    I saw Dub Dee at the Severn Valley Railway Spring Steam Gala earlier this year, and she was quite the powerhouse! A little sluggish on that line, but does the job very well. I was more impressed by the Coal Tank, considering how much of a fine condition she's in for her age.

    very enjoyable watch, thank you for posting. A word of thanks for the review of the Gaugemaster Combi Controller, I was impressed by the slow running and slow pull away. So I bought one and wow! amazing control slow running without jitters and slow pull-aways are amazing. Even smokey joe performs as if DCC controlled. Brilliant, thanks again.

    You're not half wrong about the soot danger. My friend John & I went to the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways last year while we were on a Study Abroad in Chester (The rest of the students went to tour Conwy & Caernarfon Castles. I like to joke that while they were touring those castles, we were riding the little trains through God's castle). Both times we ended up in the open-sided coaches at the very rear of the train, which were very nice for getting the breeze & getting great shots of the scenery & the train. The problem started on the WHR to Caernarfon. Not long after we started, a bit of soot flew into my eye & it hurt like hell. I tried to wipe it out with my handkerchief (Pro tip: Always have a proper cotton hanky/repurposed hand towel in your pocket), but it was no good. I wanted to buy some water from the concession lady so I could damp it down & try to wipe the soot out that way, but she only came once at the start & then never again (I must admit, I was not impressed with the WHR's service). Finally, I had to go up the train in search of some water. I finally found a nice lady who was willing to give me a splash of her water (she had, like, 5 water bottles in her bag. Don't know why she'd have so many). After that, I was able to get the soot out of my eye & enjoy the rest of the journey.

    90733 is Austerity Loco built by The Vulcan Foundry for the War Department back in World War 2, it spent the latter part of its working career in Poland up until 1977 where it was moved back to the UK for preservation... Just thought id add this in as a guide :)

    Another great video, Will. You waxed quite lyrical about the 8F (or WD Austerity as someone has commented) but I agree that, although the diesels sound great, they don't quite have the magic of the steam locos. I also agree that a camcorder gives better footage than a smart phone or tablet and are much easier to handle than a tablet!!.

    The class 37 will always be my favourite train, we usually get 2 DRS 37's hauling nuke flasks running through Chester going into wales, love the sound at about quart past 6 in the morning when they open the growler up and get her up to speed heading towards flint.

  • @MarmiteCrumpets
    @MarmiteCrumpets Před 9 lety

    Again just to clear up the misunderstanding between Stanier 8F and WD 2-8-0. 90733 is of the latter class which were based mechanically on the 8F but modified for shorter working lives given the constraints of materials availability during the war. Designed by R.A. Riddles and built in 1943 (852 x Stanier 8F built 1935-46). Many were distributed far and wide e.g. Europe, North Africa and Hong Kong.
    Of the 935 built, 733 came into BR in 1948 were numbered 90000-732 in BR use, there was no 90733. The reason this loco is numbered as such is because having found its way to Holland in WW2 it was sold on to Swedish State Railways in 1953. It was repatriated to the UK in 1973 by the KWVR, who appropriately numbered her "next in series" as is the case with Tornado.

    Lovely video of a lovely line, went there in January. The snow just went so well with the gloss black of their 4F that day. Just wondering, would you ever consider coming to the Ribble Steam Railway in Preston, Lancashire? I volunteer there, we're only a small 1 1/2 mile line but we have some very interesting industrial stock as we are an old dock line. DP1 is also here with guided cab tours on Sundays until October. I'd love it if you'd come down one day, possibly for DP1's 60th as we're just running EVERYTHING that can bloody move on that day. So would you ever consider it?
    Once again, lovely video!

  • @kellyashfordtrains2642

    The steamy is not described as an 8F. It was not designed by William Stanier. The engine is a War Department 2-8-0, and my kind of engine to get dirty with. I have a pair of goggles to wear, so I'm a lucky one. How on earth can you love that ugly and stinky box-on-wheels? It chokes me to death. Its fumes choked you, so you can't love it in the same way as we love steam engines. Diesels sometimes break down and never move again, unless a shunter can tow the unreliable machine back on shed. When a steam engine breaks down, it will move to gentle coaxing from the Driver. Unreliable diesels are for non-believers. Electrics have got it all wrong. Steam engines, which are far more reliable, have the power that will pull us along. Diesel fumes are horrid and pollute our clean atmosphere. Smoke, steam and soot are kinder to us. You should have stuck with the steam engine all day long. That unreliable diesel should be on the scrap heap, if you want my opinion. Stick with steam engines. You'll enjoy it a whole lot more, believe me. Happy train riding.
