worked at, both sail and a 25' fishing boat, but watching you work, everything finally made perfect sense and also made me confident in doing composite work myself. Thank you, thank you, thank you. (I haven't started yet, we're redesigning our interior settees and changing the layout and shape and because of your channel, I know we can do it.) We are looking forward to seeing your project completed and seeing you out there sailing. Namaste.
cool! Best of luck with your upcoming project.
Loved this one. Great to see some old photos of previous boats and you-two in the early days. Who is the cute corgi? Food family and reminisces always make for relatable content
that's Pea, Judy and Malone's dog
That shapely cut/hand-hold cut out looks SO much better!!
Just realised you get your understated atmosphere and demeanour from your mum there. It's so similar.
COOL...as always😁
Great taste in sound tracks. I crank it when the music comes on.
I don't sail , the extent of my boating experience is getting on ferries lol, but I love watching people who are very good at what they do build and fix things , I have been watching your channel for about 18 months , and I also watch Sampson Boat Co channel , and watching you both make something that essentially does the same thing lol , but watching how the techniques and technology has changed . I just love what both channels do and seeing how far you have come .
Watching on a Sunday morn from Carriacou W.I. - loving the aft doghouse flair! Also, great article in Sail magazine this month👍
thanks, Nathan!
Great work Matt, good to see the whole crew helping out. Wish I could help out too with food like that on offer 😂❤
This video was a good one, the time and memories that you are creating with your family and having video through out it. YOU are so blessed. This brought back so many fond memories from my family. The detailing that you are creating in this boat is going to be absolutely amazing. You guys are doing big stuff. (Retired machinist)
Thank you Joseph
From history to dog house rear styling such a lot of work done this week with help from mum and dad , cutting the windows out must have been a little scary but it’s all looking amazing Matt , well done to you 4 it was a great episode once again , 👍Graham L
Matt thanks for the Story and hope you Keep the Name Duracell or II Last it so awesome to see The Family working has one Awesome Building Team.
Duracell is something special for sure. Your story about it, from your ownership forward. Will be the next chapter. We will all hope the ‘terrifying’ stuff does not become a reality for your tenure. Fair winds, Matt
Hi from Sweden, as Always your videos is 👍👍👍👍👍 Just love you guys. The Jazz theam musik is just killing me😂 sorry but yes it does.
Stay safe and be blessed ❤
Henning from Sweden
I am in aww of your skills ! I am waiting for y'all's next video. I have seen all and has helped me with small projects. Your parents are awesome ! I have owned many boats but nothing of Duracell caliber. I really respect you guys . Love, Bryan Rogers of Cross Hill S.C.
thanks Brian!
great video 2x👍
Great project! Can't wait to see her sailing! I don't know if you're planning to have a possibility of steering the boat from inside the doghouse in heavy weather, but wouldn't it be useful to have a couple of windows in the roof to be able to check what's going on up the mast?
Hei
Best from Norway, love your video.
Do you usually do wet fillets when laying fibreglass over? It’s a clever idea! We might borrow that haha Deckhouse cut looked good!
Nice windows !!
Yes, windows seems right from the outside it's looking good!
love the cat admiring the dog house - but when will the cat house be ready to move into ?
well, unfortunately for the timeline of the project, it has to be fully inspected and approved first...
Wednesday evening again ,
Let’s look laminating again ,
She looks better and better every New video..
👍🏻🤓
Greetings from the Netherlands
🇱🇺
Matt, Really like the way you think and work with composites. Put hand holds everywhere possible. Anywhere you are on a vessel you might need to grab a hold suddenly. Something needs to be there. I'm assuming that when you have a glob of goo you've just scraped off there's a target in mind for it. Perhaps the next fillet? thanks, Glenn/NC
Matt as always great work. I would put 3 heavy duty windows at the front of the doghouse. I think the hatch’s would look strange but, that’s my opinion.
A lot of style coming out in this week's build, nice!
Would of been nice if you'd explain why the carbon in the windows, you know a lot of us are learning too, so please share your expertise in dialog regarding that part!
Also with Matt being such a hard introverted nut to crack, it was fun watching Janneke pull out pieces and parts of him, which at times Matt had to speak to as well...haha, poor fella 🙂
I love your mom's hoodie, I almost went to WSU.
I was in cape cod for hurricane bob. 100 Foot Oak fell through our yard and into the neighbors garage.. never forget the sound all these years later... Happy Halloween gang!
for me the best looking option for these front windows is when they are parallel to the middle, like this right line
Every video you do has the "Epoxy Pump" scene, like Tom Cruise runs in every movie he's in, same. This was a great video showing all the little things that need to be done, and how you approach them. 👍🏻
Gotta have the epoxy pump scene!
I remember that hurricane I drove from Boston to mystic Ct the morning of the storm right through RI . Its one thing to be in a car quite another thing to be on a boat
to the question of will you remember people and what happened during the build? - If you play(or listen) to a different piece of music for each significant event/ happening. It will stick in your mind for ever. Not sure how that works but we used to take trainees out in the big blue ocean for sail training. Insisting each class/ group brought their own music along. 30 years later - put the music on - and you are right back at the time.
Nice to see your Dad and Mom, i know your mom has helped out in the past but i look at her and then at you ,was he adopted?but now i get it! good job mom and dad!
I wondered if you knew about the Hurricane Bob grounding in Jamestown. I was there to watch Duracell removed from the beach. I wasn't so lucky. I lost my Hobie 33 sloop in nearby Padanaram Harbor on Buzzards Bay when she ended up on the bottom of a pile of boats that drug their moorings and ended up on some rocks. Padanaram is the home to Concordia who built Mike Plant's subsequent boat Coyote. But the Concordia and Coyote story is best told on another day. But I did see it launched for a float tests before the keel was attached.
