Hey! Guess what. You're Awesome and thanks for watching. I promise this is the best DND tutorial based on a 30 year old Jeff Foxworthy joke you'll ever see. Stick around for more and vote in the comments for which subclass you'd like to next.
The Arcane Trickster is one of the funnest classes in the PHB and I am glad it won the poll. Love me my martials but love that spellsword archetype maybe just a little more. Great versatility and some incredible options make this just an all around blast to play.

I played a D&D campaign with husband-and-wife team. The wife was deaf but both of them knew how to use sign language and they both played as Rogues so the DM for that campaign made sign language thieves can't.

One thing to note: at 3rd level, ONE of the initial spells ATs get can be from any school. The one in my current party used this to pick up Find Familiar and has his hawk give him Help on his first attack each round so he can ensure at least one sneak attack with advantage.

I'd definitely mention taking Find Familiar as one of your spells at 3rd level, specifically the Owl as its Flyby trait will provide you with a relatively consistent means of advantage. Also, I'd grab Booming Blade and Minor Illusion for some of your cantrips; Booming Blade not only increases the damage out put of your singular attack but also encourages a hit-and-run melee playstyle a lot of melee rogues love, and you can literally make your own place to hide with something like Minor Illusion.

There are so many good 3rd level spells to choose... Haste, Flame Arrows, Haste, Fly, Haste, Vampiric Touch... but really, pick Haste. Use the Haste attack to Sneak Attack on your turn, and ready an action to make *another* sneak attack when your familiar does a fly by help on its turn, which will give you advantage. Haste literally doubles your damage.

I like to reflavor this class and subclass as a sorta magic tech spy. The spells themselves are like gadgets that the rogue can pick out and use. May not make sense due to the nature of spell slots buuuut the fun part there is to just say that you had that gadget all along. And then walk off the screen with some sick ass shades on. 😎

Here's the Homebrew I use for Arcane trickster if anyone wanted a gander.
    Conclusion.
    Spellcasting.
They can choose any wizard spell according to level instead of just enchantment and illusion.
3rd level, you summon an invisible mage hand that can be controlled with a bonus action, this hand has more uses too.
If you did not choose Mage hand as a cantrip then this feature is replaced with.
3rd level, Damaging cantrips can now proc sneak attack, this does not add to the amount of sneak attacks possible in a turn remaining at one.
Starting at 9th level, if you are hidden from a creature when you cast a spell on it, the creature has disadvantage on any saving throw it makes against the spell this turn.
Starting at 13th level, you can summon a mage hand next the enemy to distract them, giving you avantage against this target for one round. this feature costs a bonus action to spawn a Mage hand, however the hand only lasts one turn.
Starting at 17th level, you can negate and steal the spell of an enemy spellcaster as a reaction. The dc is now a sleight of hand check against their spell save Dc, you negate the spells effect upon you and the party and you get one free cast of it. This can be used once every long rest.

What I really want to do is to make an arcane trickster 3/enchantment wizard 2/ whatever.
Then with the enchantment wizard basically hypnotize them into just standing there, and rob them blind over the course of multiple turns as a bonus action each round, then run away.
Or put their pockets full of oil, run away, then let the mage hand strike a match, sure, it only does 5 fire raw, however the dm might rule otherwise if you spend a minute soaking the mages robes in oil. Its not even that strong as you need to stand there uninterrupted, so any minion could break it, but man would it be cool to get spotted, look the evil mage right in the eyes for a long staring contest, in the meanwhile oiling them up, then walk away as they melt behind you.

    Character build, The Daily Chronicle
The perfect Arcane Trickster build for the less than roguish types. A chronicaller and keeper of knowledge purposed with recording as much of the world as they can. Mechanically awkward but incredibly intelligent and competent. Knowledge boat, not a typical skill boat.
    Dex primary. 18-20
    Int Secondary. 16-20
    Wis and Cha Tertiary. 14+
    (Languages 4*/Skills 10/Tools 3)
    Autognome (2/0/2)
    Sage (2/2/0)
    Warlock 6 - Lorehold (0/2/0)
    Wizard 2 - Lore Mastery (0/2/0)
    Rogue 12 - Arcane Trickster (0*/4/1)
Languages - Common, Elven, Dwarven, Gnomish, *Theives Cant
    Tools - Calligraphers, Painters, Theives
Skills, all ten with expertise - History, Arcana, Religion, Nature, Medicine, Investigation, Insight, Perception, Stealth, Sleight of Hand
Avoids Cha skills to maintian the awkward automaton idea despite decent Cha. Also prevents them from being the face of the party. Animal Handling and Survival are deemed not useful to the autognome. Atheletics and Acrobatics require effort and time better spent seeking or sharing knowledge.
***Unparalleled Int based skill checks via Lore Mastery/Expertise, Ancient Companion/Advantage(Sage), Reliable Talent/Take 10, Lessons of the Past/+2(Sage), and Built For Success/+1d4. Spells selected later may assist as well such as Guidance. Backed up with the Sage background Research feature, if they don't know it they can find who does. Expertise in Perception combined with the Observant and Keen Mind feats means they catch every detail of everything they see***
A decent fistful of spell slots and ritual casting provide ample utility and flexibility to the character.
Long rests are 6 hours(Sentry's Rest) and lightly active(Aspect of the Moon). Short rests renew the summoning of an Ancient Companion, Warlock spell slots, a single Wizard slot, and the single use of Spell Secrets' changed saving throw.
Preferred tactic is to hide and use the bonus from Magical Ambush with powerful scrolls and wands. Thus they will horde offensive scrolls and spell casting items.
Most actions will be Eldritch Blast with the benefits of Agonizing Blast, Eldritch Spear, Spell Sniper and an Arcane Focus unless an easy Sneak Attack opportunity is present as the additional damage is not immense, staying away is safer.
Most Sneak Attacks will instead be acheived by the defensive Attacks of Opportunity provided by War Caster to use a blade type cantrip and Blade Mastery for big damage and the guaranteed advantage.
Will seek sagelike robes(defense and more spells), a classically powerful staff(arcane focus and more spells), and vision enhancing devices(seeing more is essential) for attunable items.
    Feats
    Spell Sniper
    War Caster
    Blade Master
    Keen Mind
    Observant(bonus)
    Spell Slots (7/3/3)
    Rogue 4/3
    Warlock 0/0/3
    Wizard 3 +Ritual Casting
    Cantrips
Rogue 3+1 (+Mage Hand, Friends, Light, Prestidigitation)
Warlock 3 (Booming Blade, Green Flame Blade, Minor Illusion)
Wizard 3 (Encode Thoughts, Mending, Message)
Pact of the Tome 3 (Guidance, Vicious Mockery, Spare The Dying)
    Spell Sniper (Chill Touch)
Arcane Trickster and Wizard both use Wizard spell selections.
0 of 18 Wizard Spell starting selections
0 of 7 Warlock Spell selections

Reasons, in my opinion, spell thief sucks despite being really cool:
    1) Most creatures the DM uses have spell-like abilities, not spells, thanks to all the new books.
    2) If a spellcasting creature has legendary resistance, it can choose to just pass the save against your spell thief affect and you can't use it again (it's once per long rest)
    3) You don't even get 4th level spells until 19th level arcane trickster. Most enemies will be casting 6th level spells or higher on your party due to the potency of these spells. Although this is a decent feature against lower level creatures, honestly unless you're stealing the fireball spell you really will not be seeing spells of 4th level or lower.
    Reasons why it's decent:
    1) If, by some miracle, the creature does fail the save, you basically are immune to the spell and remove the enemy's access to the spell.
Reason why that doesn't fully matter: Just take counterspell at that point. If you really want to be good at counterspell, go abjuration wizard, or take counterspell on bard and add jack of all trades to the roll. Either way, you are generally better off with counterspell because Spell Thief literally only makes the user immune to it once/long rest on a failed save. On a successful save, the creature keeps the spell, the effect goes through normally, and the rogue can't use that feature anymore.
