  • On our episode this week, we meet a big time farmer. Jay is a farmer growing grain as well as raising dairy & beef cattle & lambs. The lamb part of the farm is what we are going to talk to him about today, as they feed 30 thousand lambs each year. With that many animals, you've got to have a good team - which is one of the things Jay talks about. We also get to watch a lamb shearing as Jay explains why he does it.
We mention Carrie Woolley's sheep in this video. If you missed that farm tour, you can see it here: • Meet Sheep Farmer Carr...
If you'd like to see another sheep farm, you can always visit: www.farmfood360.ca/#sheep-tile
DINNER STARTS HERE 52 Farms in 52 Weeks!

Shearing a lamb will stimulate growth in a lamb in outside living.

Is the guy who is the host of the show Canadian? He sounds like someone from the midwest US. The farmer sounds more generic American until he said " aboot".

I consider a lamb a (ewe) breeding female at about a year she should be bred at 7 or 8 months and then have her first lamb in 5 months after breeding

hooved animals eg,sheep, goat, beef are aged and graded according to there teeth.just like humans these animals have two sets of teeth,an animal that is classified a lamb will still have milk teeth. As the animal reached around 12 to 15 months depending on breed, it cuts teeth,(meaning it looses its milk teeth, and replaces it with permanent teeth which are bigger then the initial milk teeth.if the animal is mouthed and show 2 big teeth(I call them rabbit teeth)it means that the animal is no longer a Lamb, and it moves over 2 CLASS AB.lambs are A CLASS.So from 2 big teeth to 4 big teeth,it will be classed as B CLASS,which happens around 24 to 36 months of age.If you not looking for too tender meat, and needing more flavour in your meat,I would suggest AB CLASS.The chops are also alot bigger and tasty.
