I heat the nock in hot water. If it is too loose press it tighter, too tight open the throat a little. Changing the serving thickness is fine if all your necks are identical. In my experience they are not. If you measure a container of necks, there will be a variation, small but measurable. Also the necks will widen due to use. It is easier to change the nock throat than the serving diameter. This advice Comes from Olympic archers.

Same mate, 1000's of shots I've done with beiter pin nocks, I adjust the nocks to fit the string. When I get a new string I buy a set of new nocks (benefit of pin nocks) and adjust them.

I used cloth hockey stick tape to add more serving to my bow string. Seems to work fine.

When I order arrows, it has no number for the nock size. Why isn't the thickness of the serving a standard width? New string and I've never dealt with setting up the serving before. My wife's string just works with standard nocks. It's like someone wants to make this into an exercise in chasing down phantoms that mess up the performance.

The reason for different serving size is that some bowstring material is thicker than others and some bowstring builders use more strands than others. We test our bowstrings to fit the standard nock:) But sometimes people have smaller or larger nocks.

And this is why I use an experienced string builder who will build to my specifications including the branded nocks I use rather than build myself.

Rather than use loose nocks that have a risk to the bow, like limbs becoming delaminated or breaking, it is better to use a little tight nock.

Brginner here. I recently bought a cheap 20lb takedown recurve bow with all the necessary equipment to start doing some target practice with my kids. During our first session we were having trouble keeping the nock on the string because it was way too loose. I was thinking of just wrapping a little bit of duct tape around the string at the nock point. I know it's not the proper way but it seems like it would be a quick easy fix for us. Any reason why we shouldn't do this?
