For common bengalis nothing changed with the change of power from turkis to british, both were oppressive.. Only thing is british especially post EIC brought in some semblance of order and transparency while appointing later tax collectors by introducing open auction .... Called zamindari(permanent settlement), which ended the oppresive mughals foisting turkis , persians and afghans as rulers(tax collectors) of bengal .Zamindari was called opressive especially by Muslims in bengal giving it a clear religious slant quite mischieviously by muslim league conveniently forgetting the rule of nawabs which was no less oppressive.
Mir qasim moved his capital to monghyr in todays bihar but to pay idemnity amount to british he unleashed a rein of terror . This gentleman is not saying that another oppressive tyrant is being projected as another hero of bengal. No doubt he was more effective in collecting taxes albeit through oppression he aligned with the nawab of lucknow and also stabbing him in the back during the battle of buxar. Please note shah alam was the third one who had aligned with these two, but had an underhand deal with british to beat his own alliance in buxar and retain his mughal padshah status albeit on a pension.
