A great reaction and very thoughtful interpretation. In Ukrainian culture, particularly in embroidery, red color symbolizes love and black -sorrow. There is a very popular song literarily stating these meanings in the chorus.

    Greetings from Ukraine.
I love your review, research and theory (it is 99% correct, btw), thank you :)
This song very hard to translate to other languages because of very old (folk) manner of composing the words. Anyway - here's the few couplets and first chorus (as a gift to you):
    [UKR 1]
    Ой ходила я в долину
    По червоную калину,
    Ой ходила я в долину
    По червоную калину.
    [ENG 1]
    I went to the valley
    for the red viburnum.
    I went to the valley
    for the red viburnum.
    [UKR 2]
    Назбирала квіточок,
    Заплітала в віночок.
    Заплітала в віночок
    Руту і барвіночок
    [ENG 2]
I have picked up some flowers as well
    For a wreath.
I have weaved a ruth and periwinkle in it.
    [UKR 3]
А до мене Ванюша із-за гаю поспішав
А до мене Ванюша - "Ти Катруся хороша"
    - "Мила моя Катруся, я з тобою люблюся"
    - Я з тобою люблюся поки не зна матуся.
    [ENG 3]
    Vaniusha was rushing to me
across the grove (in a meantime).
    - "Katrusia, my darling, I'm in love with you."
    - I love you too, but I'm affraid
we'll neve see each other again once my mother find out about us.
    [UKR 4]
    Соловей, соловей, не співай раненько
Бо мені на серденьку знов не веселенько.
Соловей, соловей, ой як мені бути?
Вміла його полюбити, не вміла забути.
    [ENG 4]
Nightingale, nightingale, please don't sing so early.
    My heart is breaking.
Nightingale, nightingale, how should I be?
I have felt in love with him,
And wouldn't be able to stop.

That is little more info for your very good interpretation. Nightingale (Соловей) is a night bird. He sings very sweetly all summer night. Nightingale is a witness of love in our folklore. Generally a song about first love. Colors black and red are the main colors of our embroidery from the region from which the song performer. Red - is love. Black - a mourning. The military has other interpretations. Red- is blood. Black - is the land they defend.

  • @ChristineK333
    @ChristineK333 Před 4 lety +8

You did such a meticulous job of finding the lyrics, translating them and interpreting them! That’s so thoughtful.
On the side note, the blackhawk isn’t mentioned in the lyrics. It’s the boy who says he really likes her and wants to keep seeing her as long as his mom doesn’t find out. (Hinting that he’s not serious about her). She has already “broken the guelder rose” with him (guelder rose symbolizes virginity in Ukrainian folklore). But to keep her face, she says she’s on the same page with him and they can keep dating in secret.
Since she probably can’t share it with anybody else, she confesses to the nightingale that she actually has fallen in love and can’t get over him/move on.
    ♥️♥️♥️

Thanks for your lovely comment. I just kept reading the world "blackhaw" and it didn't really make sense to me, so I assumed it means blackhawk. But still, thanks for telling me! :]

    • @m.o.5017
      @m.o.5017 Před 4 lety +4

@@RanESC Blackhaw (without the k) is a type of plant, a subtype of the viburnum. She sings that she went down into the valley to harvest "chervona kalyna", which literally means "red viburnum", but that's a clunky translation, so the more elegant one would be "to harvest red guelder rose", even through what is actually meant are the berries of the guelder rose, since the flowers are actually white. The point here is, there are several translations floating around because "red viburnum" sounds so clunky. "To harvest blackhaw" is just another possible translation. The plant is called kalyna in Ukrainian and is a national symbol. It stands symbolically for a young girl/maiden. In the second verse, the the song says "I wouldn't have broken the guelder rose", which symbolically stands for her losing her viginity.
She addresses the nightingale because she cannot talk to anyone else about her d'alliance because it is a symbol of love but also of lover's parting (the nightingale sings early in the morning, which is when secret lovers would have to part for the day). She asks the nightingale to not sing yet so she can spend more time with Ivan. The nightingale is also a symbol of free will in Ukrainian folklore, making the song a bit more spunky, as the girl is demonstrating her own will in meeting with her lover even though she knows her mother (it's not quite clear whose mother is meant to not know about the affair, but it's most likely her mother, not his) will not be happy about it.
Basically, the song is packed full of symbolic elements and phrases that are difficult to read if one doesn't know Ukrainian/Slavic folklore. While this song was written by the band, it's written in the style of traditional Slavic love songs. Non-Slavs often are perplexed by how Slavic love songs are rarely happy songs, but usually either sad or melancholic.
You did a great job with your research and interpretation! I really love that kind of reaction channel!
