Freddie Mercury said some time later that he was only at about 70% strength because of his health. He took 3-4 shots of vodka and went out on the stage. Queen wasn't originally scheduled to play that day; they were added after the event tickets had already been sold. They also didn't want to perform like every other artist or band. Others were only interested in promoting their latest hits or albums. Queen decided to do things a bit differently, which is why they played a lot of older (more familiar) stuff of theirs, except Hammer To Fall. It also explains the simplicity of the stage setup, the lights, and even the way they dressed. They didn't want the performance to be about being flamboyant; they wanted it to be all about the music. The next act to go on stage, after Queen, was the legendary David Bowie. It's noted that as he passed by Queen on his way to the stage, he was upset at how well they had been received by the crowd, and he reportedly said "How the f**k am I supposed to follow that?!?!" Queen had just owned the crowd (over 100,000 standing room only) for over 21 minutes, and in doing so, they set the standard for how a music performance was supposed to be done, and all the other acts had to scramble to try to match their intensity.

Queen is a British rock band that was formed in 1970 and was comprised of:
Freddie Mercury - Lead vocals and piano
Roger Taylor - Drummer and vocals
Brian May - Lead guitar and vocals
    John Deacon - Bass guitar
Queen has released 15 studio albums, 10 live albums, 16 compilation albums, two soundtrack albums, 2 extended plays, 73 singles, and seven promotional singles.
Live Aid was a duel-venue concert held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London (audience of 72,000) and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia (audience of 90,000) that was connected and broadcast over 13 satellites worldwide to an audience of over 1.9 Billion. The purpose of the concert was to raise money to aid Ethiopia which was suffering from 2-year drought.
There were 75+ acts, each allotted a 20-minute slot to perform. The UK line-up included Status Quo,, David Bowie, Elton John, Wham!, Sting, U2, The Who, Paul McCartney, and Bob Geldof with his band The Boomtown Rats. The US bill included Madonna, Eric Clapton, Duran Duran, Mick Jagger, Paul Simon, Led Zeppelin, and Tom Petty. Phil Collins played in both London and then caught the Concord Supersonic Jet and flew to perform again in Philly.
Live Aid did not have a Queen audience. All of the tickets to Wembley were sold before Queen was announced to be part of the venue. At this time, Queen was considered to be an old band (they had been performing since 1971.) Those in the audience came to see groups like U2 and Wham!
Also, the Live Aid at Wembley concert began at 12:00 London time (the Philly concert began 5 hours later), so the audience had been there in the sun and heat for nearly 7 hours by the time Queen performed.
Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Freddie’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star.

    Queen's playlist was:
    1. Bohemian Rhapsody (just the ballad and guitar portion)
    2. Radio Ga Ga (the song that inspired Lady Ga Ga's name)
    3. Freddie's Call and Response
    4. Hammer to Fall

Absolutely phenomenal performance from the best front man of a band ever, LiveAid 1985 a charity concert to raise funds for a terrible famine in Ethiopia, the live concert was twinned with a concert in Philadelphia USA , 72,000 crowd at Wembley Stadium UK, and 92,000 in the crowd Philadelphia USA , all the best artist in the world performing at the concerts , each artist had around 22 minutes to perform, Queen came on stage and with their phenomenal flamboyant performance stole the show from any other performer, they were by far the best on the day, although Freddie was advised not to perform by his doctor due to a throat infection, Freddie was determined to perform, and the rest is history, Queen as a band always gelling perfectly they were all amazing musicians, and each member of the band have written No1 hits,I was so fortunate to be able to attend the LiveAid concert and have seen Queens live concerts on several occasions throughout their career, I also attended Freddie’s last live performance concert ever at Knebworth Park United Kingdom, the crowd was around 140 thousand or more, A Phenomenal British band with a huge catalog of amazing songs, great reaction thanks!

Usually a band has two guitarists - one on rhythm and one lead guitar. But Brian May achieves both with his prized "red special" he made with his dad. John Deacon on bass with Roger Taylor on drums hold the beat. The more you listen, you will hear Roger's vocals and John's wild bass lines. If you listen to their 70s music, you'll get another surprise. Try COLD STONE CRAZY and LIAR, both LIVE at the Rainbow, 1974.

The reason you see so many people in attendance at these older concerts is because back then music was for everyone. Anyone from teenagers to adults could afford to go for 5 to 15 dollars depending on show.

Also nothing was sectioned off for health and safety standards to avoid a potential crowd crush like they do now. There were more bodies floating around that stadium than allowed today. Plus every single one of them was THERE in the moment with no phone distractions. So the energy was intense. Totally different vibe to what passes for a concert experience today.

i grew up with Queen music, I remember when I was a teenager I did not have a room on my own my brother sometimes allowed me to be in his room when he was out for an evening and we had an old record player, I was listening to some queen music ( probably an greatest hits album) with the hits from the 70s to the early 80s. You know every song is different. they all wrote songs. They had controvers songs like fat bottommend girls, or bycicle race ( a music video you could probably not do today).I think they made more than 15 albums over the years. There is a good documentary called These are the days of our lives, if you want to know more about their history. Freddie, born as Farag Bulsara died in 91 of aids. These are the days of our lives was also the last music video of them together, and it seems like he is saying good bye in a very sweet and loving way to his fans. it is nice seeing that young people today still appreciate this good music

Queen stole the show! Nobody wanted to go after them! There were 72,000 in attendance and 1.9 billion people worldwide watching this in the biggest satellite link-up in history to that point in time. Interesting fact a lot of people don't know is that Freddie's doctor told him NOT to perform that day as he risked injuring his already strained vocal chords to the point of never being the same again. Freddie, ever the professional, ever the performer, wouldn't think of letting the crowd down. So that is Freddie singing on an extremely bad day! This is known as the "20 minutes that changed music forever"! Enjoy your journey into Queen world! And yes, Freddie does not dance, he struts and poses! If you haven't already reacted to "Somebody to Love", Live 1981 Montreal I highly recommend "giving it a go" as they say in England! Enjoy and appreciate what your senses are telling you, remembering that everything is the way it was done that day, not later auto-tuned and pitch-corrected, those technologies did not exist then and I think all us music lovers wish it had NEVER been invented!

  • @sherryheim5504
    @sherryheim5504 Před 3 měsíci +12

Freddie was the first to admit that he was not a dancer but he certainly puts out some attitude with his movements across the stage. This is the old Wembley Stadium in London, England and the crowd on that day was 72,000 though I have heard 80,000 as well because supposedly 72,000 is for people seated on the field not standing but for the sake of argument I would just go with 72,000 which was capacity for the stadium. Set list: Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio Ga-Ga, Ay-OH (call and response), Hammer To Fall, Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Brian plays three different guitars in this song), We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. So far, this looks like the copy of this concert that cuts off at the end which really breaks the rhythm of the show but if nobody told you which copy to select, you would have no way of knowing ahead. I hope that this is not the one that cuts off but if so, know that we (Queen Army) all understand it is not your fault. Brian May is the guitarist. He built that guitar (The Red Special) with his dad when he was a teen and still uses it almost exclusively and always on stage. He was also Knighted by King Charles and holds a PhD in Astrophysics so he is no Dr. Sir Brian Harold May, PhD, CBE. (and a few other letters after his name. John Deacon is the Bass Player and he built a special amplifier out of junk he found in a dumpster. That amp known as the Deacy Amp (pronounced (dee-key amp) when used with Brian's guitar, it enables him to create the sounds of horns and strings with his guitar. For 50 years people have been trying to duplicate that amp and so far, nobody has, though somebody is now very close according to Brian. John has an advanced Degree in Electronics. Roger Taylor is the drummer. He has a degree in Biology and ended up leaving Dental School when Queen started touring. Freddie has a degree in Design, Fashion and Advertising. This is no garage band, each of these guys are brilliant, Brainiacs all of them. What was coming up at the end was Queen's contribution to the encore of the whole concert. Brian came out with an acoustic guitar and he and Freddie performed a song that they wrote together called Is This The World We Created. Though they wrote it for an album the song fit right in with the theme of this concert which was Aid for the starving people in Africa.

Live Aid was set as two simultaneous performances, one for an audience of 72,000 people at Wembley Stadium in London and 89,000 people at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. It was broadcast in over 100 different countries. An estimated 1.9 billion people were said to have watched Live Aid in 1985. It went down as the largest televised live concert in history, and Queen stole the show. If only Freddie were still here today....arguably the greatest frontman of all time!
It raised over £114m ($140m) for famine relief, brought the world's attention to Ethiopia's devastating food shortages and undoubtedly saved thousands from death. A truly historical event!
    Loved the reaction x

Sorry, just found you; so, I’m late to the Comment Section! I’m a 66 y/o Glamma. You seem to enjoy the background of things. And, I’m a Trivia sponge, so here goes: They had just completed a Tour a month b4. So, they went & rented a Stadium to practice the performance. He ended up with a Throat Infection & the Doctor highly recommended he not do it bc he might lose his musical ability. He said no! Can you tell he had a severe throat infection? Most people think he was drinking booze from the cups bc on the piano. He’s drinking Honey & Tea. His command of the Audience was more than coincidence it was miraculous. Considering there were so many people there the sound was getting absorbed through them. So the people @ the back we’re following his hand gestures bc the actual sound hadn’t even reached them b4 the next sound was coming @ them. Go back & watch what his hands are doing & what the Audience is doing. NEXT: Radio Gaga is celebrating Radio bc M-TV is just getting started. LADY GAGA was a huge Freddie Fam growing up, so That was where she came up with HER STAGE NAME! You have to listen to the words to really understand the meaning. Most of us didn’t have a clue what a Band looked like unless we saw them in Person!
NEXT-MICROPHONE. At sometime along the way a Microphone Stand broke, so that was the only spilt second solution they could come up with. He realized the freedom he had to move, dance, & engage the Audience.
NEXT MICHAEL JACKSON & ELVIS CONNECTION on Song THING CALLED LOVE: It was written as his homage to Elvis-Freddie was a big fan. But, he just wasn’t sure about the song bc he didn’t want to taint Elvis. SO, he played it for Michael J. (Yes, they were friends!). And Michael told him he HAD TO, he said “Freddie, you have to”! (Can’t you just see that!?).
NEXT FREDDIE’s VOICE. HE HAD 4 extra teeth so that’s the reason he had such an overbite. He had the ability to naturally flow from Octave to Octave. It was a natural progression, for him.
SCIENTIFICALLY: Test were done on his Voice. He was able to use his Throat muscles on either side of his vocal cords. Which is normally seen in some Opera Singers. His Vocal Range was from Low Bass F, to High Soprano F! They were extremely surprised to find out that he could go from about 92Hz to 784Hz, effortlessly! See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW:
nyone who has listened to a Queen track knows that Freddie has a unique ability that still has not been truly replicated since. His ability to blend highs, lows and mid range notes cohesively and with immense precision. This skill was due to the fact that Freddie was able to create faster vibrato and harmonics than any other singer at the time. Not only this, he was able to shift through registers effortlessly. Although he naturally held a baritone voice, he primarily sang as a tenor and of course had no problem then shifting into soprano parts. One study on Freddie’s vocal range even confirmed that he was able to vary from about 92.2 Hz to 784 Hz, meaning he was reliably able to hit notes from the booming low of F#2 to the high pitch G5 - that covers a full three octaves! 25:41
I’m sorry to take up your Valuable Time, and I thank you. You need anymore Trivia I’m your G’Ma go to. My Brain is full, especially with music, & believe it or not Sports! I watched a lot a “first reactions” on this particular Concert. You seemed to be the one most amazed, & truly wanting to know EVERYTHING you could find out about this. As you can tell I’m looking for a true musical aficionado. Unlucky for you, I have to say that is you!

This is considered by many to be the greatest live set of all time. Also, Freddie Mercury intentionally made flamboyant gestures so that people in the back could experience the show as if they were closer. He was very aware that not everyone could sit up front and see - so he made sure they could see him. Queen is considered one of the best, if not THE best stadium bands of all time.
