  • Was FLOORED by DSOTM,
    Absolutely CRUSHED by WYWH &
    Now Animals is here to finish the job and completely lock me away.
    I truly believe that between these three albums, my favorite will continue. to keep flip flopping one to the next. You bet I'm already stoked for the next time we visit PF with The Wall!

    This came out in the midst if the late 70’s disco craze. Those rock fans of us around at the time knew Animals was good, but time has led us to truly appreciate this unique artistic achievement of creativity. Your analysis sheds new light on their work. This was Floyd at their peak, nobody else was making music like this, and for anyone who thinks rock music is simple are sadly mistaken here.
    Two years later they kicked it up another notch with The Wall.

  • @frankpentangeli7945
    @frankpentangeli7945 Před 2 lety +10

    To me the trio of albums The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals were the peak of Pink Floyd's power. I really didn't like The Wall at all, except for a few decent tracks, as I found it much more negative, more influenced by disco, more predictable and much less driven by melody than the previous three albums. I attended the Animals concert at Montreal's Olympic Stadium in the summer of 1977 and it was a once in a lifetime, unforgettable experience. That is reportedly the very concert where Roger Waters came up with the concept for The Wall. Anyway, I was high as a kite, ecstatic and astounded by what I saw and heard. Simply beautiful!

    • @HDitzzDH
      @HDitzzDH Před 2 lety +3

      Another Brick In The Wall is probably their most overrated song ever, not a big fan. The Wall is more a collection of multiple shorter songs that contributed to the entire story. But there were a lot of amazing songs from The Wall… Hey You, Goodbye Blue Sky, Young Lust, Don’t Leave Me Now (I love the desperation) and of course Comfortably Numb.
      Was it not the case that it was the fact that Roger got angry and spit on a fan during the Animals tour that he came up with the idea for the album?

    • @frankpentangeli7945
      @frankpentangeli7945 Před 2 lety

      @@HDitzzDH It has certainly been reported that way. And he allegedly did that in Montreal. At one point in the show, during Pigs On the Wing, he stopped playing to berate the audience for yelling so much, saying something like "For fuck's sake, I'm trying to play a song here!", among other things. The next day I heard that a lot of people in the upper decks couldn't really hear the PA system properly so they were yelling. I was in the general admission section on the floor of the stadium, so I heard just fine. I did take issue with the fact that the crew had to "equalize the system" (as they announced) shortly before the start of the concert. That equalization process consisted of BLARING an incredibly loud HISS through the speakers for about 20 minutes straight. That was NOT a pleasant experience, especially since I was beginning to trip at the time, but once it stopped, that's when the magic began.
      As for The Wall, as I said there are only a very few tracks I could relate to, especially since, as you said, the album was a collection of shorter songs that I was never able to space out on, unlike the previous three albums. Let's just say it didn't engulf me in bliss. I would even put Meddle, Obscured By Clouds, Ummagumma and A Saucerful of Secrets ahead of The Wall in my list of favourite Floyd records.

    In the winter of 1998 I was traveling with my grandfather. As his gift to me for finishing high school he took me to Europe and the UK. While in London I went to the Virgin Records mega store and bought two records… one of which was “Animals”. I had just started to fall head over heals in love with Pink Floyd, but I knew nothing about this record because the radio stations never played any songs from it. It’s so dense and heavy that I found it hard to find my way inside at first. The electric piano intro of “sheep” is what first grabbed me, and pulled me in… I will never forget riding on a train from Chelsea up to Windsor Castle, I had my eyes closed, headphones on, when I opened my eyes out the window I could see Battersea power station, which is the massive brick structure on the album cover… I didn’t even know it was in London, or even a real building… Pretty amazing.
    Btw: the other CD I bought that day was “The Bends” by Radiohead, and don’t get me started on how incredible and important that album is to me. I love your reactions, and I highly recommend checking out Radiohead!
    And also Steely Dan ;)

But I've never understood Roger saying he was Pink Floyd. Yes he wrote 98% of the lyrics and played bass, but it's like he doesn't even acknowledge the contributions of the other three. Of all the different formats this album has been released in, the 8-track cartridge version is the most interesting. Due to how much tape each reel inside an 8-track had, it was going to be hard to fit the songs on it like they fit on both vinyl and cassette. So to adjust, the group just combined both parts of "Pigs on the Wing"; with the area between the parts filled in with a continuation of the acoustic guitar backing chords, and above it a majestic electric guitar solo. However, rather than having David Gilmour playing it as usual, they brought in this session guitarist/roadie friend of theirs named Snowy White to play it (yes, that is the guy's name).

Dogs was called You Gotta Be Crazy, and Sheep was called Raving and Drooling. The original plan was to have the whole of Shine On on one side of the album and these two songs on the other side. Deciding to rework the Wish You Were Here album into what it eventually became was one of. if not the best decision Pink Floyd ever made.
    The original songs were released on the Wish You Were Here Immersion Edition and can probably be found on youtube somewhere :)

    Floored, crushed and locked away. I love it. Yes, if I had to choose, Animals is my favorite Pink Floyd album, top to bottom, even with Wish You Were Here in mind. During the tour for this one, they played both albums in their entirety, but in slightly different song orders. Usually beginning with Sheep, then Dogs, Pigs (3), then Pigs on the Wing with a guitar solo. Then the Wish You Were Here album top to bottom, then a couple from Dark Side of the Moon, Money with extended jam and Us and Them, and an earlier song called Careful With That Axe, Eugene. I would've loved to see/hear them at that show, but I wasn't born yet, which always puts a damper on concert plans... I have a couple of concert bootlegs from that tour, though.
    Crystal! I don't know if someone said this already, but when Animals was released in 1977, on vinyl of course, there was also a special 8-track version. On that version, Pigs on the Wing parts 1 & 2 are combined with a beautiful electric guitar solo in the middle played by a fellow musician, Snowy White. I used to think it was David Gilmour because the style was similar to his. I hope you get to hear it. I don't know if that version has been "officially" released by Floyd since 77, but it was re-released on a Snowy White compilation in 1995. If you search on YT for "pink floyd pigs on the wing full length version", it should be at the top.
    I always love your reactions/analysis! Thank you again!

    For your next Floyd, try something more obscure, like Obscured by Clouds or Atom Heart Mother before the bigger Bangs of The Wall or Meddle. When you finally do The Wall. You must followup with the movie The Wall.

    Animals Concert tour is the only time I've seen Pink Floyd live.
    I did not read Animal Farm in school, I didn't own the album.
    I bought the 8 track tape of the album right before the concert and the music didn't connect with me.
    It was the longest concert and I was completely unconnected to it until they started playing the music I knew.
    I've been sharing Pink Floyd with by boys and plan to take them to se Roger Waters later this year.
    I've just found out they are released a remastered version of Animals and Roger Waters will be performing it.
    Damn.
    I just read the book and started listening to the album again. It's better when it's not on 8 track.
    I'm glad you're listening now.

    Sheep (as Raving and Drooling) and Dogs (as You Gotta Be Crazy) both pre-date Wish You Were Here, having originated during the 1974 tour. Both songs in those early forms were supposed to be part of Wish You Were Here.
    Only the Pigs songs were written specifically for Animals. The 8-track version of Pigs On The Wing linked both parts of the song bridging them with a non-David Gilmour guitar solo.

    I do love the fact that your so young in this era, going down the Pink Floyd rabbit hole. I am 62 so I was 12 when I found Pink Floyd they and Led Zeppelin are my 1 and 2 favorite bands. I worked in a record store from around 1974-1977 so needless to say was one of greatest era's of music, I have several favorites. One in particular a lesser known band The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, first song from them was Alex Harvey Band the man in the jar czcams.com/video/SNiAY-AfaK4/video.html and it was just so different from anything I heard before. The intro mostly bass and piano, a little scratchy guitar with a little rock flavor for about the first 30 second but it was building in intensity, then the vocals come but not singing more like narrating a story, and it seems just like your there watching the scene he is describing and the music long story short band is in my top 10 all time favorite bands many great tunes, they have about 8 lps, and I would love to see you breakdown their album titled
    The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Tomorrow Belongs To Me Genre: Rock
    Style: Glam, Prog Rock
    Year: 1975 not their best album but very but it's so diverse

    The first time I ever heard "Animals" was live in the Boston Garden. A wild show with the floating pig and tons of other mind blowing special effects, but we left the place mildly disappointed that we didn't get to hear any Dark Side or Wish You were here...
    Still, I rushed out to buy the album the next day and gave it quite a few serious listens before I realized that this album was my favorite of them all. It remains at the top of the heap for me. With a good stereo in the car, this is the best road trip music I've ever experienced. Just a bit dangerous though, because you can really get lost in the music when you should be concentrating on driving...

    I liked your clipping at the beginning. I got in trouble with Pink Floyd fans for saying that I thought some of the guitar/instrumental solos were too long, but you did well at focusing-in one where the record's beauty lies.

    One thing you were supposed to notice is how David Gilmore beautifully used a new musical Instrument started by Peter Frampton. It is a rock vocal "voice box" to electronically or robotically digitize voice or sounds. Yes! Those dog barking sounds in "dogs" is all from David Gilmore's voice. No barking dogs recordings were done but how David Gilmore barks it out. In Pigs of side 2 more David Gilmore grunting out pigs noises just added more to listening to pigs grub for food on a farm. Drums, electric guitars and Roger Waters lyrics just heavy metallized Pink Floyd into their heavy metal new sound awakening all other heavy metal groups well into the 1980s.

    Floyd was my first true love as well at age 11, and Animals was the second album I heard (the first being Wish You Were Here which I was attracted to due to the amazing album art concept). My next few years were transformational, with Floyd being the musical score underlying my teens.
    Of course you understand this album more if you also read George Orwell's ''Animal Farm''... another work of art I found about that time and which heavily influenced me. Combine this book with the masterful lyric writing of Floyd (Roger Waters in particular), and through the lens of Conservative British values during the Thatcher era, and the themes that you discover are as relevant and powerful in our current social context as they were then. You are right to surmise there is a LOT going on in the lyrics.
    BTW... the dogs are pretty bad guys and not so diverse as you are contemplating, but they are still just pawns and ultimately not a bad as the pigs.

    The particular sound of Pink Floyd is remarkably highlighted through your reaction.
    Indeed, the work in the studio to refine their sound is unparalleled.
    It's sad that Steve Levine had the documentary, which described this studio work, removed from the CZcams platform.
    In this documentary, we could hear the recordings without the studio effects of some of the songs of Pink Floyd.
