  • "Hommage to the Ladies". Again sporting an imposing processional introduction, this waltz dates from the early days of Emile Waldteufel’s international fame. Along with Les Sirènes, it was introduced to London at a State Ball at Buckingham Palace on 22 May 1878. By offering the composer’s portrait on the original piano edition, the London publishers offered his admirers a chance to see what their new idol looked like. The Waltz was dedicated to Madame de Girardin-presumably the estranged second wife of Emile de Girardin (1806-81), founder of La Presse.

Regarding Waldteufel's available output, I wish there was a full orchestral recording of his Op. 259 waltz: "Bleuets et coquelicots".

There is a marvelous piano performance, and a sweet sounding old chamber recording available. But I don't know why there's no full orchestral recording, as it is an excellent waltz!

@@christianblack9426 Perhaps the orchestral parts(are hidden in an archive some where in Europe) or did not servive the second world war. From the piano score a good orchestration can be done, but recording companies are rearly interested, sad. Please let me know the CD # of the piano recording.Thanks.

Very good waltz by the French Strauss. I have been listening to Waldteufel's pieces for many years and I have listened to practically all available recordings of his works but somehow I have never seen a photograph/portrait of him at a young age. Do you have one by any chance? (like this one you mentioned in the description).

@@ziehrereien478 Yes, this is possibly his most popular portrait, showing him at middle age. I meant more about what he looked like around at the age of 30-40 (like in 1878 when his Hommage aux Dames had it's premiere).
