Strider blew my mind when it first came to the arcade. The character and sword movement was so awesome. And when you have things like the gravity reversal stuff it was just crazy. It felt like one part ninja, one part light saber wielding Jedi.
That's exactly what I thought too
First played Strider in 88 on the Boardwalk in Maryland. To me at the time I thought it was the pinnacle of what a video game could be. Thanks for bringing back good times. As usual.
Absolutely, thanks for watching
I rented it for a Genesis I borrowed from a friend and I couldn't believe what I was seeing, and the music blew my mind
@@PlasticCogLiquid It was the first game I got on the Genesis and the only game I had for a while. Played the hell outta it.
88? Wasn't Strider arcade released in March of '89?
@@echelon2k8 Honestly I don't remember what year it was. It was the first summer that it was in arcades. Patman said 88 in the vid so I went with that.
Long-time fan/sub. So glad you enjoyed my Strider (2014). It really was a labor of love. Back when the original Strider arcade came out, I fell in love and wrote into my "Videogame Developer Bucket List - Make a Strider-like game." Fast-forward to 2014 and I got to mark that off my bucket list! So glad you had fun with it!
Excellent, Your game was absolutely fantastic and really capture the spirit of the original. Thanks for being a subscriber !
Bulshit! You the creator?
@@gjergjaurelius9798 Google is your friend, Mr. Bullshit. Try using it, "Tony Barnes Strider" or "Tony Barnes Game Designer" or "Tony Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award Winner". You'll be amazed instead of just saying, "bullshit". ;)
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries thank you for putting out quality videos for years.
Love strider 2014 .
This was my GAME‼️I could beat it with one quarter. I also had both the NES and Genesis versions. I liked the NES even if it wasn’t the same as the arcade. Great video! HAPPY LITTLE GAMES‼️🤣🤣🤣👍🏽
Yep, I was the same, I could beat this game in the arcade really quick. I only had the genesis version, but used to play it daily.
@@rgm4646 Strider was made for speedruns!😎👍🏽
NES Strider is seriously underrated 👍. The game got the Bionic Commando treatment, which I appreciated. It's just not as polished or visually impressive.
@@TexasHollowEarth 💯
Loved NES Strider
Those are some amazing graphics for 1989! Don't know why I never encountered this one in my old arcade days. I only know Strider from the Marvel vs Capcom games.
It wasn't as widespread as some of Capcom's other titles where I grew up
I loved Strider in the arcades and the Sega Genesis port...was simply jaw dropping. It was damn near arcade perfect with very little loss in quality. Strider coupled with Ghouls n' Ghosts and Forgotten Worlds showed the gaming world what a powerhouse the Sega Genesis truly was. When they said the Genesis was for arcade hits they weren't messing around.
I would add Golden Axe to that list.
Sega had some of the best arcade games back in the day.
Absolutely, they were all good conversions
I had a Japanese import of strider for my megadrive when it was first released and I still rate it in my top 10 games of all time
It's a really good conversion
A friend of mine was a massive fan of Strider. I just shared this video with him. I actually witnessed him beat the Sega Genesis version live and in person! The NES version makes me think of a cousin of mine when we were kids and that was the game he picked for my aunt to buy him for his birthday. Great memories, great music, and another great PatmanQC video! Be safe out there, BROTHER!
Thanks a lot, and thanks for sharing
God bless you for covering this game. I remember first playing this after school in the late 80s. This was one of the games that pulled me back into console gaming back then. I didn't hesitate getting Strider 2 for my Playstation One and the rebooted PS4 masterpiece. My all-time favorite video game character.
The Genesis version was great.
One of my favorite games on the system.
Yes it was
The absence of strider hiryu in marvel vs capcom 3 caused an uproar amongst the fighting game community. This was later fixed in ultimate marvel vs capcom 3. It added 6 more characters to each side, strider hiryu was 1 of them
My brother and I purchased this for Genesis when it came out. We were blown away by the arcade quality of the port and loved the game.
Zeku, which is the first Strider, is in SFV. He would later be responsible for Strider Hiryu. You can tell Zeku is a strider by choosing his alternate costume. It's quite amazing to see that the Strider universe is canon with the Street Fighter universe.
Strider, another one of my favorites in arcade universe..and the character Strider Hiryu is among my list of favorite Capcom Characters of all time..along with Captain Commando, Ryu (Street Fighter), Megaman and others..he is most notable for his appearance in Marvel vs. Capcom Series, Thank You so much for another Retrotastic videos, Mr. Patman..I'm Sure more videos will coming right up soon..it's Arcade History time for me..so prepared for my snacks and my Coca-Cola..and ready to relax 😊👍...wished to see a history of more SNK 80's arcade games besides Ikari Warriors
You must be thrilled he's in Street Fighter
@@angrytheclown801 He is?..as a guest character?
@@mr.multiverse7686 He has a cameo in Street Fighter Alpha 2's Ken Stage.
@@echelon2k8 Oh Thanks..I Heard That Before..along with other characters like Morrigan and Lt. Linn Kurosawa
There is a character Zeku in Street Fighter 5 who is seemingly the first Strider, or at least one of the major influences on the creation of them. He even proposes calling his fighting style Striders in his ending and has an outfit very similar to Hiryu's when in his younger form.
Edit: No sword though he does have kick animations that mimic the blade, a bird that drops bombs, and instead of a dog/wolf a ferret that advances across the screen then does a very cute flying kick.
I was quite surprised to learn Tiertex developed the Master System version of the game. In fact Sega hired them a few times, they did MERCS for them too.
Their ports weren't too bad actually.
One of my favorite games to 1CC in the arcade and on MAME years ago. Great music, graphics, and levels. A classic.
Excellent, kudos
The arcade version of Strider is one of my absolute favorite games ever; and I could finish it in one credit.
Absolutely stunning concept, visuals, sfx and music.
Wasn't too impressed with Strider 2 though. I guess for me it's the change to 3D style, although the gameplay is decent enough.
Oh, another Capcom classic that I absolutely love is "Willow". Maybe in the future you could find some time to cover this :p
I too could complete on 1 or 2 quarters max after lots of practice... Willow on the other hand... 😆 🤣
@@dennismcdonald2607 Yeah it did take a lot of practice. The last stage is difficult indeed.
Willow; I can still finish this in one credit. Easy once you know how ;-)
Holy moly, that is excellent!
If you weren't too impressed with Strider 2, you should try Strider from 2014 if you haven't already. Best Strider since the original.
I'm more shocked that *Strider 2* wasn't ported to the Dreamcast they both came out around the same year .
the Strider reboot was a really great looking action metroidvania, good stuff!! Got strider 1+2 on sale years ago digital on the PS3 too. Great games!
Space Ninja Strider is one the most beautiful arcade games in the late 80's the soundtrack was amazing and outstanding ♥️
Another beloved classic. Great work Patman
Thank you kindly!
Strider 2 (the Capcom one) is awesome and sooo underrated!
I agree
Strider returns on genesis you mean?
@@segaforce8310 nope, not this one.
I remember being impressed with appearance and game play of Strider, which seemed like a quantum leap in technology at the time to me.
Yes, everything was a leap forward
I LOVED this game and went broke many times at the arcade because of this one. I also had the NES version and beat it. Never beat the arcade, but was excited when someone else did. A really Happy Little Game!!
Galloping Ghost Arcade was the first place I have seen a Strider cabinet, and also its spiritual successor, which is called Cannon Dancer in Japan and Osman outside Japan. The story goes that Kouichi Yotsui had wanted to make another Strider game, but Capcom was not interested at the time, so during Yotsui’s time at Mitchell Corporation, he and some other former Capcom staff made Osman/Cannon Dancer as sort of an unofficial sequel to Strider. Most of the play mechanics from the original game are there, except that Kirin, the main character, has no weapon, and instead uses kicking as his main form of offense. I got to play Osman when Galloping Ghost unveiled it as their Monday mystery game on June 11, 2018, and nowadays anyone can play it, since it got ported to the PS4, PS5 and Switch in 2022. Strictly Limited Games has physical copies for all 3 platforms. Great video as always!
I recall seeing strIDER at galloping ghost but not too sure about CanNon dancer As there is so much to see. Excellent info by the way, thank you.
At 25:42 you could hear the legendary wrestler, Lord Alfred Hayes advertising Nintendo games on those Saturday morning wrestling shows! Pat, I think you can recognize that voice too being a fan of wrestling back in those days as I am!
Same here! I recognized it right away.
Yes it was, good ears
Soon as I sober up I'll be ready to watch another great video from the Pac dude😎
LOL, thanks
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries no, thank you Pac baby🤟
Strider is one of the coolest video game protagonists. A badass ninja with a badass name.
Another great video, Pat. Strider is one of my favourite games on the Sega Mega Drive. The music and gameplay are just so good. 👍
Thanks a lot, yes the mega drive version is really well done
Strider and the Sequel (The 2000 PS1 game) are my favorite action arcade games and I still adore them to this day. I'm glad that you would do a documentary on one of my favorite games period.
Excellent, hope you enjoyed it
The 2014 game is awesome too
Oh right I heard about it and watched a lot of Gameplay of it... Too bad I never came across into getting it
@@PlasticCogLiquid Yes it is, I show it in the video as well
Yes, yes and more yes ! Awesome video Patmanqc! Strider was one of my favorites. I’m glad I grew up with arcades in the 80s and 90s .
Thanks, I hope you enjoyed it
I knew Strider until 1991, some friends from across the block had it, I borrowed for the weekend and oh man, loved it, one of my favorite games at that time, then I got the Genesis version and can't stop playing it. What a great days, childhood at its best, thank you for this 🙏
Once again, another definite review on a franchise! 👏🏻
My memory of Strider was the NES game where I remember my mom rented just at the tail end of my summer vacation. I remember being so nervous of going back to school that I remember never wanting to stop playing that game because it meant I had to go back to school. I even played it the morning I had to finally leave. Good times.
Excellent, thank you for sharing
Good video! Strider is a game icon!
I wish you had mentionned Cannon Dancer, a 1996 spiritual sequel to Strider and also designed by
Kouichi Yotsui.
Any fan of Strider should give Connon Dancer a try!
Agree!
It wasn't an official part of the franchise, thanks though
I remember being blown away by how good the graphics were on the Genesis / Mega Drive version. It’s almost arcade perfect, which was rare at the time. I enjoyed your video my friend. 👍
Yes, it really showed off what the Genesis could do early on. Glad you enjoyed it, thanks
The arcade Strider Hiryu remains one of the very best games I have ever played. It was one of the few titles that convinced me that I had to own a Sega Genesis.
My introduction to this game was the NES version and instantly got hooked on, the when I got my hands on the Genesis version I fell in love with all related to Strider, thank you for uploading this, good job as always.
The music in Strider is magical. Really Iconic for me.
I agree, the whole experience is magical in my opinion
Ahh Strider, a MAGNIFICENT game I first saw in a Pizza shop in NYC. It looked and played like something from the future compared to the cabinets next to it. I also remember it being super expensive as a Genesis cartridge as well. I was always renting it because of that lol.
Yes, apparently it cost around $75-$80 for the Genesis when it first came out
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Bingo! $79.99 in NYC.
I remember my sister bought me this game from Babagges for Christmas… joint was $75 on Genesis lol
LOL
Phantasy Star 3 was another Genesis game that cost $75 because of how 'big' it was. Now you can get a 256 gig micro SD card for less than $30.
I've been binge-watching your documentaries. All excellent, Well done and many thanks for the entertainment!
Thanks. Strider is a very unique game, with that overpowering sword slash trademark, and the unique grappling abilities of the hero, as well as the often intentionally very bizarre enemies, like the seated Members turning into a Centipede. Strange but good game. Thanks.
Strider soundtrack is and always be epic.
Great video! Strider is one of my all time favorites!
My favorite video game ninja gets the PatmanQC treatment. Excellent work as always. Thank you very much!
Thanks a lot, Glad you enjoyed it
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries You always bring us the best stuff. Just wanted to let you know how great your show is.
You absolutely made my day with this video as Strider is one of my all time favourite games ever, so thank you!
I was also today years old when I learned about the PS4 game, which I intend to get because it looks fantastic. Capcom need to consider a MetroidVania style Strider game in the future. That would work really well with this franchise, I think.
Anyway thanks again for the fantastic content and covering a personal favourite! 😊😊👍
Excellent, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thanks
I hope you have a awesome, stress-free weekend, Patman!
Thanks, I hope you are as well
I remember playing Strider for the first time at my local 7 Eleven back in 1990 when I was 10 yrs old! When he came off of the hang glider and started swinging his sword I knew I had an instinct classic on hands! Had it for the Sega Genesis too! One of all time favs!
I saved up for the Genesis version, but didn't know it was an arcade game at all until years later! Out of all of the home versions, the Genesis seems to be the most faithful, despite the removal of animation frames and sprite flicker. I remember actually feeling a falling sensation when making a massive jump with the beautiful mountainous backdrop!
I can't believe I remember when this game came out. I was 6 and obsessed with it.
I also remember there being different revisions of the game with added music...or missing music was properly placed in later versions of the arcade. I really should just look it up.
Great documentary. I never knew about an arcade Strider 2.
Worth noting that Yotsui left Capcom and produced Osman/Cannon Dancer, a parody of Strider with stunning visuals, similar gameplay and even more insane bosses. It is well worth checking out.
Will watch out for your vids in the future.
Thank you. The reason I left the other game out of the list was because it was not an official part of the Strider franchise. I have heard good things about it though
Great work as usual! Worth mentioning additionally, perhaps, is the amazing spiritual successor "Osman", produced by ex-Capcom employees. Also of note is the Street Fighter V character "Zeku" who is definitely an homage to Strider Hiryu.
Thank you, I didn't mention the other game because it wasn't actually part of the series
This game can be found in the Arcade 1UP cabinet of FINAL FIGHT along with 1942 and GHOSTS AND GOBLINS! Another great video from the BEST CZcamsR EVER!!!!
Thanks, I wasn't aware of that
The NES version is included on the GBA Capcom Mini Mix. A fantastic cart to buy, if only because, realistically, it’s the only way you’ll ever own a physical copy of Mighty Final Fight.
Thanks for the info
When I first saw this in the arcade I couldn't believe what I was seeing, it was so impressive.
A very enjoyable summary of the history; thank you!
Although I was already a bit of an arcade game addict when Strider came out, I didn't really have access to a lot of variety, or I just didn't know where to go to find new games where I lived (London UK), so I knew nothing about the game. It didn't appear in my circles until a friend of mine got the game for the sega Megadrive.
It quickly became my favourite game, AND favourite game OST. Hats off to the composer of the tracks; for me the soundtrack is on par with the Streets of Rage soundtracks, but Strider is the winner out of the two for me. Played the thing to death back then, and still watch gameplay from time to time nowadays.
Still rock my Strider game for the NES and still remember my parents got it for me like it was yesterday at Electronic Boutique. The arcade game was crazy fun during the late 80's action era along with Bionic Commando and others!!
Finally you are covering one of my favorite arcade game. Thank you amigo.
Excellent, thanks for watching
Thank you sir, my childhood right here!
My pleasure!Thanks for watching
Another fantastic video, Patman. Thanks for uploading!
Glad you enjoyed it!
One of my all time favourites, completed it with 1 credit back in the days in the Westend of London as a teen in the late 80's. We had the best Music, Movies and Arcades. Love live the 80's. AAA Classic Xxxxx
Am I disappointed that I never got to play this game back in the day…NOT when you have PatmanQC to fill me in on the history of another unique game.
How nice of you to say, thanks
Great history of Strider from Arcade to Home computers. Slight edit though - Strider 2014 is on Xbox One digitally along with the others mentioned as I have it. It's a great game.
Capcom was ruling hard back then... Ghouls and Ghosts, Forgotten World, Strider... all these games were visually and musically stunning and showcased so much character and creativity.
I could not agree more
This video prompted me to look up Junko Tamiya (composer), which led me to the work called "Snow in Savanna", which can be found on CZcams. This seems to have been one of the prototype tracks from which the majority of the arcade game's (amazing, challenging and weird) soundtrack was developed. I actually used to have this track on tape, way back in the 90s.
Thanks, I will check it out
much love Hiruy Strider
you will always be my personal dearest Hero from the classic Capcom Universe
aside Bionic commando and now of course Resident evil, Devil may cry etc
thank you for the Strider homage for the video
Saw this game all the time at the bowling alley as a kid, but I never played it. Was always spending all my quarters on the WWF Superstars cab right next to it.
One of the best arcade games of all time and one of the coolest characters Capcom ever created.
I agree
Very great memories here. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I know I mentioned it before but if you ever do TWIN TIGERS or RAD ACTION arcade game reviews I know you can find great pics of these games in SAVED BYTHE BELL THE COLLEGE YEARS with Mario Lopez Dustin Diamond etc in the picture.
One thing that was left off of this video and everyone might want to know, is there was a an error with the original arcade board where the same music would play over and over again once you get halfway through the game. Game. Was corrected with a revision of the roms. But you would still hear the same music replay over and over again on ports as they thought when they made the ports that this was correct.
Wasn't aware of this, thank you
This was one of my favorites, Patman. It was a weird game, but it was fun to play!
It sure was
I absolutely love the channel! Always funny and informative. Would you be able to do a part two of this video and talk about canon dancer? I believe it’s made by the same developer/creator of the Stryder arcade
Looking forward to watching this one.
I loved Strider as a kid but never made it that far in the game.
It definitely takes practice
The megadrive/genesis conversion was mind blowing at the time
Awesome video! Very thorough and informative!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have very fond memories of this game. I remember being mesmerized by the graphics. Galaxy force 2 was another one. It always made me think that a perfect home port could never be achieved outside of the arcades. They should re-make strider by making use of Nvidia real-time raytracing...LOL!!
He's one of my favorite in marvel vs capcom
Nice! One of my VERY favorite games ever!
Enjoy
thank you this is from the glory days of capcom that generation was awesome
No doubt!
My favorites of these are Strider II on the PS1 and Strider on the NES because they focus more on good gameplay. The original arcade game and its Mega Drive port had a lot of graphical pizazz but the gameplay was all over the place and I felt like I had little control over anything.
I loved playing strider returns on my game gear as a kid
I had the super grafx version but now ive got the Arcade 1up still fantastic ❤
This and Shinobi always overshadowed by Ninja Gaiden, all are amazing games. Especially the arcade version of this
Played this on Mega Drive/Genesis back in the day, loved it!
Same here!
The NES one has the best soundtrack. It was the first Strider game I ever played.
Always wondered what a Super Nintendo port would’ve been like. Super nes had a lot of great capcom games back in the day.
I would be curious about the slowdown on the system
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I think they would do an awesome job I only say that because so many ports from capcom where very good. Plus the FX1 or 2 chips could mitigate the slowdown. Street fighter alpha 2 was a good port so strider is a peace of cake.
Boom. He’s back.
Thanks
One of my favorite games. Great video as always! I was hoping you would have included Cannon Dancer/Osman an unofficial Strider like sequel made by the same developer of the original Strider.
It wasn't an official game, plus the video was already running close to 40 minutes Thanks
One of the first games I got for my mega drive. I especially liked the voice sample where the villain screamed 'all sons of old gods die!' This was the Japanese version. On later picked up the western release and found it was missing
I didn't realize it was in the Japanese version, I knew it was missing from the US release. Thanks for the info
One of my favs too Patman awesome work.
Thank you
I haven't been this early since PatMan still had hands
LOL comment of the day
I think I had to pay $70 for the Genesis version when it released. I was broke that week...but happy.
I didn't buy it when it first came out so I had no idea itt was so expensive
Ahh man I remember picking up Strider for the genesis waaay back in the day. I still play this game 👍🏽
The ost is 🔥
Absolutely
Strider "Next-Gen" is also available on Xbox 360 & Xbox One. The latter is playable on Xbox Series S|X via backwards-compatibility.
Thanks for the info
Strider is like mixing SF II and Mega Man together in one game graphically wise.
Yes, but a bit more action ;-)
Great channel, I'm hooked
Welcome aboard! Thank you so much
One of the first games i got for my Atati ST and i loved it back then. I never played it in the arcade so didnt have anything to compare it too.
It was pretty good on the ST
If you have Strider 2 digital on PS3/PSN, you can "virtually" flip the "disk" and play the arcade Strider. Start Strider 2, hold the PS button, (note the Switch Disk: disc 2 option is disabled) select Reset Game, select Start Disc 1...play Strider arcade version!
Excellent, thanks for the info
I turned 40 in 2020 and let me tell you...I've seen ONE Strider cabinet in my entire life. Pretty sure it was a conversion like most Capcom games were...
I think most of us remember Strider as a home game with the Genesis, Amiga and PC versions....and of course the NES version that was totally different.
Yes, totally different game
LOVED this in the arcade! Never played any of the ports or sequels.
It's a classic
