- For a long time, we assumed that African Bush Elephants and African Forest Elephants were the same species but just looked different because of their environment. But actually, they are completely different species!

Infact I think Palaeoloxdon was closer to the Forest elephant than the forest elephant is to the bush elephant
then why are the forest and bush elephants in the same genus (loxodonta)? the forest elephant should be in the palaeoloxodon genus. no?
@@beastinfection638 could possibly be from hybridization? Pretty sure palaeoloxodon was genetically closed to loxodonta, so maybe the ancestors between the two interbred which would result in the Forest elephant being genetically closer to Palaeoloxodon despite being in a completely different genus. Or maybe it could’ve been a case of hybrid speciation, where two distinct species interbreed and eventually that hybrid becomes a new species
@@HogBurgerboth mammoths and African forest elephants ( western population) involved in the palaeoloxodons hybridization
There are also exthinct Northern African Elephants, used as war elephants by the Cartheginians, drove to extinction by the Romans.
Those are a subspecies not a species.
As well as the african desert elephan
And Asian elephants are closer to Mammoths than their modern African cousins
