  • New Albin, IA was the first location where I seen KIDS playing on the train tracks with adults watching.. The Canadian Pacific Railroad Police officer didn't seem very amused as he walked down the train tracks just as The Empress CP 2816 rounded the bend..

    I would have to agree with Lowell about the whistle. When 2816 came through central Minnesota in 2009, I seem to recall it having a more pleasant-sounding whistle. This whistle reminds me of the one on those Chinese QJ steamers. Kids, even young railfans, don't always think about safety around trains (like in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes). I was guilty myself when my uncle and aunt got married back in 1970. After the wedding, I went down to the BN (ex-GN) main line and put my ear on the railhead to listen for a train (I never was able to hear a train by doing that and there was a nearby block signal I could have looked at instead). One of my cousins followed suit. My other aunt was very upset and chewed us out. About ten minutes later, the Griswold crossing signals started flashing their lights, clanging the bell, and rotating their STOP signs. The colorful BN Western Star flew by westbound, doing at least 50 MPH.

    And then that one idjit continuing across the tracks, he didn't even look until he was already standing between the tracks and smack in the locomotives cross-hairs.
    For a moment there I thought the idjit was gonna be forever on video earning a much coveted Darwin Award. Geez.

      Another time with my dad, he was an engineer for amtrack, I was in the captains seat operating between Albany and Schenectady NY, I was around 11 or 12, I see some kids playing around on the side of the tracks, I blow the horn at em, the old turbo liners were quiet and will sneak up on ya, which is what happened, I hesitated to hit the horn thinking they will hear us, Das said blow the horn, so I did, by then we were 70-50 yards and coming at em doing 50. They jumped up startled 😮
      Ran across the tracks to our left, for some reason panicked and ran back across to the right. I seen the last kids Nike swooshes disappear from sight under the hood, That's how close it was. The tracks we were goofing around on as kids were the Albany to Boston branch. One train out at 6 am, one train in at 6 pm. I knew that. These idiots were on the water route to Buffalo with amtrack flying up n down by the hours. Stupid.

    These people doesn't know what a goddam air whistle is, most steam locomotives have air whistles and there where louder then the 1st whistle because the 1st one is quite and not enough steam pressure to get the bell inside the whistle just the blow as loud ad it gets but instead in Canada they had air whistles, the most loudest steam whistle is the Union Pacific Big Boy (4014) and that steam whistle can reach 140 decibels if 4014 ever pass through that crossing where the kids trespassing the engineer had the whistle blown as louder just to get the hell out of the way, but if it's for 2816 they had to blow that air whistle.

No way that's an "electronic whistle", if it were when the engineer or conductor pulled the cord there wouldn't be smoke coming from the whistle behind the smokestack, which everytime the whistle blew, smoke poured out of it and the smokestack, no whistle smoke stopped.
      With an electronic whistle there would be absolutely no reason for smoke to come out of the whistle.
      Honestly, I have NEVER seen a steam locomotive with an electronic whistle. Not saying there can't be one, I've just never seen it.

    • @ralfie8801
      @ralfie8801 Před 28 dny +6

      The adults were away from the rails next to their pickup the whole time, unlike the kids who were in between the rails for a while. It’s OK to watch……from a distance like the adults. The railroad wants people to come and see their heritage trains and be safe doing it. That’s why they have the railroad police keeping people back at these locations.
      UP for example wants people to stay back 25 feet from the rail and UP Police are there to help ensure that happens. People with cameras get stupid trying to get that “special shot” standing on the ends of the ties and then make it really special when the locomotive hits them because they don’t understand the locomotive protrudes 3 - 4 feet out from the rail.

      I didn’t say they were playing chicken or weren’t out of the way in time, just the reason the cop went down there. It didn’t appear to me that he even said anything to the kids and the adults didn’t need any attention, they were outside of the valley ag siding in their parking lot, so there was a whole empty set of tracks between them and the train.
      He wasn’t overly officious either, being a railroad cop, he was doing what the railroad pays him to do - making sure nobody gets hurt or worse when the steam special passes through. I’m surprised he was the only one caught on video, UP would have had 3 or 4 of them making sure the tracks were clear if it were the Big Boy coming through.
