  • Let's talk about the 1844 Farthing, a coin that occupies a special place in numismatic history as the rarest year Farthing coin. You don't have to hunt for variations, errors, or nuances; just knowing the year is enough. Considered a key date coin, its rarity stems from its low mintage. For new collectors, Farthings in general are excellent starting points coins due to their accessibility in lower grades and comparatively lower costs for a nearly 200 year old coin. They offer a captivating entry into coin collecting, allowing exploration of different versions and uncovering potential rarities. So, knowing just the years is all you need as a new collector. Despite that, only 430,000 were minted, making it the lowest minted among all Victorian Farthings and also the highest value farthing for collectors. The 1850 version has only 80 more at 430,080 but holds significantly Lower value. Does anyone know why?
On the reverse side, you’ll find a seated Britannia depicted to the right, wearing a helmet. She holds a trident in her left hand and a shield adorned with the Union flag in her right hand. Encircling her is a legend, and below her, in the exergue, are the national flowers of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The inscription "BRITANNIAR: REG: FID: DEF:" is short for "Britanniarum Regina Fidei Defensatrix," translating to "Queen of the Britains Defender of the Faith."
The obverse features an uncrowned portrait known as the 'Young Head' of Queen Victoria facing left, surrounded by a legend. Below the portrait, you'll find the date, with the initials W.W. (signifying the engraver William Wyon) located on the bust truncation. The legend reads "VICTORIA DEI GRATIA," which translates to "Victoria by the Grace of God."
Here are some facts and figures
Mintage: 430,000 coins minted at Tower Hill, London
This was the lowest mintage and there for a Key date.
    Composition: Copper
    Weight: 4.72 grams
    Diameter: 22 millimeters
    Thickness: 1.6 millimeters
Each coin represented 1/960 of a Pound Sterling in the pre-decimal system, so 960 of these coins made up an old pound.
Fun Fact: Stacked together, these coins would reach a height of 1.5 meters and weigh approximately 4.5 kilograms!
    Varieties and Errors
While this coin doesn’t exhibit any errors, there are a couple of varieties to note. Look for instances like a doubled "E" or E over E in DEI on the obverse, with and without a colon at the end of DEF. These variations don’t affect the value; it's more about the thrill of finding one.
