These are probably one my favorite parts in the series. Wilhelm and Theresia's story is just beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
21:13 I read this scene similarly to you, Wilhelm in all likelihood never outright told Theresia what she wanted to hear when she was still alive. The japanese dialogue in this scene also supports this reading, with Wilhelm figuratively morphing back into his younger self (he changes the way he says "I love you" to the more informal way that is similarly to the way young Wilhelm talks in the flashbacks) to convey his feelings for Theresia properly.
Also, the word he uses for love ("aishiteru") is the stronges form of "LOVE" that the japanese language has, but it is kinda impossible to convey this in English. A similar thing also happened in episode 16 and 18 respectively with Rem's two love confessions. In episode 16, right before her death, she told Subaru "daisuki", which means "I love you a lot" but can be translated to "like you very much as well", but in episode 18, the word Rem uses is "aishite imasu", similarly to Wilhelms "I love you" in this episode.

Yeah, aishiteru is barely used. It’s reserved for some very specific scenarios, and there’s even a level of “love” above it (don’t remember the term exactly but youll likely never hear it in an anime).
You usually use aishiteru on your death bed sort of thing.
Daisuki is what’s usually used. And the fact Rem used aishiteru in episode 18 is meant to show how deeply in love she is, but also to an extent that’s a bit unhealthy since they’re not even married, etc.

I guess some extra context and story for Wilhelm since i doubt they’re gonna adapt his story!
Theresia is part of the Astrea family which are a bunch of master swordsman, one master swordsman is around at a time and its passed down thru the generations. Reins grandma, Theresia, was the master swordsmans before him. Then reinhardt got it.
Wilhelm took Theresias last name. Incidentally, Wilhelm was a little shit when he was younger. He was very much like old Subaru in some ways, which is why he took a liking to him or at least he an understanding of him (which is why he gave up on him when he noticed he stopped trying and was relying on his RBD for everything).
Wilhelm was also lowkey misogynistic, but after meeting his wife he stops acting like that. I feel like him taking her last name is also indicative of his change even if its because of her family. As traditionally, women take a mans last name. But he took hers, and he also works for a woman who wants to be ruler of the country. Which again, is indicative of his growth since he thought women were much weaker than men.

The back story of Wilhelm is really touching and sad. And his regret and love to his wife is really hurting the audiences. 😭
Honestly later in the story, Emilia or Priscilla show more leadership. Maybe not to a whole army but definitely in their camps and they do a lot more with a smaller body count.
i disagree honestly, this is probably cuz i read the novels but all the candidates show great signs of leadership. they cut out a lot of content from when they showed up in episode 13 but they all have good qualities for leadership!
@alaimoon5250 I don’t know is wrong with my CZcams but I said the same thing about the novels. Emilia and Pricilla have far better leadership, maybe not equating to an army like Crusch but within their respective camps, they manage to pull off more crazier things with a lower body count.

Knowing what happens after this part, it's kinda painful to rewatch Subaru and Rem's cute moments
Just for everyone to know in the light novel that final scene with Rem is when Subaru admits to her he has feelings for her too. They made cuts to make the season more autoconclusive (and to an extent season 2 did the same)
Just read the scene rn since i have the books and its pretty fucked up tbh. Rem basically tricks him in the worst way possible even if she didn’t mean and Subaru sincerely loves her. Also, since the anime skirts around the idea of Subaru also loving Rem… i get the feeling the author wants things to be a bit more complicated than the stereotypical harem route in most anime
he also just straight up admits he doesn’t like harems whatsoever, a certain villain in re zero is actually just a evil version of a harem protagonist (you know who im talking about if you read ahead)
@chelronin7843 Well, it won't end up as a harem (unless the author changes his mind, which I doubt). But I think he has made it evident Subaru has deep feelings of love for rem
@@chelronin7843 I just read the manga version, and the author himself, made a short story that got Rem mention that she wouldn't mind being Subaru's second wife. It happens before the Whale, so I think this version in better
@@reguluscorneas1366 The regular novel mentions rem wanting to be his 2nd wife, the manga isn’t unique in rhat aspect. The author still said he doesn’t like harem endings. Emilia said she thinks someone should only be married and with one person. So even if Subaru keeps rem as his “2nd wife”, Emilia wouldn’t like that at all. So he would still have to choose one of them unless Emilia changes her mind for some reason.
We also dont know whats gonna happen with Rem, how her character will progress is up in the air.

I know that Subaru imprinted on Emilia like a baby duck, but Crusch is such a competent leader and Rem is so supportive and cute, I feel like my man needs to reevaluate who he supports for taking the throne and wifing up respectively.

crusch doesn’t even see him that way, it would be weird if she was an option. and rem isn’t only “supportive and cute”. if he did go with rem, he would’ve gone for the easy choice, which is such an insult for rem and i’m glad she didn’t run away with him. for rem to have a healthy relationship with subaru, she needs to learn to how to navigate through her inferiority complex and learn to love herself, otherwise she would only see her worth in giving up her life for him and others (which she already thinks btw, in ep 15 she calls subaru her reason to die), and ironically it’s what drew so many people into rem at first. Rem deserves to love herself first and foremost, not just depend on subaru and her sister for her self worth. and crusch already has a very special relationship with ferris (though not a romantic one but in my opinion it transcends romantic or platonic). Subaru and emilia’s relationship is special not just cuz he “imprinted on her like a baby duck” (lol that was funny) but because she was the first person to show him kindness without any payment, the first person he truly let his guard down around too in ep 8. just because their relationship has ups and downs doesn’t make it any less special in my opinion, honestly it does the opposite! People also tend to fall victim into thinking that emilia’s only character is being kind and they expect her to be understanding (which is kinda what subaru did lol) so people got angry at her for rightfully rejecting the main character’s behavior against her, wanting her to be like the version he put up on a pedestal. The version that’s kind and understanding and listens to every word he says, which sounds similar to rem if u think abt it! But rem only thinks that because she’s so heavily dependent on subaru and her sister, she idolizes both of them so so much and it’s just not healthy. Both rem and ram have very unhealthy portrayals of love and i think it’s done in a very well written way, especially rem’s. i feel like people think emilia is just the typical mary sue that’s perfect and doesn’t have flaws but she’s so much more than that, she’s the core of the story and an amazing character. Also i know this is probably just a silly comment you didn’t put much thought in but i’m kinda passionate abt these characters if u can’t tell lol. i hope you wouldn’t think of them as only “options” they’re super fleshed out and feel like their own individual people so them being only options isn’t the best way to describe them since the theme of rezero isn’t focused on romance but love. i could say so much more abt emilia and subaru’s dynamic but i’ll just stay quiet for now!
