This video is In response to the questions about grading ancient coins and what the future of the ancient coin market looks like. Hint: ancient coins are awesome !
Thanks for the response. I mostly collect US coins. However, I'm a huge ancient history buff. I love the Egyptians and Romans. I want to branch into collecting Roman coins. By "Roman" I meant both Classical Rome and Byzantine. The early Roman silver coins such as Denarius and Antonianus are quite affordable. Few people knew that the Roman Empire survived during Medieval times. The Roman Empire was divided into Western and Eastern halves. The Western Empire was conquered by barbarians. The Eastern Empire survived and thrived during Medieval times. The Eastern Roman Empire was also called the Byzantine Empire. I believe every Roman coin collection should include some Byzantine coins. The Byzantine gold Solidus are beautiful and relatively affordable.
Go for it! You'll love collecting those coins. Heritage auction house has weekly ancient auctions HA.com I'm also a fan of CNG . Classical Numismatic Group ... but they mostly sell raw !!!
I get a kick out of slabs. Saddens me a bit when I read about people breaking them out. they say they want to hold them. I like certain information on the slabs. Sometimes I have to look a long time to find that information. I figure the one they broke out if it’s a coin I want, it probably had the information I wanted. I see plenty of coins that are not slabbed and I would say many times are cheaper. I just have to wonder why they pay the premium to get a slap coin to break it out. Doesn’t make sense to me. I have some I can hold, I have some that are slabs. To me it’s like collecting two different styles. I show and tell my coins. Three times they have been dropped and everybody panicked like they weren’t going to find it. And one time, I sort of thought it was gone. when you show slabs it’s a little harder to do that. What I don’t understand and the reason I watched this video. I was hoping you might comment on it. I wish they did use the Sheldon scale. I found two coins both labeled VG. They were worlds apart. The only thing I can figure is one of the guys must’ve been drunk. That’s how much difference there was. I posted a picture of both of them in one of the Facebook groups asking how could these both be very good. Then some guy jumped all over me about buying coins because of the grade. My post wasn’t about the grade. My post was about NGC and how they can be so vastly different. One of them should’ve been G and the other VG. Then I made a comment well, for that grade there is a 10 point difference and maybe one is at the bottom and one is at the top. Problem is they don’t use the scale. I think they need to be a little more consistent in grading their ancients. I have found a couple more since that post that The higher graded coin is just atrocious by comparison. I have yet to purchase a coin because of the grade. I pick the one I like the looks of in the price range I can afford. It’s just weird when I’m holding a coin that’s F and I see one that’s VF+, and I don’t think it is as nice as the one I have. I don’t purchase the coin by the grade, but I do look at it as It is a help
Ancients have gone up a lot since this vid was uploaded. Covid made it more popular. I also suspect buying is tied to the stock market. People with a lot of discretionary funds are often investors. If they make big gains on stocks, they’ll snatch up more coins.
great videos, i have a question please, ive got a good collection of coins, especialy ancients, however i dont have any slabbed, i was thinking of getting my listers head silver unit from celtic times slabbed, just wondering how much it costs to get 1 coin done? im in the uk. thanks
I collect bible-themed ancients - related to Jesus' (widow's mite, tribute penny, thirty pieces of silver), minted by specific persons mentioned in the bible (Pontius Pilate, Harod), coins of specific states or cities (Corinth, Tarsus, Smyrna), minted by specific emperors (Tiberius, Augustus, Nero, Constantine), etc. I prefer slabs, even my ungraded coins I have in slab-like holders.
Do you collect any Byzantine coins not directly in the Bible but they have some of the earliest depictions of Jesus. I have a few windows mites as well

I can't be bothered with slabs on my coins
Understood!
Do they not guarantee authenticity because there are fakes/replicas out there that can look perfectly genuine?
I do both raw and slabs they have disadvantages and advantages

Usually you'll spend about $40 to get a coin graded. But that can vary depending on the value of the coin and how many you send in at one time.
Can you post them by mail offshore or you need proper export license?

ANACS for ancients
Hey how do you even send them coins to grade? It seems kinda complicated.
hi ! i have a Greek island of Crete coin maybe back in 5th and 6th centuries , what is your recommendations to getting it authenticated ?
Dude WTF the title of video is how ancient coins are graded, this guy talks a lot but says almost nothing
The point of the video was not to teach you how to grade ancients- it was to show new collectors how NGC grades them.
