This is one of my favorite episodes we did so far! Amoebas are fascinating to watch, and when they are infected with something it just makes them even more interesting! Thank you for watching and extra thank you to all the new patrons we got recently with our first Patreon goal announcement, we are so close to reaching our goal and getting me a new microscope objective for 400x magnification! Super excited!

We love you James
It's always good to hear from you! Thanks for inspiring me to be patient and pay attention to the little things in life.
"Intelligence is not the absence of mistakes" is such a good line :)
Oh I love that. What is intelligence then???
@@sarah3796 It is a human construct, there is no measure of intelligence, it is impossible as it is subjective. Someone might be good at calculations but bad at social intelligence and not wise. Someone very wise and knowledgeable might be illeterate, learning from life and communications with others. Someone with high IQ might be very "dumb" when applying their knowledge to real life etc.
Impossible to measure.
@@sarah3796 some argue that it is efficiency in certain decision-making tasks. But the lines might be blurry, and others believe that the capacity to learn and adapt actively is a defining factor for intelligence. But in my opinion the qualities and strengths of a brain can hardly be summarised in a single IQ score

This is absolutely the most soothing video about a fungal infection ever made.

you probably dont care at all but does any of you know of a method to get back into an instagram account..?
I somehow lost my account password. I love any help you can offer me.
@Chase Leonel instablaster :)
@Lyric Anakin I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and Im in the hacking process atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Lyric Anakin It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my ass :D
That quote from Joseph Leidy is incredible.
He sounds like a very humble person.
@@Ziffer777 . . . and quite the leidy's man too =P
Very self-critical, self-aware, and willing to be proven wrong. He sees himself as a part of an ongoing process carried out by a community. He is the best of Science.

*This takes me back to the days where a group of protists and I went to see the Vorax. A children's story about saving the microcosmos from habitat destruction by their corporate overlords. Let me tell you, it was one of the most moving microbial films I've seen on the big membrane. Well, except for the Vorax of course, he didn't move at all.*
I will put anti bacteria on u
Nothing like seeing the original on a proper membrane 👍
@@purpledudeanimates9030 Rotifers aren't bacteria
@@ArawnOfAnnwn Yes I'm aware, but anti bacteria can also kill things other than bacteria, so I guess it could kill a rotifer
A lot of antibiotics disrupt the cell wall of bacteria and wouldn't work on a rotifer.
TIL: a humidity chamber is not fancy
it is possible to feel sorry for a microbe
I dunno about anyone else but that amoeba disintegrating and "laying the eggs" was a very alarming visual for me, made me think about zenomorphs and other such monsters! Nature, you scary!
Fabulous video as always, though!
Definitely quite horrifying to witness my stomach is turning....
Gosh, those little rhizomes dragging behind the little ones were really cute; then we got full body horror when the infection piled up in the big ones.
I’m sickened, but curious.
Something about cytoplasmic contents moving through an amoeba is just mesmerising to watch..
Indeed it is. Though flow have a resemblance of pale vomit.

I'm continually amazed by James' ability to find rare organisms, and provide such stunning microscopy. And kudos for referencing Leidy's "Freshwater Rhizopods", a rare volume indeed. Well worth a look if you can find it.
Those soft squishy Amoeba bodies are probably the perfect place for a fungi to reside

I just don't understand why these videos aren't more popular. Please hang in there.
50 to 100k viewers in the first week or two out of 450k subs is actually really good. Mostly channels get about 15% of their sub base with each video, this is more like 20%.

I don't know if it's intended but Journey to the Microcosmos episodes are so relaxing they're mildly therapeutic. Therapy + learning = awesomesauce every time
What an awesome, genuinely humble guy.
As always, shoutout to James, the master of microscopes.
I don't care if his name is Gus, he doesn't look all that fun to me.
Guy is pretty fun though.
What a gorgeous video!
Thanks for the fungus, it's always amazing. Fungus is in everything it seems. Weaving life together and apart.
Another fantastic video. I love the small snippets of history you give about the various scientists who first studied the critters you are talking about. Really fascinating, thank you
I wish more people would take to heart and honestly use this phrase "I am conscious of having been unable to avoid the usual proportion of errors, for which i beg indulgence, and which i leave for others who shall pursue the same path of investigation to correct".
Can be applied to so many things in life, apart from owning ones mistakes its a great mindset.
This has to be one of the best you've ever shared with us! Legit chills at the end, it was so good! 🥰
Always love it when you guys upload
Loving the new quality! I’ll be back for every upload
This videos are such an inspiration to me! I’m currently programming a fun project to simulate micro organisms and these videos are providing me so much to use!!!
I got ads for inflatable swimming pools on this video. Good try Google, but I don't think I can start a career in microbiology with an inflatable swimming pool
I'm getting Gibco instructional videos like clockwork, the least annoying ads I've come across so far.
I used to work with these guys when I was an undergrad. They are fascinating! Thanks for the video!
Nicely done - well written and good footage.
Mindbogglingly beautiful. Thank you!
I love that you give a bit of history with each organism
Ok am I the only one whose skin starts itching at the sight of parasites infecting microorganisms? No one? Ok

"The Alien" version of microscopic world! Also, RIP Amoeba.
Its very nice to see this but I cannot unsee the parallel to the current issues that harm us in the relatively macro world
I have just added to the end of my Ph.D. the quote from Joseph Leid. Thanks for sharing.

Watching this after failing my biology midterm to hype myself back up
Fungi are really one of the most inconvenient beings in the world, but at the same time they are extremely necessary!
I would love to hear more of Hank's voice reading from 19th century texts -- non fiction, fiction, anything really.
Always had an interest in the micocosmos especially the parasitic life, so curious to see the different creatures your lens picks up.
At 7:16 the creature could be the cousin of the great creature from in the film Life.
It's amazing what goes on in this tiny tiny world
Yall are a bunch of fun guys. 🤓
I love that phrase about the errors, it's polite and smart and sounds so beautiful!
The name of sum 41 album lol. Love your videos man :)
“Good Call, Man!” Yeah! That should be one of the most famous and most frequently quoted statements of all time. LOL... it would improve everything everywhere and let people quickly make errors and move forward with corrections happy to have errors in which to work from. Less ego more ergo therefore.
watching all the goo flowing through the amoeba as it stretches is so cool
czcams.com/video/QmBmgdN23Dc/video.html also really nice footage
7:21 "He's a Pirate" starts playing
A suggestion for a video occurred to me and while I doubt my comment will be noticed or acted upon, I thought that I'd give it a try.
There's been one thing that has always perplexed me: Whenever I see anything about the microcosmos, it seems as though it's just absolutely filled with organisms and bacteria etc. And it seems to me that these organisms are so very specialized to specific environments or events. For instance, an organism might only live on a particular type of tree, or another might live only in excrement. And since everything is so tiny and not so mobile... just how does it get to the environment or event at all... or in a timely manner. Is it just all over the place waiting for the right moment? I feel like I'm missing something here. Like if new tree begins very far away from any of its relatives, how would the bacteria know to get to it? Do they hitch a ride on the seed?
Their microcosmonauts in a sea of space and time flowing where the winds blow and the rains fall. Some speculate they are attracted by a pressure between environments that transports them to their final destination. 🤧
Such soothing voice. I wish I had this guy for my microbiology class. Oof-
I’d like to see more on these parasites/fungi that infect various unicellular organisms. I have no idea what’s actually going on here but these videos are awesome.
omg i want this track at the beginning
I'd love to learn more about how you keep the samples alive on the slide for so long. I believe it was mentioned you use some sort of chamber to keep them from evaporating?
Nice
So peaceful! Except when it’s not!
I didn't realise that you were the Hank Green from SciShow and even though the voice seemed familiar, the personality behind that voice
Kinda scary to watch, but also soothing - weird
I love James
What do you do with the samples when you're done with them? Do you ever return them to the pond where they came from? Especially in a case like this I'm curious
My mycology prof would love this video
Joseph:"Yo! just found this wierd looking guy... not sure what it is but here what i think it is... shoutout to anyone who can help me with this shit"

I watch this through, and I think to myself? Why am I crying about this dead amoeba? Why does Hank sound like he's crying about this dead amoeba?
