Hey guys, today, we are going to look at some strange carvings of Veeranarayana Temple. This first carving is a real shocker, it is a large scale model of Lord Buddha. Now, this is an ancient Hindu temple that is about 800 years old. But you can see they have carved Buddha, on the front wall, as a giant statue. This could be shocking to many people today, because they think Hinduism and Buddhism are completely different religions, in fact, people theorize that these 2 religions were fighting against each other. But here, you can this giant carving of Buddha, right in the front of the temple, the same size as the Hindu God Krishna nearby, so the ancient builders had no issues in accepting Buddha as a Hindu God.
Unfortunately, this is completely destroyed by invaders, you can see they disfigured it from top to bottom, and because of this destruction, some experts have even claimed that this is not Buddha, this is some other Hindu deity. But this is Buddha, you can see him in the meditating pose, with clear Hand signals. We can also see him carved in the main statue of this temple, that one is much smaller, but we can clearly identify him as Buddha. Again, I have also shown you that Buddha was carved in another Hindu temple nearby, the Chennakeshava temple also shows Buddha. But this carving is actually a real treasure because the rest of them are smaller statues, and as far as I have seen in this region, this is the only large statue of Buddha carved in a Hindu temple, but it is a shame that it is nearly unrecognizable.
Right next to Buddha, you can see Lord Krishna, and he is playing flute, and every body is mesmerized by his music. Not only humans, but even animals are completely enthralled by his music, but do you notice anything strange? This guy, is wearing a backpack, just like today’s backpack. It is clearly shown that it is a separate bag, but it is strapped to him. This is really fantastic, because we would assume that they started using backpacks may be in the last century, but this is at least 800 years old.
Here is another carving, of a man standing under a tree, this is very confusing, because I don’t fully understand the details, but he is clearly shown with a backpack, and it seems like he is removing the backpack. Now, there is another strange feature in this carving, there is a weird animal hiding in the tree. In this carving you can see a hill, or you can think of it as a giant boulder, with lots of trees and several animals. This boulder is being lifted by Krishna, and you can see snakes come out of the bottom of the rock. This is a fascinating detail, because Snakes are known for hiding under stones.
I remember when I was a child, when I flipped over small stones, I would always find worms, and when I got too excited, and I flipped bigger stones, I would sometimes find snakes, I guess it is always moist and dark under the stones, this is probably an ideal condition for worms and snakes. But this detail shows how observant ancient builders were. Here you can see another snake, it is shown with 5 heads. Did such snakes exist during the time of Krishna? Remember, Krishna is said to have lived about 5000 years ago, so we can only image if such multi-headed snakes actually existed during those times. Today, sometimes they find two-headed snakes, and it makes us wonder if what we see in these carvings is fiction or fact? But here, the story gets more interesting, it is not just a snake, it is a demon in the form of Naga, and here, you can see a woman, begging for mercy. Who is she? She is one of the wives of this Naga, and at this point, Krishna is considering if he should show mercy to the snake, while he is dancing on its head.

Hey Praveen. I'm personally always enthralled to visit Indian temples with carvings. And it gets better when somebody(like temple guides) explains hidden meanings behind them, which would not be known otherwise. You have become like a Pro-Guide to people like me. Thanks a ton. Just wanted to ping some info regarding the video: Buddha is seen carved in many Indian temples and it goes with the mention of him amongst the 10avatars of Vishnu(9th). Kaliya snake on whim Krishna is dancing was then relocated to his island with a promise from Garuda to him and Krishna that he wouldn't cause any harm again to his species. Because the constant trouble from Garuda was what had caused him to leave his native island in the first place. The 8-16-32-64 pattern around Krishna somehow to me hints also towards the Shri Yantra which has association with these numbers and it or it's presiding deity Devi Lalita specifically, is said to be the centre or Origin of Creation according to the Brahmanda Purana. That's it. Thanks a ton again Praveen.

However, some of his disciples, esp the Royal and empowered ones tried to enforce his "Teachings" which was the then Mahayana or Theravadin "Buddhism" on the local Sanatan Dharma following community in India. They even took over the educational Universities under their power to begin with their Rule/ Dictatorship. This is the Fight, Praveen is talking about in the video.

Also buddhist deity imagery show many of them trampling on hindu deities so as to show the buddhas are beyond the devi/devas/what they represent symbolically or just buddhism triumphing over bramhinical hinduism.

Also, if I'm not wrong, Gautam Buddha is considered an avatar of Lord Vishnu as I don't believe Balaram was Vishnu's avatar but Seshnag's. Therefore that clarifies it ❤

The krishna scene is the kaliya daman story . You may refer to Bhagvat Puran for reference. Kaliya was a huge poisonous snake subdued under Yamuna river . His wife was begging for mercy while krishna was killing him by dancing on his head. The tree was the solitary kadamba tree which survived kaliya's poison.
It is a very famous scene which is found in many sculptures depicting krishna's life.

Krishna was not killing the snake. He was making the snake lose its ferocity and subdue its strong ego. After the snake realizes that boy is none other than Paramatma himself, then it falls at his feet and surrenders. This has a spiritual meaning as well where we can lose our strong egos and surrender to the lord by making the lord in our mind dance and subdue our egos. Which means only constant remembrance of the God keeps our ego away that we are not body and we are pure consciousness or Atman.

I think backpacks existed for travelers. Look at images of Fa Hien and Heuen Tsang who travelled to India through the Tibetan desert. If they could have it, others could too. The rock lifted by Krishna is obviously the Govardhan hill. The 5 headed snake is obviously the Kalia. If we see references to elephants in Indian texts, we would believe that elephants were domesticated not less than 5000 years ago. I am delighted to observe that the thin machined rings in the pillars here have survived destruction by invaders unlike other temples. Actually we still have villages where poisonous snakes live freely in the same house and same bed along with humans and children no harm comes to either side. It's just that we have coexisted with snakes in close proximity along with so many other animals. And at the end, I must appreciate your sharp eye for detail and your sense of humour. Keep rolling Praveen. All the best.

The man with the backpack might represent a traveler that decided to stay, and made a large contribution to the temple. Much like the Indian prince Tamo, who became a bodhisattva and at the end of his travels lived out the rest of his life at Shaolin. There are ancient accounts of backpacks. Japanese and Chinese have been using packs on there backs for centuries. A smart traveler would probably wrap their goods and strap them to their back out of necessity. If you walk 10000 leagues you'll put the burden on your back eventually. It's human nature. Perhaps he was a wise Buddha who shared his world knowledge giving praise to Lord Buddha above all and this is why the Buddha statue exists there.

Yes but use logic. Why is Praveen saying how big of a deal it is to have Lord Buddha statue in the Hindu temple? Because that is not common? So the most logical reason is that a person that was Buddhist was involved at that temple specifically, and thus the carving. Also, think why only the Lord Buddha statue was destroyed? Humans create all of the history, our relationships with each other and the events in our lives.

There is an interesting story in the Bhagwata and other Puranas about Shri Krishna lifting the ‘Govardhan Parvat’ or Govardhan Hill when he was only a small child. The story goes like this:
Once, when the elder people of Braj including Nanda Maharaj were planning for the Puja of Lord Indra, Shri Krishna, a child then, questioned them as to why they were doing so. Nanda Maharaj explained to Krishna that this was done every year to please Lord Indra so that he continued to grace the people of Braj by providing rain as and when required. But little Krishna debated that they were farmers and they should only do their duty or ‘Karma’ to the best of their abilities, by concentrating on farming and protecting their cattle, rather than performing pujas or conduct sacrifices like this for any natural phenomenon. Finally convinced by Krishna, the villagers did not perform with the puja.
Furious with the inhabitants of Braj for listening to the little child Krishna and worshipping the Govardhan Hill instead of him, lndra, the King of Heaven, decided to punish them by sending terrible rain clouds to flood the land of Vrindavan. Calling the Samavartaka clouds of devastation, lndra ordered them to lash upon Vrindavan with torrents of rain and thunderstorms and cause extensive floods that would destroy the livelihood of the inhabitants.
As terrible rains and thunderstorms ravaged the land and submerged it under water, the frightened and helpless inhabitants of Vrindavan approached Lord Krishna for help. Krishna, who understood the situation perfectly well, lifted up the entire Govardhan Hill at once with His left hand, and held it up like an umbrella. One by one all the inhabitants of Vrindavan, along with their cows and other household possessions, took shelter under Govardhan Hill. For seven days they stayed under the hill, safe from the terrible rains and surprisingly undisturbed by hunger or thirst. They were also astounded to see the huge Govardhan Hill resting perfectly balanced on Krishna’s little finger.
Stunned and mystified with the order of events, King Indra called back the clouds of devastation, thus stopping the thunderstorms and the rains. The sky became clear again and the sun shone brightly over Vrindavan. Little Krishna asked the inhabitants to return home without any fear, and gently placed the Govardhan Hill back to exactly where it was. All the inhabitants of Braj including Nanda Maharaj, Yasoda and Balarama hailed Krishna and embraced Him with happiness.
This was how the false pride of King Indra was shattered to pieces. He came to Lord Krishna with folded hands and prayed to Him for forgiveness. Shri Krishna, being the Supreme Personality of Godhead, bestowed his grace on Indra and also enlightened him about his ‘Dharma’ and duties.

Another mind opening video. Our temples were places of learning. We should ask students to visit these places and ask them to interpret what they understand of it. Who knows we may get a fresh perspective.

Bro listen it is the statue of jain tirthankara, neminath.....
Not only in jain scriptures but in yajurveda, a Hindu scripture, it is clearly mentioned that neminath ,22nd tirthankara, was the older brother of Krishna ...... both statues carved together proves that this is a statue of jain turthankara....
Because this statue doesn't have clothes like Buddha has..... it is a meditating posture of jain tirthankara.

Hi Praveen, I feel it is Jain teerthankar statue. In Jain books it is said that Lord Krishna and Neminatha teerthankar were cousins. This is what I heard from many people. You can do further finding on it which may help you in decoding it in different view or aspects too.

But bro before 5000 years ago there are no Jainism or Buddhism,, or there are no concept of "ism"... But the Temple built 800 years ago, if there a chance to be a jain Tirthankar, then there would a chance to be a Buddh... But I think He would be Gautam Buddha, because he is the 9th Avatar of Lord Vishnu after Shri krishna

@@thesentry1434 no sir jainsim is a foreign name..... and Buddha came in the period of lord Mahavir... but before that shraman sanskriti was the older name and the real name in jainism....
According to ASI, in Indus Valley civilization, it is clearly proved that there were ancient jain statues and even outside India....
Jainism is extremely Old and perhaps the first shraman sanskriti with its first champion of non violence lord rishabhdev which came much before 5000 years ago...
And not only in jain scriptures but in Buddhist scriptures and rigveda, it is clearly mentioned.....
Shraman sanskriti was the oldest civilizations and religion ever existed but Hinduism so called in ancient times as BRAHAMAN SANSKRITI CAME AT THE PERIOD OF THIRD TIRHTHANKAR LORD SAMBHAVNATH ,
IT IS GIVEN IN RIGVEDA TOOO...
BUDDHISM IS A VERY NEW AND A SMALL CONCEPT AND YOU CAN EVEN SAY THAT IT IS JUST A SMALLL CONCEPY OF JAINSIM BUT JAINISMOR SHRAMAN SANSKIRITI WAS MUCH MUCH OLDER, ANCIENT FILLED WITH SCIENTIFIC LOGICS OF ETERNAL HAPPINESS OF EACH AND EVERY SOUL
DESPITE OF THE DIFEERNECE OF ANY CASTE... TO ATTAIN SALVATION .....
SO IT IS A JAIN TEMPLE.
AND NEVER EVER MIX IT UP WITH HINDUSIM...... BECUASE THIS NAME WAS GIVEN BY PERSIAN INVADERS

@@kushaljain6504 bro I know Jainism is much older, the Jain term has transformed from Dhyan,, The Jain is a foreign name of course, but the religion or ideology is Indian,, and I'll be okay if the Jain "mat" is older, no problem, because this is the part of Sanatana Dharma, and Hindu Dharma itself is a Sanatana dharma, then whatever the Temple be called Jain Temple or Hindu Temple, it doesn't matter
