I think this is because the team managers rate the support performance based on vision control and if the support doesnt places enough wards they'd be 'underperforming'.
main sups can't get over season 3 instincts of just burning all their money on wards and never actually building items
No kidding you could probably play a competitive game as "ward clearer" instead of support and you'd end up getting more gold than your adc.
Imagine getting yourself behind 150g every back on control wards only to use them as worse stealth wards

In the LCS finals huhi spent 975 gold on control wards, I'd imagine it's a similar situation in LCK too

Then I guess he never got to witness that pain, and admittedly neither did I, but anyone watching vods of games from before Sightstone was introduced can see how painful it was to play support, basically akin to what LS is now malding over.

They haven't. The big "LS unprofessional" story out of c9 is him asking his sub-coaches to count control wards live in a game and them ignoring him.
