As a Chinook maintainer and crew chief for the US Army, I would like to correct that the chinook is still capable of water landings and 160th still does practice water landings. As for the rest of the army no we do not preform water landings anymore. All in all though is a very good Video! 👍

The risk assessment matrix does not go into negatives. That and the down time needed for maintenance would count heavily against Co/Bat/Brig levels. No commander would allow for such silliness.

Those yellow stickers on the Seaking are not to keep water out. They are overflow outlets for the hydraulic systems. The only reason they were used here was to prevent any possible enviromental contamination of the lake.
Yep. The CH-124s were known to piss fluids at randim intervals. I did see one flying in person only once. Any other time they were in bits & pieces.
Where do those fluids go / what happens when they can't drain out of those holes?
my guess, as a civilian mechanic is they fill up the scupper bowl, and overflow into the area below it, for example the transmission dripping onto passengers@@THE-X-Force
I worked on that exact seaking and did the preps for water landing..probly did the prep for that shot too... we absolutely used the tape to keep water out, along with drain plugs in the belly, we want to minimize water intake at all cost, safety and also a good protective measure as water landings were not great on the machine.... also we used the tape to write chuck norris jokes, that helo wouldnt take off without 1 chuck norris joke on it.

This video gave me flashbacks of going thru the Dunker training in the Navy. The Dunker is a mock-up of the helicopter cabin that trains us to get out of a submerged helo. While upside down and blindfolded.
Indeed, we had to do similar training before going off shore. Although we didn't use blindfolds, since the helicopters would only fly at daylight hours. But the survival rate would probably be a lot lower in the North Sea, than the swimmingpool we trained in:-).

You have to train this also when you want to go for work on a oil or gasplattform. It was one of the cooler part of the safety training. Also turn it upside down and get out.

You have to react in a couple of seconds to: Upside down, blackness, and very wetness. What was that escape procedure again? That lever's down here? NO Up there! And I have to pull it HOW HARD! And it SHOULD work? OH NO! On THIS helo, there's NO LEVER! I havta pull that INSERT in the window seal, like, ya know, like in a bus!
Funny story- While surfing in the Pacific Northwest once, a coast Guard helo was drilling a few hundred yards away... when it was about 40 feet high, there was a guy sitting in the open side door- and the guy behind booted him out of the chopper!! Then we got to watch as a frogman jumped in and rescued the first guy, only to see him get tossed out again!
Eventually we figured out that it was a training dummy of some sort, but, dang, it looked really, really realistic. Those guys (the real ones) are amazing in the water, especially with all of their gear. Very impressive even to us as seasoned bad-weather surfers (we thought WE were good...but they were pros.)

There was a good vid on the channel 'Smarter Every Day' that covered their skills- not just (JUST? Lol) jumping out of helicopters into huge waves and storms, but how each of then are also specialists in rigging designing and manufacturing (sewing) their own geat, etc... Other than combat specific skills (which I'd bet they also have), they are kinda like SEALS, if seals focused only on crazy search and rescue stuff...
I was a very good competitive swimmer, and later a surfer, and these guys could swim circles around me and my fellow surfers: So, I'm glad that the Coast Guard seems to be loosing it's outdated status as a kinda/sorta military force. Even on WW2, they were very important on convoy and rescue duties.

At 10:00, I've done this in Panama back in 1998 at the US Army Jungle Training School. We were trained how to do SPIES with 5th SF Group or Special Insertion and Extraction System, and yes it is as fun as it looks. Imagine flying 200' above the ocean and jungle at 60+ mph under a Blackhawk!

There was a helicopter pilot who flew tours of San Francisco. His tours spent a lot of time flying over the waters of SF Bay, and one thing you should know, these waters are very cold.
He was contacted by a sales person who had a system that would mount onto the skids of his helicopter and allow it to perform a water landing.
He didn't think he would ever need the system, but in the end he was talked into buying it.
After having it installed, on the very next flight he suffered an engine failure. activated the system and landed near the Golden Gate Bridge.
these are inflatable floats, either skid mounted or fuselage mounted. they are put on any helo which normally flies over water, particularly single engine. actually twin engine as well because the second engine normally only allows a controlled landing. anyone who doesnt have floats installed is an idiot. aircraft insurance premiums go down with htem even

My Nephew is a aviation mechanic for the marines. He was actually in an episode of a tv show recently. It was "How Did They Fix That" season 2 episode 4. I never knew how many hours of maintenance goes into each hour of flight.
I seen these maneuvers before. I was surprised when American special forces was practicing in my country cause we're friendly but not that buddy friendly. They eject the boat off the chinook while in the air. Then the forces below would take the boat for a ride then the chinook went low enough for them to pull everything back in. And they did it several times. They practiced by the bridge so I had a very good view just sitting by the balcony and watch them train

NEC8215 here. I can tell you the salt is more of an issue in a hover and affects all exposed surfaces. head and tailrotor included.
Just living by the water is bad enough enough. Have a soft wire wheel permanently in a drill press for cleaning corrosion off parts. Free All works great too. Better than WD40

They can stay on water as long as there is fuel, when the engines shut off, that is when the clock really starts.

I know the Chinooks will float. In the 1970’s I was working on a Offshore drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. We were working over a hundred miles from the coast. Chevron had a few Chinooks, two single rotor a one double. I wasn’t on it but one of the singles had engine trouble and landed in an inland canal. It floated just fine. They sent a crew boat out and pull it back to the heliport. CreWboats are boats, the most common are about 110’ long with about 40 seats like a Trailways bus. They can carry some supplies also. I always felt safer in those. The smaller helicopters would go down like a rock and the rotors would get you if drowning didn’t. Back in those days it seemed like every week one was going down. A lot of times they’d never find anything. I saw one body pulled up once a diver had hooked onto and he must have had 1000 shrimp eating on him.
I wouldn’t eat shrimp for a while after that !
Some civilian helicopters, like those used to fly to offshore drilling rigs, als have inflatable balloms for water landing. But in their case it is more as a safety feature, giving the occupants more time to ready the life raft if they go down over the ocean
The reason the Coast Guard doesn't water land the HH-52 and HH-3F helicopters is because they're retired from service...

I was a helicopter engineer in the Royal Navy and we had a Seaking Mk5 land on the water at sea with a suspected fuel issue. The ship I was on raced closer to it so it could just take off and hop onto the flight deck but a wave hit the tail rotor and destroyed it. This goes to show you how dangerous landing on the sea really is and this was done as a last resort. I still have the pictures of the helicopter in the water.

The french SA 321 Super Frelon was also made to be amphibious, but in fact water landings were only in case of emergency .
I served in vietnam and seen a UH-1 attamp to do a 360" over base camp blackhawk. Came in full speed went high with single fuel,pump pink smoke appeared then fell fliped backward but cought rotor speed . no crash.10th calvery ankhe.

There were a number of jobs I am glad I didn't have I.C. On a Hook or Crane crew . Riding up on some piece of heavy equipment clearing for a new FSB . Manning a " little bird " , and I hated conveys !! I was in a Armoured Cav unit in the FRG pre- rvn . I am glad I wasn't assigned to a armoured cav unit in RVN !! doc BG lll Corp 25th .. recon , leg and Blue .

Well now I'm shaking off the memories of that rotor wash while being in the water. Oh, and grounding out. Something rarely mentioned outside of the military. According to the rumors, the discharge can be strong enough to incapacitate a person or even kill them.
Don't get me wrong, it can be brutal but deadly? Perhaps in a perfectly unfortunate scenario, but I doubt it. Enough to incapacitate? Sure, but still it would have to be extremely rare.
I didn’t know that the CH-47, 53, and 46 were all capable of sustained stints in water! I guess it makes a lot more sense now that I think on what they were capable of!
Sorry. I was a crewman in H-46s in the US Navy. We never put tape on the aircraft before practicing water landings.

11:35 I'm not a helicopter pilot, but I'm pretty sure part of what makes hovering near water level, or putting the helicopter on water and then flying again, .. part of what makes it hard is ground effect, which lets you use less power, all else equal. However, ground effect over water would be smaller than over (hard) land, due to water being able to move (slightly) out of the way. That extra capability comes at the cost of, e.g., more training or more risk when doing those kinds of close-to-water helicopter operations. Just, in addition to the extra maintenance and other things you already mentioned, there's also the ground-effect-over-water consideration. I'd imagine there are probably other ways flying a helicopter very close to water is different than in other environments.
IGE isn’t that big of a difference over water vs. land. It’s purely because of nowadays we have more electronics in the pods and it gets pretty old repacking or replacing wheel bearings and doing full corrosion control inspections that takes days. You don’t buy any better capabilities by landing instead of just hovering.

I like watching these because you see the operators in the Zodiacs duck real low upon reboarding like they know that there was somebody who didn't duck that one time
Sling loading an ordinary boat--or a specially designed boat--could work for these purposes.
When it comes time to procure new helicopters, one could be designed with a detachable hull. Some hulls would be for delivering soldiers to land, some hulls for delivering onto water. Hulls could be as simple as a box/raft or as complex as a functional boat or APC or... a box with command equipment.
If the APC idea sounds stupid, it is. I'd settle for light vehicles. But if I wanted an air assault APC I'd have one designed that landed separately from its armor package. Basically, one lift brings the hull and a second lift drops off a box frame that's holding the armor package and that the APC hull can drive into, have the amor or ERA plates bolted on or, if you're fancy, automatically welded on with thermite or something.
Would these be as effective as IFVs? Nope. But nothing air assault or airborne is ever as effective as its armored division counterpart.

Yeah, but all the stuff needed to achieve that adds weight, cost and complexity, and that still wouldn't solve all the issues. Better to change how you do things so you no longer need to land on water to achieve the same results, which is what they've done.

Also, in any battle involving water, this is why the US has the biggest carrier taskforce in the world.
You do want to keep the helos out of salt water if you can help it, but fresh water is another story. You hear reports of helos taking dunks into fresh water lakes. This could be training for emergency landings and not every helo type would try it.
The technology of seaplanes is close to a century old.
With all of the technological know how available today one would think that someone, some where, would be able to design a "Sea Chopper".

Ha! Exactly what I thought! But for real, taking a heli out of service every time it practices a water landing is not efficient for certain. I'm sure they didn't completely seal the bottom for good reason, but seems like they could have re-engineered the hull in the later updates to resolve those issues.
It has to do with the materials that aircraft are made of. Stainless steel would be great, but it is heavy as hell compared to other common metals. Aluminum is the primary metal used in aircraft construction. Magnesium is used where great structural strength is needed, but where weight again, is a critical factor. Both of these metals though, are highly susceptible to corrosion, especially in a salt water environment. I spent 20 years in Chinooks. Did the “forbidden” landings with the SF guys at Bragg from 81-84 (196th AVN Co “Flippers”). Later was stationed out of Barbers Point NAS, HI (B-214th “Hillclimbers”) 89-92. Corrosion control was a constant nightmare. I don’t remember if we did any water landings, but even just being in the ocean spray from hovering required extra maintenance. Every aircraft got a good scrubbing down after mission complete. Miss those days. It was a pain, but it was also fun.

I understand the corrosion issues, I was thinking more about the water intrusion. Though, I guess when used for rapid egress, you actually need it to not float, so that's explain why they didn't go that far.
Probably better to start with a clean sheet design based around composite anyways though if someone was to seriously consider creating a new helicopter for water operations.
You know the real reason that the Coast Guard doesn't land those helicopters on the water any more? They've been retired for 30 years. Also the CH-46 has been retired for about 4 years as of the making of this video, with the MV-22 Osprey completely replacing it.
Fun Fact: For the CH-46 the US Department of State uses them for embassy missions around the world so it’s still in service just not with the military.

We do have new underwater tech that can be attached to the bottom backend of the helicopter, dual water jet engines directly connect to rotor shaft for power with fin acutators that control the thrust while rotating on its 360 axis like the pod drive. Improve the hull material and less holes with more seals and anti-corresion properties... Voila! you got a true sea copter that likes to get more splashes and not worry about issues there. I wonder we could find new bearings design with back up bearings in cast of rotor blade smashing water where bearing will kill itself to save the rotor blades then backup bearing activated to restart rotoring back up for emergency lift.
But are the compromises worth it? You have a bunch of dead weight stuck to the bottom whenever you're not floating in water, and it doesn't really solve the problem that rough waves can be unpredictable and tilt the heli too much. There's not much you can do to prevent a rotor blade spinning at high speed to _not_ get badly damaged from hitting the water. Plus, salt fucking sucks, and anti-corrosion would require even more weight added.
Sounds like a textbook ridiculously complex solution in search of a real problem. Just another defense contractor looking to make a sale any way they can.

A friend of mine is in the Navy. Regarding the safety of the Chinook, he told me that in their "escape from a submerged and inverted vehicle" training, they always use a Chinook as the inverted vehicle. He said there's a reason why it's always a Chinook that's inverted in this training. 🤣
